The service was wonderful the staff member helping us was so kind and welcoming. We tried the 2019 brut sparkling wine, and it was the perfect balance of crisp and slightly sweet. I usually shy away from sparkling wines because they can feel too heavy, but this one was light, delicate, and incredibly easy to enjoy. We also ordered the blue cheese-stuffed dates with almonds, and they were absolutely delicious! Rich, flavorful, and a perfect pairing with the wine. I do think I would have preferred the goat cheese version, but they were unfortunately out at the time. In fact, it seemed like quite a few items on the small menu were unavailable, which was a bit of a downside. Overall, Chemeketa Cellars is a charming spot with great wine, friendly service, and a unique story behind it. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Salem for a girls day!

This place has such a great atmosphere laid-back and welcoming while still feeling really nice. Every single staff member we've interacted with has been incredibly friendly, and it just has that kind of vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. There are several different places to settle in depending on your mood: inside the big open room where they have live music, outside under the trees at umbrella-covered tables, or on the patio near the wood-fired pizza oven. We've already caught a couple of really great bands here, and they have live music pretty regularly. The pizzas are delicious, the charcuterie boards are fantastic, and the wine is reasonably priced. We also really liked how their wine club works there's no membership fee, you just commit to purchasing wine twice a year. Easy decision for us since we already know we'll be back often! And then there's the vineyard itself. Being able to wander through the vines as the sun is setting is just gorgeous. Ankeny Vineyard has very quickly become one of our favorite places to spend an afternoon or evening. Good wine, good food, live music, beautiful surroundings, and genuinely kind people. I'll pick up a $6 from the grocery store and call it good. I go tasting every once in a while, but I don't get into the whole "notes of this" "nice nose" kinda stuff. But I will have the occasional $50-80 bottle as a treat. That being said, I got the first wine (I think it was a Pinot gris? Just a white wine) on the flight, looked at my friend (who's a winemaker) and said "this thing has notes of wet dog and sewage". She agreed. I couldn't drink it and it burned the back of my throat when I tried it. The second wine (rose) had notes of sulfur and also burned . It was easier to drink but not great. The Pinot noir was the best, I could actually drink it. Though I've had cheaper bottles that tasted better. It was very watery and didn't have much body to it. The Pinotage was very disappointing. It had too much salinity. I know that the winery was just bought out from the previous owner so they're probably just stuck with whatever he made. I'd like to come back in a couple of years to try some things that the new owners make! I didn't get to try their food, but it did look amazing. Again, service was great and very helpful, but the wine was just...not it.
