I had a horrible experience at this Ace Hardware Powell Villa and having been a customer of several other Ace Hardware locations in several states that I have lived in I am appalled by the interaction I encountered with David and the others near closing time. Now I understand that I arrived near closing and my transaction would be quick but that was not the case for several reasons. First I am trying to buy a missing bathroom sink aerator that was missing from the sink on a private rental when I moved in November. Few weeks ago the noticed there was water under the sink and isolated the issue to the missing aerator as it was spraying water into a hole near the faucet. The condo is old 1970s and the sink is the original not sure who made it but I went to an Ace Hardware at a different location and a nice gentleman helped and sent me home with two different sizes of aerator to try. At home the condo they were not the right ones male vs female parts, was not aware of that. I went to this Ace Hardware on Powell to exchange and buy the correct one and they couldn't help me find a suitable replacement, nor accept the existing parts for replacement because each Ace Hardware is owned by different ownership?!?!?! And after explaining to them that I don't have the information about the sink (David who was rude during the entire conversation) demanded I leave because he was done listening to the conversation. My situation was, after being told 1. Go somewhere else, local plumbing store called George Moreland Plumbing, 2. Refusal to accept the return of the products because it's a different store purchase, and 3. The lack of customer service and irate treatment from this location. I wouldn't recommend this location nor will I be returning there. I am completely understanding they were closing and they couldn't help me find a suitable replacement part but everything else was escalated because of David's inability to provide great customer service. As a long-time Ace Hardware customer I have always had positive experiences with the staff who are so helpful and friendly always willing to stop and answer your questions and share information. That was not case with this location on Powell and 122nd in Portland Oregon and that is very disappointing. I will reaching out to the store owner. read more

Ace is the place. This little store is fantastic. I have a 1950's ranch house that generally needs weird outdated plumbing pieces or just hard to find things from the 50's and this little store always seems to have what I need. All the employees seem to know enough about what they sell to be helpful unlike those dumb assholes at Home Depot. If you didn't know it, you would guess the store is an acronym for A-holes to Customers Everyday. I go here about once or twice a month out of complete convenience and find very few staff there tolerable at best. Staff complain A LOT. About each other, about customers, about literally everything. Makes me wonder if the only job interview question is - "can you be a jerk to customers?" If you answer yes, you're in. If you're not a jerk, then at the very least ignore them. Seriously, they take pride in being this way and it seems that half the time I hear them bragging about their run-ins with customers. I don't think the oldest male employee has ever muttered a positive sentence in his life. I give them two stars because they typically have what I need in a pinch and provide some great services like screen repair and plexiglass cutting unlike the big corporate box stores. Here's a great story to chew on. There was a guy that worked there for several years, but is now long gone. He would wear a cowboy hat and dress in Nascar jacket often. I walked in one time and was looking around in the seasonal area. He was on a ladder about 10 feet away. I guess he thought I was out of earshot and thought I was going to ask him a question because he kept muttering under his breath, "go the f away" and "leave me alone" repeatedly. You don't go here to for the service, just the convenience. It's a bizarre business model. read more

This is a shoutout to Erik! I purchased a hose reel a while back but didn't set it up until recently. It had an issue causing it to not work, and I tried with the manufacturer to get help for over a week. Finally, I called the store and Erik assured me they'd help. I brought the reel in, and he took a lot of his own time to help troubleshoot before agreeing that it was broken. He went ahead and just swapped it out for a new reel -- thank you so much; I will be a customer for life (or as long as I live in Portland)! read more

I like the store and what they carry but I marked a 1 star because of the service I gotten from female cashier, who was a bit unwelcoming. She would speak and talk to everyone else white but to non white person she would give the cold shoulder. I still said hello to her even though she didn't want to acknowledge I was in line, the only person in line. A simple "I'll be with you in moment" would have been customer service, when she walked away while I'll was in line and saw the other cashier was a still busy, she decided to help. I wanted to support a locally run small hardware store, but they are all different. When I got a $10 off coupon (for this location) in the mail, I thought I'd pick up a nice tool for a bargain. You can't exactly see stock shopping online, but some items I found did say they were available at other Ace locations, and not this one. Well, I went there with a shopping list, and they have some quality tools but the classic USA-made stuff was scarce. I asked for help finding something, and the guy acted annoyed to be bothered. When I finally got up to the checkstand, the coupon "didn't work." I asked why, checked the list of excluded brands, nope, not on there. The clerk had no answer, apology, just a blank stare. The price was decent so I paid and left the coupon on the counter. Yes, I was there during the Coronavirus pandemic, but I have decided that this location is not worth another trip. I am amazed at the level of service I received this past week. I have been doing a lot of home projects these past few weeks as most of us have, I ran into a situation where I had ordered deck paint on line, when I applied it I was short by a number of gallons. I called everywhere to see if I could procure a color match, no one would come through until I talked to "Eric" he answered my call with full knowledge of the product and offered to color match 4 gallons and have them ready the next morning. This is definitely our "neighborhood" hardware store. It's about .2 miles from my house, and has come in very very handy when we needed Fix-a-Flat, a snow shovel, hardware for the house and car, and cleaning supplies. The staff are extremely helpful and knowledgable and are always on hand if you have a question or can't locate at item. This shop is far from modern or glitzy but there's something very old-timey and welcoming about it that reminds me of my Midwest hometown. I like popping in here from time to time. They seem to have practically everything for the car, home cleaning & maintenance, toys, lawn and garden supplies, even fresh popcorn free (I think?) for customers. My Darling Husband and I like this Ace Hardware Store. We shop here when we need Help fixing Smaller Things around Our Condominium. They can also Make you a set of Keys!!! The last time we were at this Ace store we remembered to purchase some Paper Towels for Our Kitchen Paper Towel dispenser. I have purchased some inexpesive felt Pads for the Bottoms of Our Dining Room Chairs, which were given to Us by a Friendly Neighbor... she's a Widow now. I check in on her every Once in a While. I think she's selling her Red Car. I don't remember what Model it is. It was her Late Husband's when he was living. I heard he passed away Suddenly. Anyway, This Ace store carries a Bunch of Washers, should you need them. I think it's like Thousands of Washers! Oh,... and Sue still remembers me from when I worked nearby. read more

Bought a gun safe here recently. They were helpful, polite and efficient. They ordered it for me and helped me load it into my truck when it arrived at the store a few days later. I went back a few days ago to price out some materials for a home made hot tub heat exchanger and the guy I interacted with said some weird stuff to me. He told be the materials I was looking to buy were "way to expensive" and that they didn't carry the other components I needed. I decided to have a look for myself because they were very common plumbing components and found them after five minutes of looking. He wasn't rude and seemed like he wanted to help but came up short. No big deal, all the other staff were nice folks. I'll happily shop at Ace over the orange hell over at mall 205 that place is full of a bunch of... never mind. This store is in my neighborhood so I try to spend my money there but will not be back after a recent visit for a bag of quick set cement, I was charged $9.59, when the same item cost $4.97 at Home Depot. This place is awesome! I recently bought a car and got new plates for it at the DMV, I didn't have any licence plate screws and didn't have any luck finding any in my messy garage. I went to Ace Hardware in hopes of finding the screws but I didn't know much about sizes or which ones to buy so I asked an employee to help. He tried a few on until he found the right size, then he proceeded to screw my plate on for me. The total cost was 50 cents but the man didn't charge me anything. The lady at the front was so busy with chitchatting with co-worker , and didnt even ask for the membership , then charged the membership sale items for full price . I asked for refunded the difference $8 , she made mistake again . She refunded only $ 4 . Didn't even say sorry , and checking another customer on the other side . ARE YOU SERIOUS ???? I have been patronizing this store for over a decade. Though I no longer live in the neighborhood, I save my 'need' list till I am on that side of town, they are that good. What I like? A good selection of most everything you need from a hardware store. No lumber or live plants, but hardware,tools,and a great selection of fasteners.. not Winks level there,but pretty darn good. A staff that has been there for a long time,and know what they got and how to use it. Their prices are competative with the big box hardware stores, and you can get in and out in a quarter of the time. . And where it is. The folks that work there are top rate. I can approach anyone on the floor and get a key made, two gallons of paint mixed, find that arcane tool that I don't even know the name of, and get the right product to get rid of that funky fungus ring on my lawn. The only downside? They dont have a store in my part of town. And who really wants to go to outer Southeast? read more

In a nutshell: Poor customer service, condescending clerks. Workers prefer socializing among themselves over assisting customers, especially if a customer is a 'stranger'. If you know the people that work there and have similar background/or are a longtime customer, by all means continue patronizing this store. New shoppers should look elsewhere or else be disappointed leaving the store with the proverbial bad taste in your mouth. I don't expect this store to survive another generation. I just called to ask about pressure washers. I chose to call an Ace store specifically hoping to patronize local business owners. A man eventually provided me with brand and basic specs on the three pressure washers they carry. I then asked if they were electric or gas powered. "*SIGH* Hold on." (In a frustrated tone.) First - it's a basic question for pressure washers and if you work there you should know. (It's not Home Depot - you have a limited number of SKUs.) Second - if you are a locally owned retailer competing with large hardware stores like HD and Amazon.com you should treat EVERY call like it is gold. I have been sadly remiss in failing to post this review previously. Several months ago a part broke inside the doorknob of my front door, so the knob would come off in your hand if you tried to pull the door open. Being a real cheapskate, I decided to look for a replacement part rather than buy a whole new doorknob/lock set. I tried two different locksmiths, two big box stores, and two other hardware stores. Nobody had the part. This Ace store was my last resort. The person who helped me was very polite and spent a lot of time looking in the fastener drawers for something that would work. He finally found a suitably sized metal washer, which would need to be ground down in two places in order to fit. So he offered to grind it while I waited. He must have spent a total of at least twenty minutes helping me. The new part works great in my door and he only charged me for the cost of the washer. Amazing service. read more

i try to buy local but i have just made my last visit to this store. two statements: It's hardware not rocket science. It's a job and the job is about the CUSTOMER experience. Employee notes: Brett is a dick and not worth spending one second talking to. i watched him literally pouting because he stepped away from the check out line for his snack and an actual customer walked up to make a purchase. The register girl actually took him to the other register rather than simply speaking to the customer. Now we shall see the thrust of my relatively negative review. at each of my last 5 visits over the last 3 weeks the employees are having a great time, at the expense of the customers experience. Its awkward to shop when the employees are giggle farting with each other and cold and almost hostile with shoppers. This can also be seen with the few women that work the checkout. stern and terse with customers warms and chatty with fellow employees no matter what part of the transaction they are in. literally slow a check out to chit chat with a fellow employee or but kiss a big wig. The prices here are often higher than homedepot. The selection is often more limited but, the idea of supporting local owned is worth it until you realize they simply so not give a damn about you as a customer. I have 4 projects I am in the middle of. I will go to homedepot and lowes. If i am not going to get good service at least I can get a good price and better selection. Might try again in 5 or 6 months but for my money, stay away. read more
