Ignore the menu on the website, it's more limited in practice. The day I was there the only options were: steak, salmon, and bbq ribs. The only dessert was chocolate cake. There was also a salad bar. Overall, the food was adequate and tasty enough, though the salad bar was basically grocery store quality. Pork ribs were tender and appropriately sauced, fries were hot. Cake was pleasantly moist. Given the extremely remote surroundings, hard to imagine much better.

We also met Greg, one of the family members of the lodge, I can't say enough about the great hospitality of all the staff here. If you are looking to get away from it all this is the place. Anybody considering staying at Tal Wi-Wi needs to understand a critical fact: the entire lodge and…read morerestaurant was purchased by a wonderful and caring family in 2024 and a new grand opening was held in 2025. So any reviews prior to 2025 are null and void. What a difference a private owner makes! First, the setting of this lodge is out of some mountain fantasy dreamscape. It is just 2 miles north of the quaint and patriotic town of Alpine, which is like stepping into a world that no longer exists. The lodge is nestled in the ponderosa pines and aspen stands of the White Mountains, and sits along 3 small lakes. It is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, under the clearest blue sky you've seen in years. The only "noise" here was the sound of the wind in the trees. It is a literally perfect location. The family that runs the place is amazing. The word "amazing" has been overused to the point that it means little. But "amazing" is an apt adjective. They truly care and go far beyond the norm to please their guests. One of the areas where they have concentrated is the restaurant. They reopened "Shadows" Restaurant- on the property- after previous corporate owners had neglected it and run it into the ground. And the new place is different in every way. It's beautiful inside, with cedar-plank walls, timber ceilings, and an outdoor patio with an awe-inspiring view. And then there's the food. The new owners went all out on the food. They created a unique restaurant in Alpine. First, they don't use seed oils. Everything is cooked in beef tallow. If you've never had a French fry cooked in tallow, you've missed out on one of life's delights. Second, their beef is from a local (no, really) ranch. It is the best beef we've had in years. We ordered the ribeye and it easily surpassed even the $100 ribeye at Fleming's or Maestro's. The freshness and flavor was off the charts. The small-but-varied menu hits all the high notes: an unbelievable burger (made with their own blend of prime cuts) served on their homemade hamburger bun and served with those darned tallow fries. The pizzas are equally good, with a perfect homemade crust- no frozen restaurant pizza doughs here. Then there is the homemade pies (see a trend here?). The pies are some of the best we've had in years. And if that's not enough, one of the owners bakes fresh donuts fried in tallow, on weekend mornings. They're to die for. The restaurant is worth the drive alone. It's that good. The cabins are, frankly, rustic but in the process of renovation. The charm, though, is immeasurable. The rooms are romantic and rustic with some treasures (like the authentic 1950s wood-and-leather salon chairs). These days we lament days gone by and the romance of earlier eras. Tal Wi Wi preserves every ounce. Stay and feel what it was like in the classic "lodge era" of the 50s and 60s when western-themed lodges ruled the west. The owners are in the slow process of renovating all 20 rooms, but the beds are super comfortable and the views of the tall pines and mountains are unmatched. You don't come here to just sit in the room. And last we have the service. These kind people truly care. Emily- one of the owners- does everything she can to make each guest feel valued and cared for. She is the heart of this lodge, and her cheerful presence gives Tal Wi Wi a unique character. The entire staff is helpful, smiling, and kind. The restaurant is open Thursday-Sat right now though that may change so call ahead. And it only serves dinner (for now). Rooms are clean (though dated as I mentioned), beds are really good, water pressure is good, and the rooms have wall heaters which are quite effective. The draw here is the mind-blowing beauty of the White Mountains and the peace, serenity, and beauty found here. I've made a living as a writer for various airline and travel magazines, so I've seen it all. This place is a living dream for these wonderful Owners. It is clearly a labor of love. So come and experience the fruits of their labor, and of the unending vistas of the White Mountains around Alpine, Arizona. Oh and did I mention that the drinking water here (from true mountain springs where the lodge is located) is the best water I've ever tasted? And yes, water has taste. Come experience this gem from a forgotten era. The drive from Phoenix or Tucson is well worth it for this genuinely best-kept secret.

I understand rustic, but the rooms were 1960's crap. It was laid out nicely with a great grassy area for the kids, and a nice bbq for people to use. I thought it looked very inviting from the outside. When I got in the room, it had a mildew odor, was very warm (no AC in the motel) and SMALL! Smaller than low cost NYC rooms. My room had a double bed, and that barely fit, so I got in bed from the foot of it. The TV worked, and the place had electricity, and a bed to sleep on, though it was such a cheap squeaky mattress. Another thing I hated was the size of the toilet seat, I found it barely usable. The pros I guess would be the price, kids play area, and cleanliness... hey, you can polish a turd, but it is still a turd. A tip, they really push this restaurant called the Blue Wallow Cafe down the street, avoid it. I didn't go to Alpine looking for a culinary experience, but damn that food was awful. Next time I will try Tel Wi Wi as it gets pretty decent reviews.

They are the retired parents of the owner and began managing the lodge a month ago. The lobby itself was very charming and rustic looking just as we had hoped. It was festively decorated with the Christmas theme and the natural log looking banisters and the cozy blazing fireplace set the tone for the weekend with our first step into the lobby. Our bedroom was huge, and everything was sparkling clean. We had a king bed and the bed frame itself was also made of natural looking wood logs. It also had a huge picture window to watch the snow falling outside. We did not get a room with a fireplace but there are several available. The lodge has a couple outside decks for entertaining when the weather is nice, and it gives a great view of the valley below and the mountains in the distance. My wife and I spent a wonderful evening lounging in the lobby and playing cards in front of the fireplace. The next morning, we woke up to a complimentary breakfast prepared by Diana and Mike that included eggs, potatoes, waffles, sausage, coffee, OJ and more. Diana even topped it off with a homemade muffin for my wife's birthday. It was a perfect weekend!!!

I can honestly say, we won't book here again, NOR will we recommend to anyone who plans on visiting this great little village. We don't mind paying the 'holiday premium' when the place we pay for 'delivers'. Unfortunately, this place did not. It's as if one checks in here and the managers or owners ? , check out after fully billing you upon check in. We checked in and were told the wifi would need to be reset as it was 'slow' when a lot of people try to connect. How many people are truly in Greer? We get it; we are in the mountains and it wasn't truly a big deal. It never worked. NOT even a little. Again, not a big deal. Our room was upstairs: upon entering it leaves a LOT to be desired. The carpet needs a good cleaning , in fact, much of the room does. The water in the sink constantly shot air while using and had low pressure. The toilet does the same with the air thing and you must hold the handle down when flushing. That can be alarming in the middle of the night. The sheets on one bed were stained and I thought about calling down to request new ones , OH! But there is no phone in the room. That makes the , ' In Room Dining Menu' a little confusing too, now doesn't it? There was a nice wad of chewed up gum to welcome my husband on his side of the bed on the headboard. My daughters bed had a terribly stained blanket, but with a hot, stuffy room, there would be no need for that. There are no drapes on the windows and the blinds are in need of revamping, so guess what.. sleep will end about 0600am. That's also the time when a flock of parent-less children will apparently be allowed to run up and down the halls and stairs of the lodge screaming and hitting the walls. There is no air conditioner either. The room was super warm when we got into it , so we opened the two windows; one in the bedroom area and one in the bathroom. I get it, it's the mountains, it was downright miserable without ac. It was uncomfortable and stuffy even in the middle of the night when it cooled off outside, this room just never ventilated well. We were up and out of the room by 0945a the next morning to hike and explore the area in Greer. The 'free breakfast' was no where to be found. No coffee was found either. We only saw the mess of it all in the breakfast room. even a toasted bagel on the floor. The complimentary bottled waters were all gone; the fruit that was mentioned was too, and only the same empty plate in the bottled water refrigerator remained from the night before, AND the water dispenser was also empty. There was NO one to be found and the girl that checked us in the day prior had told us 'IF we needed anything, that they lived on property and just let them know'. You just could never find them! We came back that evening and our room had not been cleaned or made up. No clean towels & no trash emptied. My husband said he had seen maids on his way to find the 'mystery breakfast and coffee' , so he knows they were cleaning other guests rooms. We had no DO NOT DISTURB sign on door either. We would understand if this was a cabin as we have stayed in those before and they don't always have daily service.. well, as I was reading thru the small flyer in the room, you have to place the SERVICE sign on door NLT 1000am for your room to be cleaned. That would have been nice to have been mentioned at check in. I've never seen anything like that, and I travel a lot. The place in general has so much potential. It's actually a lovely looking log cabin looking lodge. The area surrounding the lodge is beautiful, but seriously, no one seems to care. The rooms here look more like a road side motel with a price tag of 'we can gouge you and we will' than the rustic lodge cabin you enter. People would leave messes out on the decks and on the common tables in the living areas downstairs and no one seemed to care about cleaning up after that. We also were amused that we came in about 2145pm on our last night after dinner and the girl who checked us in was finally 'on property' as we were coming up the stairs to our room to literally raise her eyebrows at us rather than say hello or welcome us or anything. NOT a word! We were not sure what that was about. Very 'boarding house, den mother' attitude of her though and I was personally not amused . This is a lodge.. treat it and your guests as such. Let's discuss the hotvtub that had that awful smell of mildew as soon as it was opened.. no thanks. Maybe this is why there were rooms here available and not at the cute, MUCH, cheaper, nicer cabins our friends had. Word to all.. ( we knew this already!), plan ahead for this area and avoid this place unless you don't think sleep is important! I need a shower after a stay here. Two stars for the view & rickety deck

With the nearest grocery store about 20 miles away, their little store stocks a little of everything including, eggs, dairy, canned goods, fishing supplies, beer and liquor, tobacco products, and the ever-important fishing supplies. This is a great place to buy a fishing license, local souvenirs, and ice. Another important service they offer is two large dumpsters-- many of the area recreation sites do not have trash service, meaning you must "haul in and haul out." The Lazy Trout offers trash disposal at two dollars a bag. Well worth the expense, unless you want your refuse riding with you for the duration of your trip. Other services they offer are a quaint motel, stand-alone cabins, and private fishing. Private fishing is something I never thought I would take advantage of, however, fishing alone with my three-year-old, it proved to be a wonderful and worthwhile experience. Lazy Trout private fishing consists of three good sized man-made ponds that are well stocked with wish. You can catch-and-release (fly fish) for half or all day rates, or you can catch and keep fish (spin reel and bait fishing), and pay by the caught pound. The ponds and grounds are beautiful and serene. I was able to park fairly close to where we were fishing, which made life easier with a three-year-old in tow. She caught her first three fish in her life, which is a great memory associated with Greer and the Lazy Trout. Not only is the bait fishing good here, the fish are HUGE! After we caught the first three, I knew this was more fish than we could eat in a week (3 fish were 5 lbs!), so I bent the barbs down on the hooks so we could easily release any future catches. It was a wonderful experience, and well worth the money. The Lazy Trout does everything right, including being friendly and full of local fishing information. Above all, offering ice and trash service gets me in the store, and I always end up buying things there that keep me from going to town for days at a time. I love it!

Upon arrival to Casa Azul we were greeted by the owner Kat in the lovely, patio area who welcomed us in to her place. Our room was lovely and quite comfortable ~ a nice queen bed with exceptional bedding, a sitting area and en suite bathroom (commode, sink and small shower. Everything is nicely decorated and inviting. Guests should know that there is no TV in the room but at Casa Azul, you don't really need it. There is a common area with large couches too ~ again, didn't see a TV in there. We actually watched a Netflix movie on the phone while we lounged in bed - great wifi service! Restful night of sleep and then Kat served up a fantastic, tasty breakfast before he hit the road. All in all, a very good experience. NOW.....you want the REAL experience? The dirty details? Well, let me give it to you straight. This is no ordinary B&B. This was like staying at a friend's home. I've never experienced anything like it and I loved it! I think each individual's experience is going to depend on what you're looking for and how comfortable you are with yourself and carrying on conversation with others. Was I somehow transported to my mom's house? Sister's? Cousin's? Best friend's? Because THAT is exactly how it felt! We played with her two little Chihuahuas who were adorable and friendly, met her horses and watched her feed them, scratched her kitty's ears, spent the evening hanging out in the large patio talking with Kat & her husband Marcial. My husband grilled meat and tortillas alongside her, I cut onion and limes in her kitchen and washed my dishes/cutting board in her sink while she made salad alongside me. The four of us sat in the patio - separate tables to keep our "social distance" and enjoyed a delicious carne asada taco dinner. **I should explain - Casa Azul does NOT serve dinner. There was nowhere for us to get dinner during this odd time in our world (COVID-19) but we did pick up some raw meat/tortillas at a grocery store in Springerville and hoped we could grill it once we arrived. Kat actually had a packaged, marinated carne asada that she needed to use so she suggested we use hers and take ours home. So we all ate dinner together outside under the stars in the wide open countryside. (The next morning we made sure to leave our raw, marinated meat with Kat to put in her freezer for later use.) We spent the evening talking and learning more about Marcial, where he grew up, how the two of them met... we talked fishing, food, old stomping grounds, Germany, etc. A few glasses of wine later and it was time for bed. The next morning we sat at the dining room table with Kat & Marcial and had a rousing, good conversation. I only wish hugging was still acceptable because those two deserved a big hug before we left. I highly recommend Casa Azul ~ you will love it!
