Look, the food is probably 4 stars but I'm bumping up to 5 because this is just one of those classic, greasy-spoon style, cash-only throwback joints that are hard to find these days. And the food is actually good! My advice: Pork souvlaki on a bun with "everything" -- i.e., tzatziki, lemon sauce, tomatoes and onions. Sure, you could add lettuce or extra tzatziki if that's your thing. My husband insists that the pork beats the chicken here, but I've also been known to enjoy the chicken souvlaki in a pita...with "everything," natch. Fries topped with gravy are also bomb! Greek salad is okay. They seem to use the same lettuce (diced) that they use as sandwich toppings so it's not as crunchy as I would like, but the dressing and cheese are nice. Well, here it is... a review of my favourite fast food joint in all of Canada, not just Toronto. Been coming here for several years now, despite the fact that I live in the west end of the city... any time I cross that Bloor Viaduct, Square Boy seems to reel me in. I'll go to the east end for one thing and end up saying to myself "well, now I'm here [meaning within a 5km radius!], might as well go to Square Boy". The staff are some of the most amazing individuals that I've ever had prepare a meal for me (if you know, you know!). Some truly great characters there, I love them all. The food is classic Greek street/takeout style, at least that's what I imagine it would be like. As my hero Gordon Ramsay would say, "the best menu is a simple one, done right". Square Boy does it right. I've been here dozens of times and never gone home disappointed. My personal favourite is the gyro on a pita, however the chicken souvlaki is pretty special too. They also do a pretty good burger. And the fries with gravy unleashes my inner Irishman and memories of gravy chips back in the UK. Prices are extremely reasonable, you'll never feel ripped off here. Do remember to take cash though as it's a cash only establishment. Square Boy seems to be enjoying a new, fresh audience these days, thanks to its increased social media presence -I think this is great! However, I'm secretly annoyed (not really) on the inside because I always thought that this amazing place was my own little secret. Square Boy has been around forever, probably since the seventies and it's established a loyal following for good reason. Solid Greek food, that's very reasonably priced. I normally get the chicken souvlaki dinner ($9.80 plus tax) which comes with either fries or onion rings (small surcharge for onion rings) and a Greek salad. They don't offer rice or potatoes. The chicken souvlaki had a nice char to it and it was pretty decent, wasn't amazing but pretty solid and very reasonably priced especially with how expensive eating out is in Toronto these days. The fries were pretty standard and the Greek salad was pretty fresh. The order took about 10-15 to make. Overall, Square Boy is a pretty solid choice for Greek food that's very reasonably priced. It's not gourmet Greek food but it's pretty solid and priced accordingly. There is good reason why it's been around forever and has established a loyal clientele. When you walk in you are reminded of the simpler times of the 90s from the dated interior and overhead menu in Square Boy. The menu is relatively limited but it has everything you need and want from a place like Square Boy. The prices of the items are also very much trapped in the 90s, as two hamburger combos + a milkshake was only $20. The milkshake was delicious, more on the thin side but very creamy and smooth still. I will be honest. When I have had the chance to eat anywhere, I choose Square Boy. Normally I get the burger with pretty much the works but when my friend and I went last summer after a concert she introduced me to the chicken souvlaki salad platter, OMG! So good too. But the burger is SO delicious that I rarely get a photo of it. You can see it in her right hand. We divided it in half and I ate it ASAP, totally forgetting to take a photo of it. My favourite working-class (and 1980s retro) takeout in the East End. Toronto has many dine-in and takeout establishments that are aspirationally priced or sadly poor quality food. Not here. Square Boy offers up tasty chicken souvlaki hot and fresh, and they make a mean bun with this and all the toppings. They use a very simple classic greasy spoon counter service approach, and the marinade seasonings are tasty. I would say maybe once out of every 40 visits I get something that's a little bit ratty and overclocked, or maybe slightly under-done rubbery meat (Never as bad as Astoria near Chester.) But for the convenience and modest price I really like this place. The portion & the eating is generally satisfying. There are good chunks of tomato and onion you would not find at any modern burger chain, = more 1980s retro appeal! Interior is basic, old and quite worn. Decor isn't a focus. This is not necessarily a diner or area you would want to linger on a weeknight, but this is part of my Toronto. And the Up-and-coming locals buying homes who also eat here seem to agree. read more
