I requested a quote for gutter cleaning and interior/exterior windows in Fremont, which Cesar provided within 15 minutes. I decided to go with Squeegee Pros since he did my dad's home in Milpitas 2 years ago and because of his fair pricing. Cesar ran late the day of cleaning because he had to pick up a tool, and he let me know an hour before I expected him. It was no big deal for me since I had other work being done in my home so planned to be home all day. Upon arrival, Cesar confirmed that they would do the gutter cleaning and exterior windows. I asked him to please remove any spider webs around the gutters and windows, which he agreed. He also let me know that another person would be joining him in about an hour. There were 3 total working on my home and it took about 3 hours. They removed the screens and washed them down with the hose. Although they only cleaned the exterior windows, you could tell that they were squeaky clean. I am planning to have them return a second time to do the interior windows after the other work is completed. There was one screen that was falling apart. Cesar took it with him to fix and will bring it back when he returns in a few days. Cesar provided before and after pictures of our gutters. They scooped and bagged all the debris in the gutters, and flushed with water to make sure the downspouts were clear. It actually rained the next day and we saw water flowing consistently out of the street curb drains. Cesar recommended gutter guards for our downspouts to prevent future clogs. How does a guy like Cesar have a 5-star rating on Yelp, while also shaking people down with a bait-and-switch routine?  It's good you asked, let's explore the tactics of this very experienced hustler. I called Squeegee Pros for an estimate and had very little time for shopping around.  We were moving out of our rental and wanted to leave the windows nice and clean for our awesome landlord that had treated us so well for years.   I got Cesar on the phone and he quoted $480 for just the outside windows of a two story house of about 2700 sq ft.  That was super expensive for just the outside, and not including the insides of the windows or repairing screens or anything, but the guy had 5-stars on Yelp.  Surely this was going to be no-hassle way of moving forward.  But apparently Cesar had other ideas... So the guy hustles out the next day showing up around 5PM, he and a co-worker quickly clean the windows outside in about 1.5 hours.  As I walk out, I do the typical, "So how much do I owe you?"  Cesar replies, "$650".   Now I'm in sales and deal with a lot of personalities and I have a mind like a steel trap when it comes to figures.  I also prefer to deal generously with people, who typically walk away with a healthy tip and something to drink.  I was not happy to be ending this exchange with a dispute.     I reply, "You quoted me $480 over the phone." and I kid you not, Cesar does not miss a beat.  He launches into this pre-hatched spiel about how I must have confused him with someone else, "how many quotes did you get?", and how he's so sorry, and how this was a rushed job and they came out the next day, and he can't do an "after 4PM for $480" and comes with a helper, etc. Of course, none of this makes any sense because I didn't ask for a rush job, or after hours job, or two man job or anything.  But clearly it's Cesar's schtick to guilt people and make them feel uncomfortable.   I don't back down and clearly state he told me $480 over the phone.  Now, at this point I've given Cesar a choice.  The gig is up, does he come clean or continue with the con?  If he were better at the confidence game, he would have sized me up and realized, "this one is more trouble than it's worth", but he makes the wrong call, pegs me a "nice guy that's friendly enough" to be a good victim.  Tsk tsk, Cesar. The next phase is the compromise.  Cesar is counting on me feeling bad, and then launches into this, "well how about you pay me $570?"  Then reluctantly, "Okay, maybe I can accept $500, I just don't want you to be mad."  Translation: What is the highest amount you'll pay me without complaining about my unethical behavior on Yelp?  So I agree to pay him $550, I shouldn't have, but I wanted it to be clear that what was about to come next was not about the money, it was about the principle.   The final phase is the pillow talk after the, you know, violation.  He wants you to feel better about what just went down and says, looking at the house we live in, "Trust me, you'll make it back a lot faster than we can."   Translation: You're loaded, your stock portfolio just went up $2K, and here you are arguing with the window washer over $170.  This apparently works on a lot of people, it was very well rehearsed, and I must have been the 100th victim. So toward the end of this first episode I check out Yelp and, sure enough it looks like Cesar did the same with Jacob B. from Saratoga, CA, with similar numbers ($420 vs $650).  That night I drop him a 2-star rating which is the cliff-hanger before episode 2.   Episode 2: Nice Cesar is now gone, and he's been replaced by, "I'm going to bully you into taking down that review" Cesar.  I got 15 emails from Yelp saying Cesar had commented on this review as he feverishly raged and edited, edited and raged.  This spilled over into some PG-13 text messages and threats.  Sorry, bro, I don't do intimidation.  I drop him another star and even more rage ensues.  I felt the writers could have done a better job on episode 2. Conclusion: Get your quote from Cesar in writing.  He likes to keep it verbal for a reason. read more
