I was also looking for some really unique bi-fold door hardware that Wink's did not have but they directed me to National Builders' Hardware right around the corner and they had them. Excellent service from the Customer Service desk regarding European cabinet hinges that I couldn't find for my Mother's house at any of the big box stores. The gentlemen who assisted us was quick to locate hinges that will work and had 60 of them in stock (so I can replace 32 and have 28 spares for when other cabinet doors need replacement hinges... older home). When you need hard to find hardware for an old house, Winks is the place. When you need hard-to-find lightbulbs for unique lamps, Winks is the place. Basically, whenever I can't find what I need at a hardware store closer to my house, I go to Winks! Since their clientele is mostly contractors, their weekday only hours may be challenging for some. I just plan accordingly. I used to walk around and try to find my item, but after many visits, I just walk straight to the information desk, pull a ticket and wait to be called upon. When it's my turn, I get full attention and the service person addresses every item on my list. I then go to the counter up front, pay, and I'm done. There is a small parking lot out front in a fenced in area. I've never had any challenges finding a parking spot. Just be careful of all the large contractor trucks which can some times make backing out a little challenging, especially for a SMART car driver! read more

Probably the worst customer experience I've had in Portland. If I was a middle-aged white woman with blonde hair I probably would've been treated much better with all the toxic masculinity brewing in Winks hardware. I had heard great things about winks. I needed screws for a bed frame and thought they be super helpful. Although it was the complete opposite. The store was empty with no customers but yet the guy who assisted me was tapping his foot as if I was waisting his time. There . He came to check out the bed frame and said okay these should work how many do you need and I was so confused still on top of his tone being extremely rushed. Again with no one else in the store maybe two other customers at this time with a full staff. No one said thank you the energy was very very awkward and threatening to be honest. Went there today based on a Yelp review from friend Andrew and can't believe I hadn't been there before as a Portlander born and raised (and an avid DIY'er). I've been looking for hard to find drawer pulls a specific width. With some trepidation I took a number and waited to be called. The gentleman who helped me went to the back, couldn't find any and instead of sending me on my way he went to the buyer and brought out a whole book of drawer pulls to choose from. Yeah - very great customer service. I could buy from the web but instead I look forward to purchasing from Winks (once I choose the pulls I want) to thank them for their help and for being a great Portland establishment. Not only an impressively organized and well-stocked hardware store, it is very clean, dust is not allowed to settle, and shelf displays are orderly and attractive. The decorative items and household goods array are carefully curated and easily accessible. The plant buyer is exceptional. From Alocasia 'Hilo Beauty', and Sansevieria 'Mikado' to Actiniopterus australus (aka the Eyelash Fern) every plant is carefully selected from the common to the rare. The staff are helpful without being intrusive. I love hardware stores and really enjoy hunting for what I need by myself. Fortunately for me, the miscellaneous plumbing supplies are all tagged with full information and the items are arrayed in a well thought out imminently sensible order. I'll have to admit, I worked at a famous hardware store in Houston; Bering's Hardware, which is very similar to Wink's in feel and attitude. That is one reason that I was so pleased to find Wink's within walking distance to our new apartment in Goose Hollow. read more

This is an old timey hardware store, with a deep selection of specialized items and a very knowledgeable staff. Very. If you know what you need by name, they know where in the labyrinth in back of the counter to find it. If you can describe it or draw it they know the name. If you describe the problem you are trying to solve, they can suggest the items to do it. Each employee carries a precision rule and caliper to measure the thing you are looking for, in their pocket protector! You can also bring an example and they can decode it to find more for you. I think most of the counter employees have worked there for over 20 years. That's a good thing for you. They are strong in every kind of industrial, commercial and homeowner fastener. If you are lucky they'll bring you into the back, up and down isles of shelves packed with items. Who would have known these all existed? When you come in, grab a number from the dispenser by the main counter in back. Busy times there may be a wait, but when you number is up (pay attention) you will get the best dedicated service in the world. read more

Today marks the first time I ever heard of or visited this hardware store. Twelve washers were needed but as a medical transporter in the first responder category I was grateful for the use of the business' bathroom. The lady said go to the rear of the store and turn left. After exiting the bathroom I looked down and aisle to look for the washers. Another lady in the back appeared and I asked if she could point me towards the washers. Unexpectedly the same female employee snapped my head off by repeating "what are you doing back here...you can't be here...it doesn't matter why you're back here...leave!" As a senior citizen I thought she might push me to the floor and kneel on my throat! Fortunately a male employee directed me to a service counter, sold me the washers at a reasonable price and I left. That said I'm not sure that I'll ever return again. read more

Even when there is a longer wait at the service counter (for back-of-house supplies), I still find it more efficient than searching on my own at a regular store. I went to Winks today for the first time because I needed a funky piece of hardware for a wheelchair. I took a number, which was called right away. Claus looked at what I needed, consulted a fellow employee, and brought me back to all the drawers. He found what he thought would be a suitable solution - turns out that the hardware was of an odd size, specific to the wheelchair manufacturer - but he walked me out to the car to check that it would work. Well, it wouldn't. So Claus went right back to the drawing board, recommending a simpler solution that worked great. I'd estimate that he spent about 20 minutes with me - and my grand charge for my purchase was a whopping $1.70, which I gladly paid. This is not your average neighborhood store, it's the place where, when your neighborhood store doesn't have what you're looking for, they send you. I was in need some somewhat niche items, and they had exactly what I needed at a respectable price. The girls running the check out counter were talkative and helpful, and there were plenty of other staffers around to help me find what I was looking for. What more can I say? Ever since we moved back from Chicago I have been missing Clark-Devon Hardware, and the Lowe's, Home Depots, Harbor Freight, and Ace's weren't cutting it. Winks have more obscure, well crafted, and needed tools than I have seen in all of PDX. They had multiple Ceramic/Rare Earth/metal magnets, huge selection of Japanese draw saws, quality woodworking/metalworking/leather working equipment. The employees all spoke the same language as you, they knew how to fix things and knew where the parts were. This is an old school, walk past the front desk, you don't ask them questions, take a number at the back counter, maybe wait a few minutes (maybe wait more), talk to one of their people at the back counter, type of hardware store. Know what you want? Fine, they'll get it for you. Need to trouble shoot a problem or figure something out, they'll walk you through it. If they pull you back into their shelving stacks of fasteners to figure stuff out, it's pretty awesome. Extremely knowledgeable staff, as friendly as a hardware store should be, just a good, old-fashioned hardware store. Oh and they have a ton of stuff, I mean everything you would need from a hardware store. Fasteners are pretty cheap since they're ordering in bulk. They seem to know just about everything but if they don't, they won't fake it. They'll search out the answer. Also, they don't shame my ignorance. This time I had an idea for a bathtub-to-shower-conversion that I think turned out to be a pretty good one, cheaper than the usual converter kit and better for my particular situation. After wandering all over town and the internet, I finally got the help I needed at Winks. (I hadn't thought of them as plumbing people before.... mostly go there for carpentry type stuff.) All I can say is wow! This hardware store has EVERYTHING! It's a huge store with an incredible inventory. The staff is very helpful. I was referred to them from a smaller hardware store when I was looking for an acorn nut made of brass from a horse harness. I thought for sure I'd need to order it from them. Instead I walked in with my old damaged nut, the lady with the pony tail (redish hair) took it back to one of the million drawers in this place and produced one right there on the spot.
