A chain that always manages to feel like a local, neighborhood hardware store, I'm a huge fan of True Value. While they are across the river from where I live, this location is still one of the closest to my house and I love the service they provide. As soon as you enter you are greeted and asked if you need help finding anything. Typically when I stop at a hardware store I am here for something specific so having an employee guide me to the exact location is super helpful! That being said, while here I always peruse the aisles. I'm always delighted by the seasonal items and the beautiful kitchen accessories like dish towels and cocktail napkins in fun seasonal motifs. They have delightful scented candles that I've picked up for myself and hostess gifts. And of course they have extension cords, cleaning products, picture hanging kits, light bulbs, Allen wrenches and other random stuff I need. I'd much rather shop at a small, local store than go to a big box place where you have to walk huge distances to find a simple item or two. Located right on Hawthorne, you may drive right by because the garden out front gives the impression that it's just one of the houses in the hood! So put the location in your GPS so you don't miss it. read more

Picture this: you walk into Home Depot in search of that one little thing you need for your project. You spend forever walking the rows searching the signs for the category that may or may not include your little thing. You think to yourself "ok, I think I need someone to help me. That will speed things up!" You then spend forever x2 looking for someone to ask, traipsing the very same aisles you slogged down before, but the only orange-aproned denizens you spy are rushing past you in a hurry. You finally find a stationary one but they are already helping another customer. You awkwardly hover around them in a nervous orbit before eventually giving up and going home. Now picture this: you walk into Hankins Hardware True Value and are immediately asked "Hi, can I help you find anything?". You are immediately brought to where your product is located, spend a few minutes looking at it and competing products, make your selection, pay, and are out of there in 5-10 minutes tops. What a novel concept: *they* actually come to *you*! Good old fashioned customer service, my people, soak it up. In all seriousness this is a great little store. I've bought everything from hand soap refills to bird feeders to painting supplies here. Recently they cheerfully helped me find the right size bolt for my bike wheel. They pack a lot into a little space, so chances are they'll have exactly what you're looking for. Plus, there's a nice big garden out front to boot! read more

I've been wandering through the cramped aisles of Hankins for almost fifteen years now. This is a True Value Hardware store like you find in the vast empty reaches of Southern Colorado or New Mexico, packed to the rafters with all things hardware, not really a franchise even with that logo and definitely owned, staffed and run by locals. is it the cheapest? Nope, retail and not retail-plus pricing. Do they have everything you need to remodel your bathroom. Probably not but there's a broad selection of plumbing, electrical, paint, hardware and garden basics, along with a giant assortment of glues and tape (why? I don't know) and an aisle of little drawers and bins filled with a zillion different kinds of screws, bolts, washers, and nuts. The staff, most of whom seem to have been working there since my first visit, is always helpful and friendly, there's free street parking in front, and for most of those doing-a-chore moments when I realize that I need a handful of hardware or some PVC elbows or a plug, Hankins is five minutes away and probably has what I need. read more

This Hardware store reminds me of the old hardware stores in the old country. Well, not really at least it reminds me of the old hardware stores on TV. And all seriousness though, this is a neat hardware store where you can find anything you're looking for if you're willing to look hard enough, or ask the nice people who work there that are willing to answer any question you may have. This store is stuffed to the gills. You need it, they have it, though it is quite likely you will need their assistance finding it. It is a throwback to to the days when people expected, and received, excellent customer service. It is not much of a "wander around" store, but frankly, I think the majority of our home improvement projects are extended in time because of the countless hours we spend wandering around some of the big box stores looking for just the right things. Coming to a place like Hankins, someone can walk you through all that you need, and hopefully eliminate (or at the very least drastically reduce) the number of "oops, I forgot X" trips. Just like what Danni D., said, this place is top notch. A family-owned hardware store that has all of the basic essentials packed into a one-story inner-city building. They have EXCELLENT service, knowledgeable employees, and fair prices. Plus they have an awesome example front yard/garden to give you real ideas and advice on how to setup your own garden! No, they aren't as big as a Home Depot or Lowes, but they are so much closer being located at 17th and Hawthorne. I love this place! I go here for home and business projects, and am always impressed by the selection of items that they can fit into such a tiny shop. This is my first stop for repairs, key changes, and painting. And if they item I need seems obscure or unlikely, I just call ahead and ask about it. No big deal :) But my favorite thing about Hankins is how friendly and helpful the staff is. In past visits to Home Depot I've felt talked down to and even brushed off by staff, it this NEVER happens at Hankins. He knelt on the road and examined my vehicle, easily determining the best-fit combination of nuts and bolts, for the given application. A true subject-matter expert. When I was just a wee Britta E. I often elected to help my father with the DIY chores round the house on the weekends. And by golly, do I have a ton of fond memories associated with these activities. I'd also like to think that I maintained a good deal of the skill and knowledge base acquired by said hours spent handing tools and problem solving. Somehow though, all of the above floods out of me the moment I set foot (or to put a finer point on it, rubber tire) near a big box home improvement store. Suddenly, I turn into a raging beast with but one goal: get what I came for and get out alive. Deep down, I think we instinctively know that there is a better way. Perhaps this knowledge is captured in hours spent at a much shorter stature, wandering the aisles of a small hardware store on Sunday afternoons before our towns became just another suburb and is buried somewhere deep in our collective memories. Can I get an amen? However it happened, I've rediscovered that knowledge and have come to share the good news: it's all at Hankins. These folks know what you're looking for even if you hardly have the words to describe it. They can help you find it, suggest other approaches, and give you the knowledge you need to complete the task. All in three minutes. Then you could just turn around, find yourself at the register, and skeedadle on outta there. But I like to linger and take in the odd metal/wood/chemical smells, find new tools I didn't know existed and dream up future projects. Who knew that friendly service paired with knowledge and reasonable prices could make all the difference? Oh, Hankins did, apparently. I wish I could single-handedly keep stores like this in business, if only to share them with my non-existent future children. Best finds? What the beau calls an egg beater hand drill (yah, non-electric ones still exist...and work great!) and a dual faucet water mixer, which was so old it wasn't in the computer system so they guy gave it to us for free. I have consistently gone here over the past 6 months as it is in close proximity to my home and has decent selection of items. However, the customer service is poor and I have heard store associates slandering customers immediately after the customer leaves the store on two different occasions. After a recent experience I plan to avoid spending money here in the future. After shopping in the store I returned to my car in their parking lot and found that myself and another customer were parked in by a Mercedes. I was with my wife and we had my infant son in the car. When I went back to ask for assistance, due to Covid-19 precautions I did not re-enter the store. One of the associates made a weak attempt to call out to the customers but then said there was nothing else he could do. I saw the man who owned the Mercedes talking to another associate and asked if they could ask him if the car was his. The associate refused to do so stating "we know him, it's not his car". This individual told me there was nothing further he could do to help but that I could call a tow truck and then asked that Ieave. I returned to the parking lot and assisted the other parked in customer to back out which took the better part of 20 minutes. Just as we had gotten her out of her spot the customer who owned the Mercedes walked out with two of the store associates, including the one who had declined to be helpful. I find the associates here unhelpful and disrespectful of customers. read more

Honestly, I wanted to go a diatribe about how the whole of the USA would be so much better today if we went back to a former culture of mom and pop shops who truly valued and cared about the given needs of their business. Unfortunately in this ever advancing economy, this ideal, is just a after thought to needing to get the best value for your money. Enter, Hankins Hardware! How this wonderfully convenient and well stocked family owned hardware store has flourish is a true testament to both the value and service of its owners and employees. Over the course of the last few years since buying a major fixer house in the area, I have gone there for literally every bit of needed hardware in my house, not once did I ever leave disappoint about cost or without the random needed part or tool. Also, the staff has been very helpful in regards to schooling me, in terms of what is required for the giving job at hand. So, if you care for "old fashioned" ideals while still getting the best value for your money, I strongly recommend Hankins Hardware! Bonus......Meow, for the in store cat! read more

Got to give this business props! I know more than I want to about construction, remodeling and repair of houses, especially older. My friends broke their front door lock cylinder - what the key goes into. I was able to repair it with some extra parts I had. When we went to Hankins to get new keys for the new cylinder, the hardware Dr Spocks quoted a ridiculously reasonable price for rekeying the lock. Not only is this a cool hardware, and helpful, they are very, very reasonably priced lock Spocks. But they are total honest pros though, they will not copy keys that say "do not copy" or "do not duplicate", but freely offer advice if you are polite. What other hardwares have a cool garden in front? Recommended! read more

These guys and gals are so great every time I come in with my little 1 year old--which is a lot these days as we just bought a 100 year old house. They try their best to entertain him with a piggy and popcorn while simultaneously identifying the obscure parts I'm describing as "the thing that connects with the part on the appliance." The store is small, but the selection has only let me down once, when apparently the part I needed was specific to my dishwasher. They educated me about what the part does and how to install it and put me in touch with the right store. It was above and beyond. read more

We recently moved in a new apartment that needed a few repairs, so we went here to pick up supplies. They have a very good stock of hardware, paint, etc. Even though it's a small looking store outside, the inside is packed with most of the things you need for home repairs or projects. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Also, everything were fairly priced. So yes, go support this mom n' pop shop! Also, there was a cat there roaming around the store when we got there, so that's a bonus!! CATS!! read more

I should have posted this review months ago, as I spent hundreds upon hundreds of dollars here while building out my own small shop. My store closed last month and I still had a few things I'd purchased here new in the package. I thought I'd bring them back, knowing they probably wouldn't take them (the receipts were a few months old), assuming I'd just give them back if they couldn't do a refund or exchange... just to lighten the load. They refunded my card-- no questions asked. This was more than Home Depot or Target did, and was totally unexpected for such a small shop. Maybe they didn't understand how meaningful this gesture was to me... to them it was just $20 something dollars... to me it was steps out of the enormous hole that comes when you close your retail store. I have always loved going into this store. The staff is sweet, knowledgeable, and sincere. Their prices are shockingly reasonable for a store of its size. I have since moved out of walking distance of the store, but I will still go here first for all of my hardware/home needs. read more

Really dug this store. I was looking around at hardware stores in the area, specifically to find one that would lend me a pair of bolt cutters. I needed bolt cutters because the key to the pad lock which was securing my bike to the rear of my car ended up being somewhere between Portland and Pensacola. After going to one store off Burnside, who informed me they "didn't have a pair of store bolt cutters", I found this one. This store reminded me much of the hardware stores back home. Not the Home Depots and Lowes and all that. They were happy to lend me a pair of cutters after I explained my situation and let them hold my ID. After about 15 minutes of intense strain and putting my entire body weight into the bolt cutter, I can say that MasterLocks are worth every penny. I guess the manager saw my frustration and brought out a pair of cable cutters that ended my troubles immediately. So, I reinvested in a cable and combination lock. Everyone from the manager to the clerks were extremely helpful. read more

I've stopped in here several times for assorted items ranging from ladders to sealant and glue and the staff have always been, quite literally, excited to help me find what I needed in thrity seconds or so. They don't have a hundred choices in screws like the big box stores, but the staff knows exactly where everything is and it's a nice little traditional hardware store. The front area is even landscaped nicely, instead of being paved parking, so be aware that if you plan on purchasing 10 bags of cement you might want to consider another option. I'm sure they'd still try to help you get what you need, though. It's a nice alternative to wandering the warehouse isles of the depot or whatever, especially if you just need that one thing and don't have the time to drive across town for it. read more

The shop is recessed behind a yard and is not obviously even a business until you enter. The store is stocked to the ceiling with an amazing variety of items. We were helped immediately and efficiently led around to secure the eight items on the list. This store is fantastic, and such a boon to our neighborhood. Everytime I go there they are so great and helpful, unlike the big box stores, or even Freddie's. It seems like such a small store, but I have never gone there and come away without what I needed. The prices are reasonable too. Things I have purchased over the course of the last year; a hoe, a rake, drip system connectors and emitters, spray paint, wall paint, painting tape, duct tape, 3 different grits of sandpaper, a sanding sponge and a paint scraper, 2 space heaters, a fan, de-icer for the side walk during the ice storm, quarter minus gravel, and some lumber to make bed slats, a pruning saw and some garden clippers. Oh, I almost forgot, all kinds of LED lightbulbs and landscape lights. They even make keys too. I seriously don't know what I'd do without them. Street parking, but lots of it, right in front of the store. read more

I needed a saw. I thought I remembered there being a True Value around here...drove by it the first time because it isn't right on the street like the other shops in the block and I was looking for the sign...this place was great! The have a garden growing in the "front yard", the place was busy (clearly a lot of regulars). I am not an urban farmer and I am pretty old. I wasn't expecting what I got. In the space of about ten minutes, two guys asked me if I needed help and the guy at checkout asked me how my day was. Where am I? Got my saw, and a couple of other cool things I couldn't live without. Nice work guys...stay that way. read more

They give excellent advice, and when they don't know something, they can refer you to someone in the area who does. They took care of a problem I was having with an older model lock and key when other hardware stores couldn't.
