You gotta love a little mom and pop hardware store that can stand up to the big orange box and the big blue box store and still eek out a place to be here in Portland. For such a small place, there were tools crammed everywhere. I came in just to get some wire connectors, nothing big and I didn't feel I needed to venture out to Home Depot to get it. I've walked past Ankeny Hardware many times and it was time to wander in. The guys were very helpful and within 10 minutes I had my connectors and was out the door. I could easily stop in here from time to time to support local businesses like this. Without places like this we are doomed to big boxes everywhere with no personality. Just saying. Enjoy.

Storming Norman....GOTTA LOVE THIS GUY! Check this out: 1. Closing Time 3:00 - current time 3:10 Dollied a product across the street for a customer, note on door said "Back in 10 min". 3:10 Storming Norman returns. One other customer waiting, he lets us both in. First customer takes 5 mins. (3:15) I take 45 minutes of his time "OFF THE CLOCK". Yes, OFF THE CLOCK!!! He's helping me FREE! Not only is he helping get the correct part ( which 9 other big box retailers didn't have or had a clue as to what I needed with no part number or serial number) Storming Norman had a brain AND the knowledge to know out of 35,000 parts ( think of an IKEA Store with everything crammed into 5,000 Sq Ft of space) which part I needed, but also how to reverse the direction of motor so it would suck instead of blow. Only at 4:12 to he inform me that he was supposed to be at a dinner party at 4:30 AND he lives a 30 mins away from the store. So Storming Norman STILL had to close up the store, drive home and more then likely spend another 30 minutes getting purdy for the party! So that means he was at least 5:25 AND then whatever travel time to get to the party! The worse part of it, is he was gonna tell his wife he was gonna be late! I told him "tell her it's all my fault". I will be making my FIRST STOP next time at Ankeny Hardware for ALL MY HARDWARE NEEDS from now on & I live 10 miles, 40 mins of my time round trip to get the right part at the right price the FIRST time is well worth it! I suggest you do the same. You can also order on line or call the store directly and ask for Storming Norman. He Doesn't know that he now has a nickname!

Bottom screw is the rare one for the lamp (other two were failed attempts)

Shopped here sporadically since moving to Portland a couple months ago (light bulbs, epoxy, etc). Recently took an antique porcelain lamp out of storage from 10years ago when a relative passed. A tiny screw holding a handle in place was missing. Went to multiple stores (Hippo Hardware was also immensely helpful), but could never find a size to work. Came back a couple weeks ago to Ankeny thinking I'd ask guidance. Not only did they refer me to a place in town that might work (it was closed that day) but....apparently I dropped the piece of tape w screw in it when I left. They found it and not only didn't toss it, but held it behind the register for weeks. When I finally had time to address this again yesterday, i realized I was missing the screw. Tore my apartment apart looking for it. Figured I'd try a moonshot of having left it at Ankeny somehow and sure enough Patrick knew exactly what I was talking about and where it was. Thank you, Ankeny Hardware! Will be the first spot I go to for hardware needs for as long as I live in Portland.

I agree and when I needed a small item, this is the first place I went. The woman working was rude and unhelpful, so I left. Upon leaving, I saw racist graffiti on the pillar of their store. Two weeks later, the racist graffiti is still there. It's too bad they choose to leave it. Poor experience overall for sure. * edited to one star: hi again Steve. I removed the previous review because of your reply that named the employee I complained about. I cannot allow her name to be used, it's unethical. My behavior is, as always, honest and completely unproblematic. How about you erase the racist graffiti, or do you not even know Billie Holidays music?

Really, I see two use cases for the store: 1. If something breaks in your old house, you can bring it in to show to them and see if they have a replacement. 2. If you have time to kill and want to get lost, you can wander around their giant maze of a store, looking at stuff. I'm not sure the store is organized enough to be useful for large projects. For example, if you wanted to get a full set of cabinet knobs, or multiple windows, you may or may not be able to find matching ones of them all. But if you want one of each to replace your current ones, sure! That said, staff has always been great. They do their best to help and know the store better than anyone. So if you're looking for something specific, it's worth it to ask. You can email in with pictures and they can look around for you. They accept returns for two weeks which is great because sometimes, no matter how many times you measured, what you got doesn't fit. Some of the descriptions on their website that really ring true: "we are mostly just a wacky junk store" "it may take many days to take a good rummage around" "we offer assorted collectibles, trinkets, whatnots, and whoziwhatsits" And be sure to look out for hippos of all kinds distributed through the store! Maybe a fun scavenger hunt for kiddos?

I placed a pick up order from online and the cashier called the pick up order to be brought forward. The customer service and cashier argued back and forth about whether or not I even placed the order or was at the right store. I confirmed the information through the cashier while he was quite literally hacking up a lung. I can only assume how condescending the customer service people were with how the cashier was also sour to me. Eventually someone else came up to take the line and told me I could go back and they'd fulfill my order. Dumb and dummer were trying to redirect me to purchase a different bag of salt even though I'd already paid for what I wasn't getting. The system ace hardware was pretty stupid and this review isn't about how they couldn't fulfill my order, I don't blame the customer service people for the mix up because that was out of their control. The customer service employees (several. Very braindead expressions) just shrugged and said the only thing to do was cancel the order through my phone. Thank you for reading this novel of a review. Probably a sitcom working there and free entertainment to shoppers. Expect no service. A man was also waiting (from the time I arrived in the store until a little before I left) for a case to be unlocked. Surprising it took so long to help the man considering the group of 19 year old alternative kids in the back.
