Proof that Oregon Wine Can Convert a BBQ-Loving Texan Y'all. I didn't think I'd say this, but here I am -- a brisket-fueled, bourbon-sippin', proud son of Texas -- absolutely swooning over wine. Not just any wine. We're talkin' about the handcrafted, small-lot, soul-swirlin' nectar served up at St. Innocent Winery -- a place so peaceful and picturesque, it made me question why I don't live in a vineyard-covered valley full-time. My wife and I rolled up to this Willamette Valley wonderland expecting a decent lunch and some light sipping. What we got was a full-blown sensory revival under a cherry-red canopy, surrounded by forested hills that looked like they were painted by God himself after three glasses of Pinot. We opted for the St. Innocent Story Flight -- five sips of vineyard-designated poetry. My wife, being the classy half of our duo, paired hers with the Sip & Savor Experience, which was essentially an edible sonnet: summer vegetable soup so smooth it could run for office, a goat cheese tart so tangy it made my eyebrows dance, a Thai-style spare rib that nearly caused me to curse in delight, and a chocolate mousse topped with pistachio and freeze-dried strawberry that straight-up healed childhood wounds. Me? I stayed true to my roots and ordered the BBQ sandwich. Because even in Pinot country, a Texan's gotta do what a Texan's gotta do. And y'all -- that sandwich slapped harder than a summer sunburn. Juicy, smoky, piled high, with a crunch of pickled slaw and a side of ridged chips that made me weep a little. Paired with that 2019 Momtazi Pinot Noir? I felt like I was sittin' in the arms of a wine-soaked angel. Our server was a gem -- part sommelier, part tour guide, part miracle worker. She suggested we tack on the 2020 Shea Vineyard Pinot and the 2023 'Not So Innocent' Grauburgunder (a rosé of Pinot Gris). Both were showstoppers. We left with a bottle of the Grauburgunder like it was a souvenir from heaven. And just when I thought the experience had peaked -- bam! A quick tour of the facility gave us a peek behind the curtain: barrels like art installations, a tasting room polished to a shine, and a staff that clearly loves what they do. St. Innocent Winery isn't just a tasting stop -- it's a full-body, full-soul, full-Texan-approved revelation. TL;DR: Come for the wine. Stay for the views. A more serious winery with an array of wines ... a beautiful view, and also some delish food options (we had the recommended burratta board it was YUM!) So we googled and saw this winery had excellent reviews and decided : why not? We are new to the Pinot scene..: and this winery did not disappoint. The tasting room is perched atop a hill with a beautiful lagoon view- we arrived around noon (but were not hungry, just peck-ish). We were seated immediately- and we chose a glass each. I saw they had a Riesling and that's always my choice. Later they gave me a couple other whites to taste, and their Chardonnay was also much to my liking. My partner ordered a 2019 Pinot noir freedom hill and thoroughly enjoyed it! He was also offered a couple other complimentary tastings that rounded up our wine experience here. Very relaxing, good wines and food..: we had fun here as well! I edited to add what a fantastic host experience we had at the end of our stay when they were so gracious to actually reccommend wineries around the valley- we are tourists passing thru and will be following some of the wineries they mentioned so graciously. We had a fantastic time visiting the vineyard - tasting menu, two different flights. Our server was very knowledgeable and charming. I chose the sip and taste, and the accompanying food was perfect. Little delightful bites. My husband had the tomato and mozzarella, which was amazing. The tomato was just amazing and the cheese just perfect. The vineyard itself is gorgeous, the only downside was the cloudy day. Would highly recommend. There are worse ways to spend a rainy afternoon. read more

Update to my November 2025 review: we received a very nice email from St. Innocent, offering to exchange the bottles of Pinot and refund the price difference. They also offered two free flights. We really appreciated the offer. Although we felt pretty awkward about going in to exchange wine and get a refund, the person who helped us was SO NICE and friendly and made us feel completely comfortable, it turned out to be a nice experience. The tasting room is large, open, and lovely, and every employee we've encountered there is very nice. I've loved their chardonnay for years and thought it would be a great place to visit, so am very glad we went back. read more

A nice stop after driving down to this Willamette AVA outside of Salem. This is a newish winery with their first estate harvest 2022. We had a nice tasting and noted that the host served all the wines in the flight at the same time with corresponding small food choices accompanying. It was well done. This allowed us to taste each wine at our own speed rather than working on another schedule. This was not the custom at other wineries. The host was informative and helpful with our many questions. Absolutely wonderful experience! St. Innocent is a smaller winery, but it definitely proved that bigger isn't always better. I visited with my cousin and his wife on a holiday weekend and we were able to be seated immediately. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful view and the beautiful weather. There were 3 different tasting flight options, 1 that was only wines, 1 that was paired with food bites, and 1 that was paired with a desert. There were a few food options, but mostly snack-types that would complement the food. Our sommelier, Brian, was absolutely amazing. He was very knowledgeable and very friendly. We were checked on by another staff member that explained the different cheeses and snacks on our charcuterie board, I wasn't able to get her name, but she was very knowledgeable as well. We had such a wonderful time that my cousin and his wife decided to join the wine club. It was a stark contrast from some of the other wineries in the area. The food bites were amazing, the wine was delicious, the Ambiance was great. All in all, a wonderful experience. I am looking forward to returning. read more

I came to do a wine tasting with my family. I was looking forward to it since I haven't been to St. Innocent since before the pandemic hit. The associate working was cold throughout the time we were there. He would come and pour and then promptly walk away without any discussion of the wine. We were literally the only people there. So I thought "okay maybe that's not his style." Then another group of four comes in and he is friendly and accommodating and chatty with them. We hear him explain each wine in detail and is generally much more personable. The only difference I could tell between ourselves and the other group was age (the other group was all late fifties or so versus our being a couple in our thirties with a child). Mind you our kiddo was well-behaved and occupied with the charcuterie board and a show we put on for her, so it was not a behavioral issue keeping him away. It was overall a really disappointing experience and not one I've come to expect from the wineries around Salem. read more

This is their new location, under construction but a beautiful location tucked in the trees off Enchanted Way. We were greeted & served by a friendly staff all afternoon. They shared with us history of the winery; information about the grapes, wine, location, soil, fossils found and so much more. My favorite part of the experience & the reason I will be back is their Sip & Savor. I was hooked by their 2016 Chardonnay paired with a chipotle soup. Delicious! We went home with a couple bottles & a plan to return soon. I highly recommend the Sip & Savor over your basic tasting. read more

Nice winery along the I-5. A bit strange since they do not grow their grapes on site but get theirs from different grapevines along the Willamette Valley. It sure looks like they are starting this town grapevine close to the tasting room. The wines were ok. Their Pinot noir choices were abundant and we liked some of them, certainly not cheap! Their Chardonnay was excellent, but again, for about $30 a bottle not a steal. The tasting fee is waved with the purchase of a bottle, and for $15 tasting flight that makes it ok. The friendly service and warm smiles, good patio seating without overcrowding (like next door at a Willamette Vineyard) makes this a nice choice for some relaxed sipping. read more

My hubby and I have been buying and drinking St. Innocent wines since the late 1990's. We find them to be reliably enjoyable and good price point for the quality. We visited tthe old tasting room several times when it was located in a sort of industrial park in Salem but had not been to the new tasting room at the Zenith Vineyard location until this past April. We made our second visit last week (late June). I share the above for context because I think it helps to know something about the reviewer when reviews are so disparate for a location. As they seem to be for St. Innocent. All is not perfect here, but there is more to like than not in our experience of two visits. TASTING SET UP About half a dozen pours in a $5 tasting fee flight. A very reasonable fee and the wines are always good to sample. A big drawback from our view is they will NOT allow a flight tasting to be shared. Since my hubby and I often travel with just the two of us to wineries and he is almost always the designated driver, we appreciate being able to share a tasting flight. Also, since I sometimes have no interest in this wine or that one as part of a flight (although he is always interested in them all), sharing is a good thing for us. But not possible here. We were with another couple this time and this no sharing policy really turned them off. On the plus side, the fee is refunded with purchase of only a single bottle. When so many valley wineries are moving to $10 or even $15 fees which are not refundable or require as much as six bottle purchase for refund, St. Innocent's policy here is "thumbs up". TASTING ROOM We like the new tasting room, although we agree with those who suggest the entire building is laid out in a way that does not necessarily invite you in. But once inside we think it is a pleasant place to be. There are also a few tables outside the tasting room to sit and enjoy wine or a picnic on nice days. On both visits the tasting room staff have been uber friendly and knowledgeable. They are enthusiastic about what the winemaker is doing and eager to share information and answer questions. They seem considerably more sophisticated in approach than many of the tasting room hosts at other wineries in this area, where the approaches are more warm perhaps. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing here, it is just a different styled thing. For accessibility planning, tasting room is level in from the parking lot (which has several spaces of accessible parking) and accessible throughout, including the loo. WINES Like many valley vintners, St. Innocent produces a plethora of Pinot Noir. That varietal made up four of the flight of six this last time and typically by the time I am at my third winery (which this one was on this day), I am "Pinot Noired out". I passed up sampling those, in particular since I've enjoyed a number of St. Innocent's good Pinot Noir over the years. My husband had the full flight and enjoyed them all but in particular the Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir. They were also pouring Pinot Blanc and I've always appreciated that St. Innocent was among the first to produce this underrepresented and great varietal in the Willamette Valley. It may no longer be the best Pinot Blanc produced in the valley (for my palate, Four Graces gets that nod) but it is still a good Alsatian style Pinot Blanc. This time the tasting flight started out with a new wine for them. A very light colored rose of Pinot Noir called Oeil de Perdrix ("Eye of the Peacock"). I wondered if folks involved in naming decisions might not want to have consumers too much think of Sebastiani's old standard White Zin named "Eye of the Swan" in the naming and that's why they put the name in French. :-) That said, and with the disclosure I am not a fan of rose in any form, this was a very acidic, citrusy wine that could be very interesting for summer sipping and it is a lovely color in the glass. SHHHH...DON'T TELL ANYONE THIS SECRET! :-) For those who, like us, grieved when winemaker Mark Vlossak decided to stop producing St. Innocent's wonderful vintage dated sparkling wine after the 1998 Demi-Sec Reserve was released in 2007, there may be reason to rejoice. We understand Mark has about fifteen cases (2006 vintage?) methode champenoise sparkler (Blanc de Blanc this time?) in the hand riddler with a release date forecast sometime as early as next year. read more

Picturesque, stunning, elegant and exclusive. Some of you probably can't wait to visit while others should steer clear. This winery in the Eola-Amity Hills close to Salem is a cross between a modern French chateau and upscale country club. In some ways, I found the extreme elegance a little off-putting. It is funny, because I am someone that doesn't mind a little glitz, but in this case, I found the environment too sterile. In fact, this location seemed more focused on weddings and less on the wines. While we were there several couples came to tour the property for their special day. The banquet room and grounds for a ceremony are très chic so I definitely see the appeal. The tasting room was scheduled to open at 11:00a, but the host didn't arrive until 11:20a. The selection of wines was impressive - 8 wines in the flight for $5, but the explanation was the most 'on script' of the places we visited on our wine tour. The wines are excellent and it is a beautiful place, but I guess I was just looking for a little more soul. read more

Excellent small winery with an charming view. We visited last Wednesday and had a delightful wine tasting experience. Our sommelier was attentive, personable and knowledgeable about the wines. A lot of superlatives, but well earned. We selected the Sip and Savor option--5 wines well-pAired with four small tastes, plus added a charcuterie board. We enjoyed the wines, food and the entire experience. We will definitely be back the next time we drive to the Portland area. Just a note: we were traveling, and just walked in. Our server said that they are really busy on weekends, so suggest reservations then. read more

A great little winery tucked away just off I 5 south of Salem and just past Willamette Valley Vineyards. Their wine is wonderful and they have a lovely setting looking south from the tasting room. As soon as we got off the plane, our first stop was to St. Innocent. As it was highly recommended by our local vendor in Raleigh. And he was not wrong. Truly great pinot noir. We picked up both the 2013 and 2014 Shea Vineyard Pinot simply because we could not decide which was the best. Note they have multiple tasting lists. We wish we picked the one with only Pinot, as we are not into white wine. But having said that, their whites were pretty tasty. But if you're into Pinot, make sure you select the correct tasting list. The winery is beautiful. As we were coming directly from the airport, we did not stay as long as we should. St Innocent was suggested to us by another winery, and not knowing enough about Willamette Valley wineries, we decided to take the suggestion. The wine was phenomenal, so many choices and so many vineyard designated Pinot Noir choices it was almost too much (but not really!). Alec was our host and he was entertaining, informative and happy to answer a multitude of questions about more than just the wine notes. Highly recommend! Came here with high expectations and was severely disappointed. Rick was not friendly at all when I asked about the history of the vineyards. Four of us ordered the sip and savor experience, and only one order of food came out. When we asked about the other 3 orders of food, we were told "mistakes happen" and nothing was offered to correct the error. Instead one person in our party had cold food. Would not recommend. I have been to this vineyard twice now and will not make the same mistake for a third visit. The first time I went with 3 friends to give a few of their reds they are known for a go. Their tasting room staff seemed very stuck up and like they could care less so we did not stay long. I did not bother to taste since if it were up to me we would have left pretty immediately. The second visit I did not realize my friend made a reservation for a tasting tour here because I did not recognize the name. When we pulled up I kept my mouth shut figuring that the last experience was an off day and that this time would be great since it was our third vineyard and we were having such a lovely day. When you step out of your car you are greeted by such a beautiful view. My friend let them know we were there and we were just a touch early. A woman came storming out and started asking my friend all these questions like she was being interrogated then proceeded to say that no one bothered to write down our reservation but she supposed they would accommodate us. She then made it VERY clear to us that we were going to have to pay our $5 tasting fees in advance and kept going on and on about it treating us like criminals. I hardly think a person who cannot afford a $5 tasting fee is going to afford the gas alone to drive through wine country for the day. It was ridiculous and three of us at this point were about ready to tell this woman off and leave. She makes sure to get the $5 from each one of us (honestly, several people did it with their credit cards just to be assholes because she was being that much of a hose beast). We were ushered, barely, down stairs and greeted by this amazing man who was the only saving grace at all seriously. If he was the only person I had encountered I would be giving this five stars because he really was the only person working at this place who is worth a damn. All of us learned a crazy amount about wine making and different types of wines. He was wonderful with his pours and his introductions to each of the wines. I will say in here as well that I really enjoyed quite a few wines we tried and some of our group did buy wines but several others of us refused because we were back to that woman. She brought us down a plate of breads and cheeses etc that one of the guys in our group purchased for everyone and acted nice for a few moments but wow, just wow... read more

Preface: I realized after reading the yelp reviews on St. Innocent and other Willamette Wineries how imperfect the Yelp star ratings are. When I go to a winery, it's for the wine and not the service, architecture, pours. But not everybody collects wine and definitely opinions vary on this subject, so here are my thoughts. Wine: 5 stars Location/architecture: 4 stars Pours: 4 stars Price: 5 stars Overall: 5 stars Of the 10 wineries we visited St. I was the only one that I became a club member. Their wine are an exquisite expression of Willamette Valley at a very reasonable price. There new tasting room was comfortable and very pretty, The pours were reasonable The helper was personable, but it is the wine that shines. Their Chardonnay (top level) was the best Oregon Chard I've had. Their pinots were exceptional from Shea to Temperance. They all showed ageability and grace. Definitely a burgundian style I liked Shea, but Temperance and Zenith were not far behind. Only complaint, the pourer did not know the new Southwest Airline regs on checking in wine at the terminal. Hey, mistakes happen and it didn't have a negative consequence. My warning, ship the wine home from the winery, don't carry wine on the plane and don't try to check it. This is a must winery for the wine lover. read more

My husband and I visited St. Innocent last summer and unfortunately, we experienced an unfriendly and unwelcoming experience. The server ignored us as he was occupied visiting and serving the only other couple in the room who also happened to be members. When the server confirmed we were not members, our service became worse. He basically told us that only members get a new glass to drink from when the wine tastes change from white to red wines. The server's snubness to us was so obvious even the couple who were members realized it and the woman whispered to me that the server is not known for friendliness. The wine was ok but our experience was worse, we will not be coming back. read more
