Parking - It was a bit difficult to find parking, but luckily we were able to get a spot right in front. Ambience - The vibe was cute with only a few tables available. Fortunately, there was just one table open and we got seated quickly. Our table had a horoscope book and a newspaper, which was interesting it's been a while since I've actually sat down and read a newspaper. I ordered an 8 oz latte with whole milk, and it was served in a glass. I believe many cafes are starting to move toward serving drinks in glasses rather than traditional cups or mugs. I'm honestly so disappointed. There were three of us. My friend ordered a drink, then it was my turn. I ordered two 16-oz iced drinks with oat milk and asked for one of them to have just a few ice cubes because I can't drink very cold drinks. Right after that, the lady basically stopped listening, and I didn't even get to finish my order. I figured I'd clarify with the person making the drinks and mentioned that I wanted a bit more oat milk in the second drink because my friend finds it too sweet. As soon as I said that, the cashier interrupted and told me my drinks were not made with oat milk. I said they were, and her exact response was: "Good thing you didn't pay for them." Excuse me? I told her I did pay--and I paid the same amount I always do for this exact drink at this location. Then we got the drinks. The one with less ice was literally half empty. I'm not exaggerating--maybe 10 oz at most, even though I ordered a 16 oz. So now I'm wondering: if you order an iced drink and ask for less ice, do you just get less product? Because that doesn't make sense. If you order hot matcha you get 16 oz, but if you don't want hot and don't want ice in your drink you'll get half empty cup. Will not go back. Everyone who was with me was shocked how rude the woman was. First of all the barista was stellar and super helpful and friendly. They were patient with some of my questions and confirmed my order and milk alternative, which is also always nice too. The service alone would have made this spot 5 stars and highly recommend for me. The barista seemed to know many folks that came in and this spot truly felt like a neighborhood coffee shop that was a part of the community. The drinks were also excellent though. Well made and unique but still tasty flavors. The menu had strong fall vibes but honestly I kinda prefer those types of cozy drinks to the bright or fresh "spring" drinks. I hung out to do some work in the space and it seemed surprisingly open for a Thursday late afternoon. Love this place so much! The toasties sandwiches remind me of an Uncrustables PBJ sandwich. Even with just egg, it's elevated and so warm and toasty and comforting. They have a terrific mocha and squirrel spice latte. They use vegan and house-made chocolate in their mocha and hot chocolate. The added spice for the squirrel latte was such a perfect balance (I asked for half syrup). The barista and owner are super friendly. It's such a warm, welcoming establishment that clearly has regulars and a nice community vibe. Heads up, it's also a very dog friendly establishment. This is for my first visit to Squirrel Chops back on 7/18/21. I had stopped at another pastry shop in the CD and decided to check it out before heading to my next stop over in Phinney Ridge. Very popular indie cafe with the long line and clientele full of regulars. I remember my iced mocha truly hit the spot once I received it, well crafted. But it was a mad dash to my car left with the flashers on and running late to NW Seattle. When in Seattle, go to a hipster coffee shop. They invented it. If you're in the Central District, Squirrel Chops is a decent option. Here's what I loved and what I didn't love: Love: 1) Coffee: It's a good cup of coffee. I ordered a latte and it was creamy and perfect. 2) Neighborhood: It's in an up and coming part of town and it's cool! Lots of nearby great restaurants like Lotus Thai Cuisine. Not so much: 1) Service: The staff weren't friendly at all and very distracted. Maybe it was an off day, but it was awkward. 2) Atmosphere: It's an odd shop. Not too many seats and weirdly laid out. I've been coming to Squirrel Chops for the last year and this place has quickly become a neighborhood staple. The baristas are friendly and down to earth and they make good suggestions. I love getting the Sunrise Tacos breakfast burritos and a latte on weekday mornings. My neighbor said the weekend breakfast sandwiches are also excellent so that's next on my list.
