I've been patronizing this store for nearly 11 years. For most of those years, when I went in - no matter how busy things were - my first thought was usually, "Gosh, they sure are overstaffed." Which was great for the customers! Since the recent changes in ownership, management, and staffing, my experience is nearly always, "Wow, they sure are understaffed." Tonight I went in and there was literally one employee on the floor, and she could not handle even the small number of customers in the store at 6:30. What I wanted to purchase was locked up, and when I realized I would have to wait at least 10 minutes to get any help, I left. I likely won't be back unless I've got some emergency. This store used to be one of the best things about living in St. Johns. Now I doubt it'll survive much longer, and this iteration will not be missed. Great job, new owners. read more

All of my shopping experiences here have been great... friendly and knowledgeable employees, rarely a line at the checkout, private parking lot, usually a decent selection/options of products. I purchased an item and when it was rung up it was more than a dollar over the price on the shelf label. When I questioned it, they made me go back and check the upc. It was Different but that was the only tag and price shown. I brought the price label to the checker and she said she couldn't refund the overpayment amount because they must have had a price change and forgot to update the ticket. She didn't call anyone to check on that and just told me no she could not give me the price listed on the shelf. I probably won't go there again. read more

Bought a lot of stuff here but I was nearly attacked by an unmuzzled pit bull this week--lunging and barking wildly-- and it will be a long while before I step back in this store. Dogs, especially aggressive big breeds, should be muzzled and that should be clear store policy, since it's not something that seems to occur to some dog owners. Shout out for BOB!! I have been avoiding fixing a leaky hot water faucet in my bathroom because it seemed daunting. Today I took the faucet stem into our neighborhood Ace, and Bob helped figure out what was needed as well as suggested a better fix that solved the drip (more like a stream) of hot water down the drain. I have been to Home Depot and Lowes needing paint for touch ups and other home repairs. All have failed. Being near to St John I thought I would try Ace hardware. An assistant named Monica is the best in the area. She has to the te come up with the exact paint color to match the color of my inside room. I was amazed. Not only was Monica's ability to help with my paint issue, the manager was extremely helpful to supply my needs by showing me how to use different products. I have found Ace hardware in St. JOHN to be the best in the area along with their staff. I highly recommend this store. read more

I was looking for a 2.5lb propane tank. Why? Because I love adorably small things, because a 20lb propane tank is a little too Hank Hill for my weekend cookout, because I also want to hook this up to my propane blow torch for absolutely necessary and mostly if not completely safe gardening activities. Really, pick any reason or all those reasons. Other retailers had a wait and I would not and could not wait to see this tiny propane dream FILLED TO MY WILDEST DREAMS. Parking: I've never been here before and your parking lot has some of the tiniest little compact spots I've seen. That being said, my compact car fit. There's plenty of parking. Service: I ordered and paid online so we just popped in to pick up from the service desk. The staff was all masked up and behind plexiglass and the transaction was really smooth. I asked for my new 2.5lb tank to be filled (only $3.29) and, despite the line being understandably long on a busy Thursday afternoon, the staff was quick and friendly. read more

I bought a water pump that was Ace brand and came with a year warranty about 6 months ago, it failed. So called Ace Corp. and inquired how I get the warranty replacement and was informed just to exchange it at the store I purchased it from. So I gather receipt an pump and go to the local store I always shop at and where i purchase this pump. The clerk asked if I had other shopping, and I said yes, the clerk told me to just leave it there with him. So I round up the things I needed and grabbed a replacement pump, I set my items on the counter, and the clerk rings me up for my items and the pump I picked up for replacement. I said to him this pump is a warranty replacement and he calls the asst manager, he informs me he can't take it back. I said why? He tells me the owner won't take back pumps. I asked well why not it says year warranty on the box, and corporate said to bring it here for exchange. The asst manager said he doesn't know why and can't take it back. I asked if he could call his higher up, and he says, "Oh no, no, I can't call the owner, and he went home at 4. I said, "Is there a number or option where I can get this pump replaced under said warranty, and he informed me he had no idea. I said well you should put a big sign up that you won't honor the Ace brand warranties stated with there product. Maybe even stop stocking the brand altogether if the store isn't going to back up the product with its written warranty. I believe this is consumer fraud if I'm not mistaken neededless to say, but I will be taking the 1000s of dollars I spend here to Home Depot as I am disappointed that such a situation happened here. I understand returning items aimlessly from customers who fraud things are a problem, but this was a simple warranty exchange that the owner would have been reimbursed for. read more

St. John's Ace hardware store is my go-to hardware store. The staff is helpful and friendly every time I go in and they carry just about everything that I need. Recently, I had a sink plumbing issue that needed to be fixed right away. The store manager, Chris, took the time (30 mins) to trouble shoot the problem and explain how everything would work. He was very polite and friendly. I can now use my kitchen sink again, AND I do not have anymore problems with the plumbing setup. Thank you! read more

In this time of Covid-19, I want to say they were great at quickly and efficiently providing no contact curbside delivery into my car. I was able to order online and get a pickup right away. When I had a question I got my phone call answered promptly. And everyone was very cheerful and careful with masks and not touching my car doors. I did try to find mulch at local stores and had to give up. Then I tried Lowe's and never even got my call answered. Randomly, I heard something about Ace offering curbside pickup and it was sooo easy. I care for my 4 month grandson so I am super caution about having any interactions outside of my small family group of 3. I would shop here again even though it isn't quite as close! This place is a huge asset to the neighborhood. Has a neighborhood community vibe. I can not imagine having to drive to Home Depot or having to roll the dice at Fred Meyer's to see if they even have what I need. Plenty of knowledgeable staff, like shopping Nordstrom's. All over the place making sure you are taken care of. Recently got a very nice tape measure with a huge discount over 50% off by getting ace rewards. On another recent trip got a light switch just so glad they sent me home with the exact right one and got the project done in a nano second. BEST experiences in this store. A staff of solid problem solvers! Orlando saved me $350 after Batteries Plus told me my car key fob needed to be replaced, not a new battery. So I stop in ACE looking for a small flashlight since now I'm going to have to use actual key... I ask Orlando for a flashlight, he says sure but your key just needs a battery; which is exactly what it needed. Works great! Problem solved. I have been coming to St Johns Ace since it has opened its doors. I cannot believe how much this store has declined . I went in looking for a lamp cord ( making a lamp for a birthday gift ) and was met by the GM " Asa". They did not have what I was looking for so Asa went to their web site and said he could order one and it would take a day to get in. Not an issue since I had three days to finish the lamp for a gift. I paid for the order as As a requested and he said he would order it . Two days later I went in and asked for my order. The assistant manager got involved and looked everywhere but couldn't find the order. He then looked further and could not find d the order that was Supposed to have been placed. After finding the order was not placed and my timeline wouldn't work I said lets order it and I will be back in a week to pick it up. A week later I returned to get the electrical cord and was not even the right design. As I said before , I have been coming to this store since it opened and when I have questions generally Bob or Randy guide me through my task. I found out "Bob" has been let go ...BAD MOVE! Asa did not even order the part that I paid for. Ace needs to do better ! I worked in the service industry and this is NOT GOOD SERVICE !! read more

Just moved near St. Johns and have been making multiple trips to Ace. My handy-woman recommended them, and I'm so appreciative. Employees are incredibly helpful and attentive. Billie spent over an hour with me helping me find everything on my very long list, and my inevitable returns were handled easily. I even got help tetrising everything into my car. Their costs are a little higher than Lowe's but the convenience and attentiveness of the staff make it worth it! They will be my go-to store from now on. read more

This is my neighborhood Ace and I have shopped there for years. I always have been satisfied with their service and products. However my last couple of visits have been pretty disappointing. I usually have some project that requires me to ask for a little help with and usually the staff is extremely helpful. On my last couple of visits I have had the displeasure of asking for help from Asa who is definitely not a people person. The first time I just thought he was having a bad day so I let it slide. Both times I was treated like I was irritating him and he was just plain rude. He even told me there was no difference between metal and wood drill bits like he just wanted me to go away. BTW there is a difference between wood and metal drill bits - Shocking. If you shop there don't bother asking Asa for help not unless you into being treated rudely. read more

Why father is this Ace Hardware different from all other Ace Hardwares? Well it feels like a real neighborhood hardware store. I recently found out that Ace Hardware is actually a cooperative, so each store has a lot of leeway on how it wants to be run and what it does and doesn't carry. For starts this Ace has a delicious popcorn machine. I will be the first to admit that I am a popcorn junkie so this holds a lot of sway for me. Next are the pets! The owner of this Ace Hardware has two golden retrievers that he brings in. They freely wander the store and love getting pet. Don't feed them popcorn though. The staff here is pretty knowledgeable and very nice. They were open during the major snow storm on 2017 and had plenty of shovels, ice melt, and sleds. This is my favorite hardware store! During this pandemic it was really the only store I have been going to. They are so helpful. They walk you down to area where you will find what you were looking for. Today, Bob helped me find what I needed and before I went there I had it in my head I 'd have to call a plumber. The owner of this store is rude! Don't' shop here! If you were to bring something in for a repair, and given a fixed price, then you came in to pick up your repair and were told it was 50% more, what would you do? You'd ask why. Well, I just witnessed a (former, I'm sure) customer ask why, the owner wasn't able to offer a logical explanation and proceeded to throw him out. Really? I'll take my dollars elsewhere from now on! I have had some really funky projects, needed help with solutions to old house issues, returned things, had paint matched... Staff is super helpful. Fun facts 1) Their houseplant section is awesome. I tried to pre-order and prepay for an item that was out of stock. They told me I didn't need to prepay and that the item would be in following Tuesday if not before. The assistant manager gave me his card with that information. I waited until the following Thursday. It wasn't in and they tried to tell me that it was China's problem even though they previously told me it was in stock at the warehouse. And they already had 6 on order. read more

The employees at Ace Hardware in St Johns must be well-paid. Without exception, every experience I've had in this store has been positive. So, it's apparent that the people who work there are taken-care-of. I don't know who the manager is, but I would say that he or she is doing a great job. They've hired intelligent, friendly and genuine people and held together a strong crew. I live closer to Lowe's and Home Depot, but as long as Ace is doing what they do so well, I'll make the drive. I totally agree with the other reviewers. This is just a great little store - very friendly and helpful staff, nice ambience. Here's the thing (read ALL of this): there are some things you can get at Home Depot that you can't get at Ace. I HATE going to Home Depot cause I hate driving, but sometimes I have to go there. But - once I was at Home Depot and I needed a certain size finishing nails, and I couldn't find them. I managed (with difficulty) to find a human being to help me, and he said, "We just don't have small stuff any more. Go to Ace Hardware - they have everything." So, DON'T ASSUME that because Ace is small, that it has a small selection. They squeeze A LOT of stuff in there. For instance, their paint selection is a fraction the size of Home Depot, but I can just about guarantee they have absolutely every color and every supply and every tool you will ever want. And they are willing to help you with small, low profit items. Plus, local business - try Ace first before you go to the box stores. read more

This Ace location used to have really great customer service. Not sure if there was a change recently, but I had a pretty bad experience. I had a key made, the guy that made it seemed distracted. Turns out the key didn't work, when I looked at it later the ridges matched up but the new key was the wrong size, too short. I went back the next day and an older lady with long hair was at the counter, I explained the situation. She looked at the key and said there was "no way we made this". Even though the copy key was marked with "ACE" right on it. I didn't have the receipt, since it was for work I had to turn in the receipt to my company. She left and came back, reluctantly said she would make another key but that I needed to bring the receipt next time. No "sorry for our mistake" or anything like that. Well there won't be a next time, as I don't appreciate being called a liar after having to take extra time and go out of my way so you can fix your mistake. read more

My virginal experience at my local Ace Hardware was aces! I'm going 5 stars, people! My young friend said he had been here with his mom, and they had popcorn and dogs. Yeah right, I thought. But they do! Walk in the door, and you smell popcorn. Within a minute, I found the dog wearing a manager's tag! Don't feed the popcorn to the dogs - that's a no-no! I needed a water key, and a little guidance. So I went to Help desk - which has a cute little name with a big sign above it. I inquired about houses built as early as mine and whether they all had indoor water shut-off valves. After much FB discourse beforehand, this guys confirmed that many houses didnt have inside valves unless they were later added. So I bought this handy tool for $8.99 to shut off the valve in front of my house that looks like no one has touched it since the 70s. Poor valve!
