Well I was hungry for gyros and didn't want to drive to Chicago. I've seen this place before but never ate here. Especially when going to selling plasma for blood in the evening. No time to cook for my dinner after I left. In regards to the food the salad was fresh and healthy. Gyros was okay good. I ordered the dinner because I was that hungry. What I didn't like was when they put the fries on top of the pita bread and I want to eat the pita bread in the gyros. Service was fast and friendly. This is more of a hole in the wall ambience but sometimes hole in the wall places serve good food and I took a chance. According to Yelp this was four stars. I see they also have Broasted chicken which I'll probably come back but I was already eating chicken for lunch and didn't want chicken again and I haven't had Gyros for a long time. That's why the three stars because I didn't like how they stacked French fries on top of pita bread and gyros. They gave more fries than they did of gyros meat which made the plate look so big. French Fries was just ok. They were the thin cut ones not the steak fries that I usually serve with Gyros. I also ordered chocolate cake for dessert and a fountain drink. The Chocolate cake was delicious too. Similar to Portillo Chocolate cake on the frosting or icing and cake texture. Not too dry and flaky. Will come back for either the New York strip steak dinner or there are famous roasted chicken but I'd like to try to stick dinner for $25 since it's a hole in the wall and that's some bougie steak restaurant. read more

Squabs Gyros is one of those go to places for a good hot lunch. I have eaten here so many times, either on my own for at events where they ordered food from there to serve. Souvlaki Plate (pork) and the half chicken chicken dinner are the two meals I get the most because they are just so good! The meat for both dinners is tender and moist, with those amazing Greek seasoning and that touch of grill flavor. I love that they come with the salad, rice pilaf and garlic bread. I usually don't do the garlic bread and opt instead for an order of the Greek potatoes, which is way better than garlic bread. When I know I am going to order from them or someone will be serving food from this location, I make sure to bring in my own Greek yogurt sauce (yogurt, cumin, lemon juice, Tajin, salt and pepper ) to mix with the rice and potatoes. Gyros are very nice as well, I usually get that for The Doctor and The Queen. I do like it as well, but I am hooked on that pork and chicken for now. Can't speak on any other food from there as the two dinners are all I never order and eat, but I highly recommend those. read more

Second visit on a Friday afternoon and tried a "Grecian Specialty" souvlaki plate. Had great expectations based on my first visit. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed. The three thin souvlaki skewers were cooked well but extremely over salted and lacked any lemon, olive oil or oregano flavor. "Grecian Specialty" No tzatziki sauce, no pita bread, you have to order the sandwich for those items. Also, The salad lacked the feta and olives that were on the last plate?? guess they have different salads for different plates. they give you garlic bread and a dinner salad not a Greek salad, you also get rice pilaf. Squabs was a great choice. The choices were so hard to make because everything looked so good and fresh . I went with the chicken breast over rice with the salad. Delicious. My boss had the gyro plate which looked really good as well. They were friendly and quick. I was craving their potatoes so we stopped in and due to a miscommunication (I tried to order a big enough plate to share with David but he never told me that he hates the chicken here-- he's crazy, it's great) I quickly found myself staring at a grumpy husband. I had ordered the half chicken with just potatoes in the hopes of getting double potatoes and no other accompaniment... but I wound up with chicken that David was convinced was undercooked and a couple of potatoes that he wolfed down. I asked him to go up to the counter and ask if we could pay an up charge and get the bread and salad that would've come with the platter. He went up and George gave it to him without charge or interrogation. "What do you need?" "Tell my daughter what you need." Since David finally came clean that he likes the gyros and the broasted chicken but not the baked chicken, we won't have the miscommunication next time-- and there will be a next time because places like this deserve my business. The chicken was moist with crispy skin and (despite the fact that I ate it as quickly as a dog trying to hide a transgression) really tasty. As always. The dining area is large for a counter service place and the air quality is good. They've even got a slot lounge (completely separate from the dining floor. You'll spend a little bit more (1/2 chicken platter was 17 and change) but don't tell me that you love the USA and then tell me that you aren't willing to support local businesses. Was working in the area and stopped here for lunch and glad say that I did. Ordered a gyro sandwich and the meat was succulent, tender and fresh. One of the best gyros I've had have to say. On the SW corner of Mannheim and Fullerton, this was quite the busy place. A nice, Greek joint vibe with great gyros. Plenty of tables but, they seem to have a big carry-out clientele as well. We had practically perfect timing arriving at 11:10am. My co-worker got the Gyros Sandwich with fries and I ordered the big Gyros Plate (see photo) for $19.84. But, when the cook brought out two, full pans of beautifully, broasted chicken halves (it musta been several dozen!), it made us wish we'd ordered the Greek Chicken. Our other friend with us had the Combo Plate: Two Chicken Kabobs, Gyros with tsaziki, olives and feta on the side. The food came out pretty darn quick, though. The food in this place is great. They have a sign outside that says "the best roasted chicken in chicago. Their chicken tastes good. I believe they have some special recipe coz its really good. This is a casual restaurant frequented by many locals. One would order from the counter and then find a table to seat. Looking just at the prepared foods around the counter one could tell that it is a very busy restaurant; not only for dining room patrons but also the amount of takeout orders. So, it was not a surprise that after we ordered and sat down, it took a long time for our foods to come out. In fact, we thought that they forgot our order and had to ask at the counter. In addition, we had to clean the table before we could sit down. As for the food, we ordered a kebab plate and a gyros plate. The aroma of the meats from the kitchen really filled the restaurant. Both our plates were above our expectations. I don't think anyone visiting this restaurant will go home hungry. They piled up the meats like they have endless supply. I love coming to Squabs for lunch. The food is extremely tasty and the service is friendly. The dinner plates are big enough to take half of your order Togo and eat later. My favorite plate is the chicken breast dinner or the chicken kabob which are always marinated/seasoned to perfection. The menu has a lot of variety so there's something for everyone. Unfortunately they serve their plates with plastic utensils so cutting up the food is sometimes a bit of a chore. read more

My coworkers and I were in town from Detroit and were told that this was the place to come for lunch. Even with the great choices, we all ordered the gyro sandwiches. They were huge, delicious and huge. I have had some of the best gyros in Detroit and this is way up there. The chicken, ribs and souvlaki all looked delicious and plentiful on plates that were purchased by other lucky patrons. And the woman at the counter was a show by herself. I've been coming to Squabs for some time now, yet I'm. It really quite sure why I haven't reviewed this place. I usually just come here for their gyros and their Greek potatoes. Squabs makes their Gyros right! It's really hard not to, but there are other places who can't seem to get it right. A lot of good tasting meats m, some tomato and raw onions (not grilled) (that's just nasty), tzatziki sauce all packed on a warm pita. Definitely very filling and worth the price. I also usually always get an order of their Greek potatoes, thought the last time I ordered them, they were extremely salty. I have traveled around the Chicagoland area and have had the opportunity to travel outside of the Chicagoland area but could never find a more authentic Greek cuisine. The service is immaculate from the moment you order, the time you receive your plate, and finally walking out the door. The atmosphere is built for a family oriented lunch or dinner style and the employees make you feel right at home. The owners have done a great job of running such an environment of professional hospitality and I highly encourage any of you in the Chicagoland area to cater for any event. I was here today for the first time. I had the gyro and it was the BEST gyro I've ever had. The meat was very flavorful and actually a bit juicy. There was a lot of it, too. I ordered extra tzatziki sauce and was glad I did. It was also extremely good. I ate some of the meat with a fork and dipped it in the cup of sauce. I will definitely go back. You know I really hate writing negative reviews especially since I have been coming to Squabs for some time. It's usually a solid choice for good food. It's not the best or worst choice out there, but is usually pretty consistent. The last few times I have come here, it's just not been a good experience. I order the same thing basically every time, the chicken breast plate. When I came in for lunch on 09/04/19 , I did notice that the place was busy. I ordered my food and went to wait for it to be called. Literally as I was standing there, my food was handed out to me. I actually stood there for a quick second and asked how it came out so fast. That meal is usually made to order. I think as the girl at register why there were green peppers in my rice. I am not the biggest fan of those. She replied who knows and I should eat them. I'm thinking... hmmm maybe it's just busy. I sat down at a dirty table and took a look at my chicken. Under cooked , wilted lettuce, rice on chicken. Just an odd look to it. Food was luke warm at best. I may try this place one more time, but this last visit wasn't the best. read more

My husband wanted greek chicken and we have none close to our house. He remembered this place from many years ago - not the name, just the general area of where it was. So we get on the road for this great chicken I heard so much about. Well...the chicken was good! He got the greek and broasted chicken (to go). Keep in mind the broasted chicken takes approx 15 mins. I had the gyro plate. He allowed me to sneak a few tastes. I should've gotten the chicken. Both types were very well seasoned and juicy so no complaints there! The gyro was okay, I have had better taziki (sp) sauce and the meat had some dry pieces mixed in with the juicy. The salad is simple which I like with a nice balance of oil and vinegar. I had ordered the fries well done. I got them almost cremated but they were still edible. Next time, I know not to ask for that! I will agree that the chicken was worth the drive but better if you are already on that side of town! read more

You get lots of food here. I ordered the gyro's dinner: rice, 1 pita, mini salad and like 6 lbs of shaved gyro meat. So if you're a doomsday prepper, just order the dinner plate and I'm sure you can ration it to last a few decades. The reason for the 3 stars is the quality portion then. It's not bad, it just wasn't on par with some of the other Greek restaurants in the area, like Yorkies. I feel like it was just a lot of salty meat. The first few bites were great, but by the 4th and 5th bite, it really caught up to me. I also like it when they grill the meat for a quick char after carving it off the rotating spit.
