I went in to purchase some plastic tubing and asked the cashier for some assistance. She asked a gentleman to help me, but he continued walking away from me. So he did not hear, or ignored the request. The cashier did not ask any of the other three people who were standing around to assist me. Do It Best is a nice neighborhood store. For things that need updating, replacing, or rehabbing in my old house, they do a great job of having what I need in stock. I find it fun to wander around in hardware stores, but when I need help finding something specific, they've always had someone available, and knowledgeable to get me what I need. Despite the fairly small size, they are doing a nice job of making it a safe destination during Covid times. Masks are required and appropriate spacing is clearly indicated for the checkout process. It will be nice when they are able to go back to handing out freshly popped popcorn, but for the time being, it's nice to see the empty machine as a reminder of simpler times. Having a neighborhood store is a wonderful thing, and Division Do It Best is a terrific example of this. read more

This would be a 5 star review if they were open on Sunday and/or they were open 30 minutes longer each day. I cannot actually understand how they are not open on Sunday. It's like a strange joke. If most people work roughly 9 to 5 and you are open 8:30 to 6 on weekdays, that means there's roughly 30, maybe 45 minutes any given weekday that I might reasonably make it in to your store, so now I have to make sure I'm planning precisely around your schedule. I assume a neighborhood hardware store's prime business is catering to individual DIYers in the neighborhood. Maybe I'm wrong and this store makes most of its money catering to contractors or something. (I assume if you're a contractor who needs to buy a lot of stuff often, you're more likely ordering directly from the supplier, or at least going out to Home Depot or Lowe's for the savings.) But if they're supposed to be providing for the neighborhood, then how can they even afford to be closed on Sundays? I just don't get it. Hours aside: The folks here do seem to care about helping you out. I got some somewhat dubious advice one time but it wasn't a big deal. Prices are more expensive than a big-box, of course, but I'd gladly pay more for convenience and -- more importantly -- to support local. Lastly, most of the time that I come here they're just about to close -- per above. I always apologize that I'm coming at the end of the day and the reactions I can get are always "cordial" at best, and never particularly polite. Along the lines of, "Uhh, it's fine, you only have about 5 minutes though." I assume they react that way because their hours suck and SO MANY people are coming in late that it gets to be a problem. But... like... sorry. I'd personally much prefer you have 1 fewer staffer on the floor at any time but you're open on Sundays and a couple hours later. read more

So helpful with those little projects that you need some help finding the right screws and washers that you won't ever find in the big stores. I try this place from time to time- it is the closest place for me- but it routinely disappoints with over the top high prices and less than courteous staff. Just tried to buy 2 items small- marked 69 cents on the bin- but at the register the price was jacked up to 99 cents- that kind of behavior to nickle and dime people at the register and hope they don't notice , then get rude and indignant with the customer if they do notice - is the ingredients of a business that will fail before too long. I really want to support local business- but not when they display these kinds of business practice and behaviors. There are plenty of reasonable honest small hardware a little more distance away, it is worth the drive. Watch your wallets folks! read more

Perfect customer service for two screws I needed for my Motorcycle that feel out on my way to work. Perfect timing

So many things are locked up that you're not allowed to get them without help. I waited for 10 minutes for someone to come unlock a small pruning saw for me. And then they wouldn't let me carry it up to the register by myself. Not first time this has happened (a bike light previousily) but it feels weird and insulting every time. Like you're about to give them hundreds of dollars right after they treat you like a criminal. They mumble there's tons of homeless theft. OK well congratulations you made another loyal customer feel uncomfortable because a homeless person wanted to steal a can of spray paint.. This over the top paranoia has prevailed since I started coming there in 2008 but gotten much worse. I've spent thousands of dollars here over the years. I just don't think I can do it any more and feel good about it. read more

I try my damnedest to always support local, and this is one place where it works out. For a modestly-sized store, they just about always have what you're looking for.. I've bought building supplies, electrical, plumbing, paint, and various types of tools there. I also really appreciate the staff there who will go above and beyond to help you figure out what you need for a given project, or do things like precision plexiglass cuts. I never felt judged for my lack of handiness, or when I asked simple questions. It's also pretty handy that I can walk to these guys opposed to having to drive to Montavilla or Happy Valley for HD/Lowe's. Definitely recommend. read more

This is a great little hardware shop. It doesn't have *everything* but they do seem to have a lot and can help you find what you need, even if you're not completely sure what that is. And I read that they're woman-owned! Pro-tip: you can buy glass and plexiglass here and have it cut to size-- and at no additional charge for the cutting! The only downside is that it was very difficult to communicate with the older gentleman who was in charge of that. He seemed to be hard of hearing, but even beside that it was clear that customer service wasn't his first priority. (Honestly, that's still so much better than going to Home Depot). They're open until 7pm too, which is later than a lot of other small hardware stores! read more

Poor choice for the Coivd-19 era. This used to be a fine store with acceptable selection and I used to come in here all the time. I figured I'd try to shop locally instead of ordering online for some items I needed. Store had no mechanism to control number of customers in store or flow of customers inside of store, so it was absolute chaos. People everywhere, employees squeezing past me in the cramped aisles with no warning (even though they have signs saying "stay 6 feet apart when possible"). I ended up just walking out. Over priced with a poor return policy. Went to return something that didn't fit, asked if I could when I purchased product. Well, when I went to return item, they said box was ripped and product was used, Yeah to see if it fit. Manager helped me and seemed to be looking for any reason not to replace my product. I called before I went. I wanted some cut plexiglass, so I asked if they had some..." yes" told the man the Size I needed. "Yes we have that" but, "we won't cut it till you get here." So I rushed (walked) 2 miles with my walker to get there. Guess what? No plexiglass that size. Ever called a place and asked if they had something and when you got there they didn't. Whenever I go into a Lowe's or Home Depot I feel completely overwhelmed. Inevitably the two small things I'll need will be on opposite ends of the store. Or at least I will be told by a disinterested employee that the two things are on opposite ends of the store, then I will discover they are both in the middle store on sequential aisles. I end up leaving with something that I didn't even want and leave disappointed. This was not my experience today when I went in to pick up some stuff at Division Hardware. This place is small, yet it has all your basic (and some not-so-basic) things. Sure, it doesn't have a nursery, lumber or refrigerators, but 98% of times I go into hardware stores I'm going for...hardware. As soon as it was evident I had no idea where things were, an employee asked me if I needed help. He didn't just show me where things were, he actually took the time to listen to the project I was doing and steered me to the right stuff (and told me how to use it). When I got what I needed I went to the front and paid. Then, almost out the door, I remembered the coupon I had in my purse. Shoot. "Um, is there anyway I could redeem this?" The cashier totally went above and beyond so I could get my discount. If I wasn't already sold on the place, this would have done it. Of course, once I got back to my place I realized that there are other projects to be done. Something tells me I'll be back to Division Hardware very soon. read more

This has been my local bike-or-walking close hardware store for 15 backbreaking endless agonizing years of home renovation, God bless 'em. Early on I learned I could open an account there--how Mayberry is that? So I can even show up sans wallet & take my goodies away, getting handy itemized bills at the end of the month. They really do have almost anything you need, along with caring employees who know their way around. Sometimes I'll explain the specifics of my project and end up with a committee of them tossing ideas around--it's like having 5 dads! And it's the perfect place when you don't want two dozen screws in a blister pack, but just two! Or a hook! Or a foot of chain or a yard of electric wire.... you get the idea. Is it possible they corrupted me years ago and earned my unquestioning loyalty when I WON the $500 merchandise prize??? (Yes, I really did !!!) The best part was when an employee told me how glad everyone was that a regular customer won for a change.... yeah, I'm a regular! They know me there! Sweet! And if that's not enough: FREE POPCORN! I'd just like to re-emphasize my original posting. I went there recently to get paint and had the paint guy match a swatch for me. I went home and, after painting a bit, decided the color was totally wrong. I went back to Division Hardware with my barely-used can and, super apologetically, asked the guy if he could tweak it for me. He cheerfully spent the next twenty or so minutes with me tweaking, mixing, drying, re-tweaking, mixing drying, etc. until the new shade was perfect. It was WAY above and beyond, and the guy was so nice, and they didn't charge me anything. This in contrast to a horrible experience I had at Home Depot where two guys at the paint counter both rolled their eyes, sighed, guilt-tripped me, shamed me, rolled their eyes again, told me it was my fault, told me they didn't have to do anything for me but FINE OK I will try to tweak the paint but it's YOUR FAULT if you hate it, and then they both passed the paint off to another guy so I had to explain myself all over again. It took a solid 40 minutes to get my paint back from those assholes. Die Home Depot! Viva Division Hardware! read more

Stopped by to get a specific garbage can, which was listed at a certain price online, $19.99. When I made it to the store, I had to wait a moment for an employee to get it down for me (the stock was stored up on a tall shelf). No problem, I can be patient. But then I realized the shelf price was listed at $26.99. That's a pretty big difference in cost from what I found online barely an hour earlier. I had written the item number down and compared, and it was in fact the same item. The employee went to look at their database and it came up at the same retail price the shelf showed. I pulled up my browser and showed them what I was coming up with, and everyone stood around, scratching our heads for a while. Finally a supervisor came over and clued in myself and the 3 employees that had intermittently been assisting that apparently the company "Do It Best" is a parent company that lists online pricing differently than what a store may carry. Though two employees assured me they thought they could honor the price, the supervisor didn't even entertain the thought. I was informed that I could order it online as listed (for $19.99) and have it delivered a week from today to the store. This was my first trip here and it wasn't exactly successful. I don't go out of my way to study the policies and procedures of every shop I frequent, especially as a first-time customer, nor do I expect that I should have to do so. TL;DR: Price discrepancy that didn't end in my favor. Employees were nice and did their best to help out. Online vs. In-store pricing may vary wildly; buyer beware. read more

I love this store! If I need to replace some hardware, their staff will take one look at what I brought in and go right to the bin, out of hundreds, and find exactly what I need. Store is clean and prices are very fair! They have a huge variety of items, well organized. And they offer to help me carry out after I make a large purchase. One of the cashiers lacks in customer service skills; she gave me a lot of attitude. And once, I wanted to know if the lumber had been treated, and I had to be pretty assertive to get the answer (one floor staff had no clue and thought that should be the end of the story, but when I went to someone else, they answered my question). read more

I'm over 70, just a birder & gardener. I was following instructions in a book to set up 2 safe birdhouses for backyard nesters, but I hit a wall with the need to cut metal stuff, which the big box store I tried didn't do. When I explained my project to Matt, the store manager, he personally worked with me. He cut a 10' rebar in 2 pieces, punched a hole in the cap for a 8" metal duct piece, so I could hang it as a baffle on the pole, special ordered a 2nd cap, which he later also punched a hole in, found the various small fittings, most of which I'd never seen before, & sent me on my way happy as a clam and a devoted fan of this store. read more

After returning to Do It Best/Division Hardware time after time, I have to say I mostly agree with Naga below. If you know what you are looking for, and you know they will have it, this can be a great local hardware store. I have found them to not be the best resource, and though I often return out of convenience, I find myself going to competing hardware stores most of the time. The problem? Either they simply do not have something I am looking for, or they have a small selection and I need more offerings, or I'm looking for expertise and I simply can't find it there. I went in looking for a pretty standard M5 x.8 metric screw the other day and found them to be less-than-remarkable. It took a while for me to get help and when someone finally did help, they simply looked for the item in the same places as I, concluding like me that they didn't have the screw. This, a universal size for screws on vintage bicycles. They've not had any screws or washers I've needed, actually. Many of the salespeople have a lack of basic shop expertise, requiring customers to explain what they're looking for to an extent I don't find at competing shops. Ace Hardware on Woodstock is a great resource, IMHO, with an abundance of salespeople waiting to help you. Better prices also. For basic items, like mineral spirits or steel wool, Division Hardware/Do it Best can provide you the ease and convenience you need. read more

They are helpful and informative, and are always there to assist me with key cutting (top notch!) or whatever project I'm working on.
