I went in at 5:35PM and cook told me they were closed and I kindly asked if I could get an Oreo shake quickly made. He went to go ask the lady but she refused and rudely said they close at 5:45PM and she could not make an Oreo shake. Despite sharing how there's still time to make the shake since they are not closed yet, she continued to refuse and instead wanted to continue talking to a customer. This is a 50s-style diner, with counter service and a few tables. The burgers were tasty - similar to Steak & Shake, so you'll need a double. A NEW BEGINNING Seasons change, leases expire, and the updated digs of this greasy spoon in Melrose Park are worthy of a +1 star bump. At some point in mid-2018, Harlo Grill closed their original location at North & 25th Ave, where they'd been for decades. Apparently the lease was up (though I'm convinced the health code violations may have stacked to the point where the owners just said "f*ck it, this place is falling apart, burn this bitch to the ground.") They moved the classic marquee sign and re-opened half a block east in an area formerly occupied by the mysterious Club Harlo. Whereas the old spot was dilapidated, poorly lit, and had limited counter seating, the cushy new venue is bright, spacious, and respectably clean. I'm very happy to report that the menu remains the same, as do the crazy low food prices. It seems as though most of the employees carried over, too. The guy working the griddle whipped up my Hobo skillet ($6.10) in a jiffy. It had plenty of potatoes & onions, topped with two eggs perfectly sunny side. I added jalapeno peppers for good measure; every order comes with buttered toast and jelly. Harlo's burgers are decent but the breakfast items are standouts. You can get 2 eggs with bacon and hash browns for as little as $5! That's insane. Oh, and their selection of liquid condiments is tough to beat (Cholula, Tabasco, sriracha, plus a few others). They've got you covered, my hot sauce loving friend. * TL;DR * Going from a total dive (whose hygienic practices were questionable at best and at worst, alarming) to a bigger, brighter space has made a world of difference. The sanitation score is still a far cry from many other places, however, but maybe a teensy bit of raw bacon germs aren't the worst thing for our immune systems, y'know? I was worried that a shift in scenery would also dictate a change in menu, but fortunately that's not the case. All your favorites are still as available as ever, 24/7, 365, from now until the end of time. As always, they are **cash only**. This place is amazing!! A former student told me about it! Yes a 7th grader lol.. he told me you gotta go they cook the food right in front of you! Omg the cheese was melting everywhere! Guess what he didn't lie!!! I went late one night with my son after our Christmas flight was cancelled sadly ..12/24 we went in sad, Depressed , and hungry . I actually ate here yesterday and food was good but I think the servers need to be more accommodating granted I get it it's like a local spot. And also not sure if the guy and the kid lived there or something but when your just trying to enjoy food and someone kept playing on the side almost hitting your plate, after a 12hrs shift it just disturbed my peace while I enjoy my meal. I tried a hamburger with fries. I gotta say, it definitely satisfied my late-night grease cravings. Everything is made fresh, right in front of you. The employees do a great job making sure that you have everything you need from time to time. In addition to the regular dining area, there is a full bar area, with billiards and music. Likewise, there is a small area for video gaming if you want to gamble. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the atmosphere. It was very sterile and colorless. I had been in here once before when we got food here for a school event, and the husband ate at the old location, but we just never made it. This is a nice place - good, solid diner choices with some unusual things, but I was happy that they had a full menu available all day because the kids decided they wanted pizza puffs at 8:30 in the morning! I hate lowering a review but its a must. I would love to give this place 5 stars cause honestly- Food here is amazing - one of the best burgers in chicago for a great price. Whats my issue then? Sanitary and covid precautions. Came in over the weekend and the wait staff was not wearing masks. I get its hot- but having brought my gf for a quick bite and she has preexisting conditions- we were disturbed that the server who was assisting in not just taking our order but making our shakes had it off her face the entire time. Simple things like this make me wonder is she washing her hands? I get this is a historical local spot... but its something so simple to get right. Sadly wont come back till covid is less impactful. Frustrating as it is - cant recommend it based on this . Owner should talk to weekend staff to make sure things are steps are taken to get it right. Your typical diner is small, and congested, and Harlo Grill has a much more open and spacious feel to it. I had two eggs scrambled with American cheese, bacon, wheat toast, and sliced tomatoes instead of hashbrowns. My daughter had a cheeseburger with Bacon, lettuce and fries on the side. This place is far from fancy but it is frickin' awesome because it's good food and cheaper than most fast food! We made a late night run to Menards after working out and I was sporting my workout attire and the smell to go along with it. That said, I was in no way up for a true sit down meal so we decided to check out this place and we were blown away by the entire experience. When we first arrived, there were literally two others there and one guy behind the counter. Within the thirty minutes we were there, the place had a crowd of at least twelve. All the while, the cook/cashier/server was moving non stop and that was amazing to watch. He grilled, prepared malts and took orders and did so fluidly. We ordered a bacon double cheeseburger and a Mexican Omelette. Both were delicious. The omelette was served with hash browns which were perfectly crispy and some of the best we have had in a while. There were free refills on the soda and the condiments are right in front so you have little to ask for once you're drive your order. We have many times sought a late night option and found ourselves scrambling to identify a place that was not far away from the nest. It was simple diner food done well. While that not sound like much it's one of my favorite things and few do it well. Hash browns were perfect. The eggs were perfect. The bacon could have gone a couple more minutes but was still delicious. The coffee was diner coffee. Not great but drinkable. I would like to have had a real coffee mug and glass for the water but they were both served in styrofoam. The other issue is they are cash only and I had to use their ATM which charged another $2.50. I also just realized I forgot to tip. Sorry to the server. She did I fine job. I've heard so many great things about this place, so we decided to check it out. After reading reviews, I opted for a double cheeseburger, fries and a shake. We waited almost 45 minutes for our food. The waitress was kind enough to take our shakes off of the check (without being asked, and without us complaining about how long we waited), which was nice. The burger was pretty gross. There was a lot of grizzle happening, and not a lot of flavor. Honestly a double cheeseburger from McDonald's has more flavor. Overall, I was unimpressed.
