We've purchased tool boxes, a variety of electric tools, hardwood dollies for moving furniture, tarps, packing blankets, tie downs, batteries, gloves, floor jacks, creeper, variety of tool sets, hand truck, shop stools, chain, etc. You do have to be careful buying some things here as some tools may not last as long as some of the higher quality name brands. They do carry a lot of 'made in China' tools, hence the cheaper prices. Bittersweet. I enjoy browsing the aisles, so many items are cheaper than anywhere else. It's the place for low dollar stuff like: latex gloves, zip ties, handheld tools that you'll use a few times, small household and toolshed items, etc. However, I'd pass on items that affect your safety. And I'd probably pass on anything over $50 too. Returns are a minor pain! Long lines and the (nice) cashier is trying to cross-sell a protection plan to the person in front of me. She slowly requests and inputs the customer info while the line continues to grow. Unreal! When it was my turn to return an item WITH receipt, they require address, email, phone to create a customer record. Get with the times man, that kind of return policy BS is why people flock to Costco, Amazon and Walmart. read more

Harbor Freight is a visible symptom of our postmodern condition, like Walmart. But it serves a purpose. Tools fall into two categories. Keepers and Other. Other means they might be lost, doesn't matter if they break, or they are inherently unbreakable. Harbor Freight supplies the Other category, and does so competently. Generally hammers are inherently unbreakable. So there is not much immediate functional difference between one from Harbor Freight and a craftsman one. Not saying there isn't a psychic difference in hammers, and maybe those Keeper hammers are ones to be left to progeny. Things with motors are different. If you are going to use a motor item continuously, so as to cause it to fail if it is going to, within the warranty period, go ahead. But if you want a motor item that is a Keeper, you can't afford to fail on the job, or you expect to use on and off over an extended period, beyond the warranty, Harbor Freight is not your supplier. The warranty period is a useful, though inexact signal of manufacturing quality between maker and customer. The Toyota Way, Six Sigma and the like capture the value of quality in manufacturing, and the durability of the end products. Most Harbor Freight products don't get that. But even so, I have bought 5 pound hammers, claw hammers, tape measures, electrical multimeters and a highly useful laser level from Harbor Freight. They are a source for China Inc solar panels for experimenters. They also have regular sales. I am not down with their Chicago Tool brand. Just call it Pearl River Tools or something. Don't dis Chicago. Many tools or parts for tools from name brands are made in China today. But those brands enforce quality standards on their factories. Harbor Freight is a mixed bag on quality standards which throw their tools into the Other category. They are cheap though. Harbor Freight is a view into China's manufacturing world too. In addition to useful tools, they sometimes have oddities like electric fly swatters, which have a multitude of attention getting disciplinary uses. I've always found the staff polite and they know which aisle things are on. But they are not there to give construction and project advice. What guy doesn't like tools, especially CHEAP tools! I have been shopping at Harbor Freight for a number of years. I used to go to a few different locations while I was living in Texas. Most people order from their online site. A buddy of mine didn't even realize there were locations by him in Texas. I'm sure he's since visited a store or two. I will admit that the quality of the power tools aren't going to be Black & Decker quality. But if you're the type of do-it-yourself at home kind of person that doesn't break out the tools every single day, then these will all do the job you want them to do. Another friend with buy several drills at one time, so when one dies, he just opens up another one. I have several tools from them and all have preformed admirably. I do love this place. My only problem, is that when I go in to Harbor Freight I always find one two many things I don't need, but manage to buy anyway. Geez, a machete for under $5, why not??? How many people can say they own a machete? I CAN!! Although it's sitting in a storage unit and I have no idea how I will ever use it.... oh well. It's still cool. So, in a nutshell, go here for inexpensive tools for around the house kind of stuff. Ordered the wrong generator at 2:00am. At 11:30am I realized the error and tried to cancel the order via a call to customer service directly. THERE IS A 3 HOUR WINDOW called REMORSE CANCELLATION. Once that window closes there is NO WAY to prevent product from shipping even though nothing has left their warehouse!! They get to keep my $500 and I have to wait to receive this generator only to request a return goods authorization and ship it back THEIR EXPENSE. I wonder if corporate realizes how much money they spend on shipping incorrect or cancelled orders? Time to revisit their internal processes. UTTERLY RIDICULOUS!!! read more

WOW!.. The worst customer service from the employees. Went in to purchase a lot of painting supplies, we were given a budget of $1400.00 dollars to spend between 3 house painting jobs in the North Portland area just off Williams. We went into Harbor and the chick (Talia) that works the front register would not even acknowledge our existence?... Even after saying HELLO to this "Human Statue" She literally rolled her eyes and never responded as we walked into the store. Apparently, she's really good at just standing there and just rolling her eyes at people and not making anyone feel welcome!... So if management is going to hire staff to greet their customers who walk through the door like this and NOT offer any assistance and that's the first impression that they want to give, then we will be more than happy to take our business elsewhere and WE DID!..... Don't waste your time or your money at this place, you'll just pad the pockets of rude register clerks to mistreat you and make you feel unwelcome!... You can't beat the rock bottom prices here! And every few weeks they have newspaper coupons for free items. Let's face, almost everyone likes getting FREE stuff :) Some of my free items have been pretty awesome: 6' x 7' tarps, LED flash lights, heavy duty kitchen shears/scissors, heavy duty measuring tape (my favorite freebie so far). This place is amazing. You get front row seats to the full range of nuts and bolts (I'm talking about the people who shop here, myself included!) from whack-a-doodle to space commanders. There are few very clear ways that we can support China. This is one that's easy. I buy tools, garden items, household items, electrical items, and sometimes hardware items from here. Many of the things are total crap and I always feel like a chump for thinking "Maybe this time it'll work better?" then again, there are a handful of really useful tools I've bought here that have been doing their jobs for years! The staff at this location, like the one in Gladstone, is pleasant. Sometimes they share a bit too much about their hardships but so do the folks at my local hardware store. I would suggest that you steer clear of things like: wall anchors some metal screws (they tend to be cast poorly and the heads are not centered) some plastic gardening items like water nozzles, statuary, etc. (they break, spring leaks, fade quickly, crack, and are likely NOT BPA-free) Check out Harbor Freight, give it a whirl! It's not Ace Hardware, my all-time fave, and very little you buy here is going to last very long. A friend bought a relatively inexpensive little trolley/cart sort of thing that she could pull around while doing yard work. The friend is pretty handy, so while I hung out, she put the cart together good and tight. Unfortunately, within a couple of weeks the cart started collapsing, and when the friend tried to put it back together, the screws stripped and then nothing could be done. She had to go back and buy another better quality cart at a higher price elsewhere which she admitted she should have bought in the first place. But it's pull of the bargain, which is what pulls you in here to buy. As an aside, everybody who worked there was friendly and helpful, and it's a pretty good location. It is fun to walk around and look at everything too. Just keep in mind you get what you pay for here. read more

Harbor Freight!! Woo hooo!!! I love the HF idea: go directly to China, India, etc., buy stuff from the factory, and have them put your name on it. Target customers who don't need heavy duty name brand status tools. Add in a sprinkling of other items (garden and patio, trailers, etc). Provide a no questions asked exchange policy and provide spare parts (from the headquarters) at reasonable prices. Send out flyers weekly and send out coupons regularly. A lot of these tools are homeowner / weekend mechanic quality (not a bad thing). Some of them are quite good. Typically, their tools are a better value than Sears, Home Depot, Fred Meyer. You'll find that you can buy an entire set of tools for what one or two of them would cost elsewhere. Want to work on you car or bike but don't have a lot of cash? This is where you want to come to tool up. Big sets of metric hand tools at great prices. Are you an art student and you need, say, an angle grinder for a sculpture that your working on? Yes, that $20 angle grinder, often on sale for $12.99, will really do the job. Is that $40 bench drill press any good? Yes, it works fine. Rent a tile saw for $50 a day? Heck no, buy the $55 on sale tile saw, cut them puppies up, and then sell it when you're done, or lend it to your friends. Their air tools are a great value and hold up pretty well. Those umbrellas for patio tables that are $80 at Fred Meyer? $6.99 at HF. Story: I bought an air compressor from them. I was wheeling it out to the back yard and ran it into a wall and broke the air filter off. Oops. Called them up to order a replacement, figuring it would be $10-20. Nope, it was $1.79, but because the compressor was still under warranty, they sent it for free. I tried to pay for it but they wouldn't take my money. Before Interstate got gentrified, HF was sitting there in an old Safeway store, and visited by some decidedly odd customers (is he really wearing leopard stretch pants? he's got to be 60 years old). It was always an adventure to go there. Staff tended to be weary and a tad burned out. So Interstate got upscaled and HF is still sitting in an old Safeway, and they did remodel the store just a bit and the staff is a lot happier than they used to be, they're actually friendly and helpful. Only down side: I always buy way more than I intend to ;-) read more

Harbor Freight rocks. Cheap tools that will do the job just fine when you're not planning to need to use them often. Don't get me wrong, they carry some decent quality stuff. However, the majority of their items are budget versions made in China or Taiwan- but don't think that's a bad thing. When you absolutely need a particular tool for a certain job but can't borrow or rent one, it's MUCH cheaper to get it at Harbor Freight than buy a professional grade tool that's just going to sit on the shelf. They have a little bit of everything, hand tools, power tools, air tools, automotive tools, garden tools, basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and welding tools and accessories. There is also a good selection of stuff like duct tape and glue, painting supplies, wiring terminals, etc. Service is fine and most items are well stocked, just plan to spend some time on your first trip here, as there is a LOT of stuff to look at... I usually end up finding 2 or 3 things I didn't come here for but will be useful nonetheless. read more

It's a great place to get tools of trade for DIY. The selection is very diverse and you'll find things you won't find at other consumer stores like pallet jacks, stand-alone engines, electric motors, specialized screw driver bits, etc. I would say its a mix of Home Depot, Farm tool store and Auto parts store. Recently this place adopted Best Buy culture. Certain items have a restocking fee. Customers checking out welders, air compressors and such are solicited about their "extended warranty plan". Return policy was better, but now they're more Best Buy like. Not that its a surprise but the long term durability is usually not well and many equipment and tools are not repairable down the road Great if you just need something that you don't need to last much longer than 90 days. read more

Pretty good assortment of specialty infrequent use tools. They were the only store in Portland to carry a 36" automotive pry bar which was essential for doing a Toyota truck suspension lift install. I wouldn't choose their tools for heavy use but are a great value for most diyers. read more

Trashy, immature staff refused to honor extended warranty purchased by customer. Illegal? Regardless, watch out for their extended warranty policy! While I was browsing near the checkout a man came in with a pump that he had purchased that had failed. He was courteous and said something along the lines of "hi, I purchased your extended warranty when I bought this pump and it failed today and I'd like a replacement" he is immediately told he is not allowed to bring the pump into the store and needs to take it back outside because it "may have had fuel in it" (?). The pump was clearly for water and he nicely explains it was only used for water. Cashier calls manager up and asks if she can give the man (who spent extra money on an extended warranty) a replacement pump. No. They quote corporate rules about him having to mail this pump somewhere etc etc. Guys is finally like "listen guys I purchased this warranty with the expectation I wouldn't have to mail in a 100lb pump and wait weeks for a replacement, my boat is sinking right now can you please work with me?" Nope. They refused and sent him out of the store. The guy held his cool much better than I would have and got on the phone to HFs corporate offices. I purchased my items and left before I could see the end resolution but will have a tough time returning after watching this interaction. Never have I seen a customer be so respectful to such an absurdly rude employee enforcing a horrific company policy. Bravo to that guy. read more

I bought a service cart on wheels for my ice cream business which I have had great use of? I use it for unloading ice cream from my S.U.V into my garage large freezer and some into the freezer in my ice cream Van! Having the use of this cart has saved me lots of time and is a great convenience not having to carry ice cream back and forth. Just load on the cart and roll it around. Very handy. Well here is the sad story! We bought another house this past July and moved to downsize. Unknown to me my well intentioned bride without my knowledge donated it with some other things to a thrift store here in Vancouver? I was not pleased when I discovered this had happened? Every purchased tool with an electric motor has never lasted more than 2-4 days. These are throw away one time use, I bought a "heavy duty 2 h.p." chop saw it wouldn't cut warm butter. My bad thing is I waited about 3 weeks to take it out and try it, it is useless. Same with their hand grinders pieces of garbage. Save your many add additional 30% over their price and buy a good tool that will last 10x longer then their junk. The only thing you should buy is gloves, screwdrivers, tape, odds and ends. read more

I was disappointed at the lack of customer service and selection of products. I was hoping to find a Black and Decker or higher quality cordless screwdriver, but only found a cheap $8 one. The cashier talked me out of it, so I asked where could I find a better one, and she pointed over there. I said I had been to that section of the store twice, and didn't see it. She kept saying, over there. No one was in line, so I would have appreciated her walking me over to where she was talking about, especially since she talked me out of buying what I was going to buy. Everything I have bought here has broken very quickly. Drill bits seem brittle and snap, pliers look like they were made by children in sweatshops, and punches bend and snap. You do get what you pay for, and the very helpful staff cannot make up for the poor quality tools. read more

Make sure that you shop carefully. Some things are pretty cheap and will fail often. If you are not a professional then the tools will probably last for a while. A good example is the sliding miter saws. They sell for about $120 and have a 90 day warranty. I have had 2 of them fail out of 3. One was under warranty and the other wasn't. I now have a Ryobi that I got at Home Depot for $179 and it has a 3 year warranty and it's just a much better saw. I could have gotten the additional warranty for $25 and that would have been a 5 year warranty. I would never recommend getting a Harbor Freight sliding miter saw. Many of their impact products are not hardened and made of cheap steel. Hammers, chisels, breaker bars all have failed or get dull real fast. They are pretty cheap but if one doesn't use them often then they will probably do the job. For something that is going to get a lot of use get a quality tool. Other products do okay and to get them elsewhere would be very expensive. I got a 7 inch grinder with a cupped concrete grinding wheel and the whole setup cost what just the grinding wheel would have cost elsewhere. I don't do a lot of concrete work so this worked just fine for me and I have had it for about 3 years. Never get any gasoline powered tools from Harbor Freight. Yes, they are cheap to buy but that being said, they are cheaply made and getting any kind of service will be costly. They also have a ridiculous 90 day warranty. Get a brand name power washer for the same money and get a 3 year warranty on the parts and a two year warranty on the engine FOR THE SAME PRICE as the Harbor Freight model. Just be careful. Not all products are cheaper than elsewhere and not all products are cost effective. Expect them to be cheap and fail under heavy use. Do your homework and you will do alright. read more

It's doesn't cost anything to be nice and neighborly. So when your neighbors ask you to please sweep up glass on the sidewalk in front of your store, it should be a non-issue. Bought a 10 gallon 2.5HP 125psi air compressor that runs great! Bought the generic Harbor Freight brand air compressor starter kit and it sucks balls. The only good items were the air coil and dual air chuck. The industrial quick connect plugs are designed to leak all your air out in less than 30 seconds. The air pressure gauge meter is made of cardboard and reads 50 psi when used on an empty bike tire. So buy your fittings from Fastenal or somewhere else. I repeat the air compressor that I got is extremely reliable and still gets from 0-125 in 2m:05s and puts out 90psi at free flow. read more

I like this store, the staff is always helpful and they are friendly. Their products are good enough especially for the price. Yes they are made in China probably, yes they are light weight and sometimes seemingly cheap..... but the tools mostly are good enough for the price.think about it like this, you'll get 80 to 100 percent of the job done but you're only spending 30 to 60 percent of what a more expensive tool would cost to do the same job. Lots of tool I have purchased through them over the years are still in use. Some tools are going to get destroyed or ruined anyway. I also like the variety of tools you can get at one store , that's a big time saver! Also some of their tools have evolved into really good tools that can compete with the best of the best but once again you get a great value. Plus they're real good about refunding or exchange if you have a problem ( which I've had to do from time to time) and have never had a bad experience. Anyway, I'm very satisfied with them and glad they are around as they have saved me several times in a pinch whereas the alternative was to spend an unreasonable amount of money for a tool I may only use once or twice .
