What a store? We went in for kitchen remodeling. We were excited to have so many options. Lilly helped us make the perfect selection. We wanted an under mounting sink for the counter and we picked the Julian brand. They had it in stock ready to go. The faucet selection was just as smooth. Sometimes you may have too many to choose between, however they had just the right amount. The pull and knob selection was expansive. It took a while to narrow down our choices and went back and forth for a week. Lilly was so patient with us it was unbelievable. I guest she must be used to people going back and forth on decisions. The store is top notch and carry too brands. If you can't find it in the store, they will research it and find it for you. I'm very happy with the service and selection. I can't wait to remodel the two bathroom we have scheduled for later this year or next. They have some beautiful bath tubs displayed. read more

I really liked working with Chown Hardware when we did a major house remodeling project in the late 90s and a kitchen and bath remodeling in another house in the teens. Service then was friendly and helpful, and the store was well staffed. I do not know what happened, but the Chown Hardware I experienced today when I was looking for a bathroom fixture was not Chown I used to know. Here is my opinion: The change was apparent the moment I engaged with the receptionist. No smile. It seemed like she was going out of her way to find reasons not to help us. When I said I was looking for a bathroom light fixture, all she said was "we don't have many on display." The chilly attitude was palpable. The subtext I picked up was "You rube. Don't you know we're not Home Depot?" I said that I understood that. The receptionist said that she'd see if someone was available to help us. When I looked around, I noticed two things. The first is that what was already a high-end showroom had gone even more high end. Maybe it has gone to their head. Second, the area where I was accustomed to sitting with a sales person at her desk to go through catalogues and make selections was almost deserted. There were two rows of about four desks each, and only one was occupied. The rest were empty. After a while a sales person walked up to me. She said that they had very few bathroom light fixtures to choose from. How is that for showing enthusiasm about helping a customer find what they want? I explained that I understood Chown's business model, but that didn't break the ice. Here's an idea: instead of assuming that everyone they're seeing for the first time has wandered into someplace they don't belong, maybe Chown's personnel could use a helpful and friendly script that goes something like this: Me: I am interested in a bathroom light fixture. Chown: Great! I am sure we can help you. Now, we don't have many fixtures on display because our selection is so large that there isn't enough room, BUT we'd be happy to have one of our sales people sit down with you and show you our inventory online. Me: I would love that! Chown: Great! Our sales people are busy helping other customers now, but if you could come back at (give a time the same day if possible) someone would be delighted to help you! Me: Deal! I get it. For some reason, someone in management at Chown has made the decision to cut staff to the point where, unlike before, there aren't sales people available to help customers as they arrive. But to have just two sales people in that huge store at mid-morning? What are they thinking? I was ready to leave, but my husband went ahead and took advantage of half hour opening in the sales person's schedule to pick a suitable fixture from the online selection. My husband, who isn't always easily pleased, was very happy. The showroom is well lit and very well stocked. We had a return to make, and that went seamlessly, something that doesn't happen very often! I was impressed by the entire shop. Chown really went the extra mile for me today. Jason (Chown) helped me solve a problem and save me a ton of money. A screw in the door-lock broke off in the face plate on my Pearl District high-rise unit. And this lock was installed 12 years ago by Chown. So Jason diligently worked through their computer system and found a little bitty screw (for pennies) to fix my door lock as opposed to replacing with a new mechanism, plus the hours and hours of my labor to figure out re-installation. I highly recommend Chown if you need parts and repair in your high-rise, home or condo! And they actually removed the screws from a new door assembly and sold me just the screws. To me that is going beyond the extra mile when they could've sold me the entire unit at full price. Note that Chown has a really "fab" show room to select fixtures for your home fix-it-up or remodel projects! Go there! I know what I'm talking about because I used to be in the remodel business! Now I'm retired--avoiding home repair--seldom hammer anything except "hot toddies" and cold micro-brews at happy hour! I'm not much of a Yelp reviewer, but my experience here was worth noting. I have been building/remodeling two bathrooms over the last few months and during that time have been to just about every plumbing, appliance, lighting and tile place in Portland. And most of them provide exceptionally lousy service... Ferguson: couldn't get them to return phone calls or emails, and they wouldn't let us buy the stuff, even after we went in and were standing there with a credit card in hand. Ann Sacks: ugh. Beautiful tile, ridiculous service. The list goes on and on... I called Chown yesterday (after I opened a sink I had purchased online several months ago only to find it was a three hole, not a single as we thought) looking for a vanity top. Mariah was not only exceptionally helpful, exploring several options with me and even looking in the warehouse for a top that had been returned, but cheerful and friendly, too. And this was when I was still calling around trying to find a sink to buy, not buying one there at Chown. This was the polar opposite of our experience at almost every other place we have shopped in Portland. I called her back this morning and ordered the top. It's a small, inexpensive item in the scheme of the beautiful things they carry at Chown, but I was given the type of service that one would expect if spending thousands of dollars. Crown carries a lot of higher end products so their prices are higher than big box stores. They still beat most online shopping for the same products. I have used Cohen before and had no problems. However, this time the service left a lot to be desired. Walked around for about 10 minutes and although sales people looked at us, no one acknowledged us. Once we searched out someone we were well taken care of and he helped us get the right options. The problem was after they got our money. We were told 2 weeks. After 2 1/2 weeks I called and left 3 messages over 3 days and did not get a response to any of them. Only on my 4th call did I find out that it was in except for 2 little screws. Prices are good for the quality of product but customer service needs som Just got an e-mail 6 months later that our 2 screws are in will call. Now have a 45 minute drive to pick up 2 screws. I would think good customer service would just be to mail them to us! read more

Great service and selection. There is a good range of price points although it does cater to a higher end market than big box stores. Getting the right item to fill the right need is important and having a good selection of options and a staff that can help provide direction and insight into current trends, what looks good together and what brands have the traits you are looking for is helpful. We are changing out all the door hardware in the house among other things and they had the best value in quality of product and service. We have had occasional communication issues with different staff from time to time, but nothing to get upset about because there is always someone willing to step in and help. It seems like they stay pretty busy there! read more

I'm deeply impressed by the service and follow through Chown showed me today and yesterday. I bought a sink and faucet at Chown almost 2 years ago. Last week the pop-up drain in the faucet got stuck in the shut position. The plumber yesterday said it's a manufacturers' flaw. I could have pursued this on my own, but it would have taken a lot of effort to find the paperwork, call the manufacturer, describe the problem in terms industry people understand, etc., etc. That could have cost me hours of work. Enter the efficient and helpful team at Chown, who instantly accessed my records, contacted the manufacturer for me, discovered whether the broken part was under warranty and got back to me: in less that 24 hours! Result: the manufacturer is replacing the part free of charge. Without the team at Chown, I don't think I would have gotten this result. I'm working full time, and this "to do" just wouldn't have made it to the top of my list. Home Depot is less expensive is you're buying light bulbs. But if your buying fixtures, this lesson teaches me it pays to work with a company that offers follow up well beyond the transaction. This place is such a mixed bag. Came here once and was completely ignored after wandering around for 15 minutes looking at cabinet hardware. No one offered to help me and the prices felt steep. Came another time and was asked if I needed help but the person they directed me to was busy and distracted and I'm pretty sure forgot about me. The most recent time I came here I had the most helpful gentleman who guided me so simply to various entry door hardware options. He gave me detailed information but also knew when to give me time alone to mull things over. Not pushy but attentive. After the first two times I didn't think I'd ever come back but the company we are getting our new door from has a discount at this place so I reluctantly went. Glad I did! I needed to repair a broken Baldwin door handle, so I made a call to Chown and was put in contact with a saleslady that new exactly what I needed and they had it in stock. Went down to their store and picked it up at will call the part was there, very easy. I had another problem with the door handle in that there was a cross threaded screw. I was sent to the showroom and a nice man named Tony helped me get it fixed in no time at no charge. Hard to find such great customer service these days, but not at this store. We placed an order of over 10k..the rep we worked with quit half way through the project.. she stayed and pushed the sale through just long enough to get her commission.. the project stalled because of each new person that came on to help never followed through with anything or they quit..dang can we get a break.. Finaly I needed to returned a few fixtures speced by the rep incorrectly and she ordered more than what we needed to boost her commision. I was helped by a gal who worked in a diffrent department.. finaly somebody with some common sense and great attitude.. got the returns handled.. I figured I was in for a huge argument based on all the previous issues but thank goodness I was able to be helped by someone with some brains.. all this to say I will not be using Chown for any of our future projects. read more

Chown is high-end, not only in terms of what many shop for, but in the general caliber of their clients: pros shop there, and it's not unusual to overhear a builder, designer or decorator working through a catalog or mountain of catalogs with one of Chown's personnel. And speaking of personnel, they're frequently VERY occupied with phone transactions, research, and any other imaginable form of sales and customer service. Given that, I think some of the service-related complaints arise from a lack of understanding of how busy everyone is, how informed most clients are expected/hoped to be, and how much merchandise and parts thereof passes through the place. Chown would have to be attached to a vast warehouse to be able to stock even a small fraction of what's sold there--and "in stock" frequently means "at the distributor/manufacturer," and not in some imaginary stadium-sized, labyrinthian-Smithsonian-sub-basement-endowed warehouse next door (or beneath the city). Yes, with that kind of volume of goods and level of interactions, there will be screw-ups; but probably half or more of those are due to clients' misunderstandings as to the nature of the business. As for not getting unrequested attention, be aware that many browsers are conducting their own research, designing on the fly, and not yet ready to order, or even ask questions. I browse the place frequently, and am glad to be left to my own devices; when I have a question or want to place an order, I ask, and I get service--good service. This is true of the few other suppliers to the trade who display their merchandise, but really, are busy enough without putting pressing business aside for hand-holding. There ARE some retail suppliers with a smaller range of goods who DO sell out of their on-site storerooms, and for anyone who needs something ordinary NOW, that's the place to go. As for the professional, no-display suppliers, you can't order from them unless you know what you want--and often, you'll have learned that you want it by browsing at Chown. It pays to know what you're doing, and to know where you are: if you're so informed, Chown is a fine place to shop. read more

It might SEEM expensive, but to find one-of-a-kind hardware and fixtures, and get exceptional service...you actually end up saving money!!! I have had serious issues with our business door and lock. I've admired Chown's selection for many years but never thought I could afford to shop there. I went there recently to buy some new entry hardware for a new front door. They worked with me to find something in my price range and made me feel comfortable (and excited!) about my decision. They poured over the details to make sure this would work with my door (I was not working with a contractor). I've been a designer for a long time and have gone to Chown for many of my client's needs. The customer service, however, is really deteriorating. Recently the store was empty and the sales associate couldn't even bother to get up from her desk to show me the display fixtures. She simply said I wouldn't find what I was looking for. Funny, but I'd already found it online and pointed that out to her. She seemed more focused on getting back to the assortment of food and half eaten bowl of yogurt that was sitting on her desk. In contrast, the sales professionals at Chown were amazing--I might have received the best customer service that I can remember.
