The beds did their job, the shower did its job, and the little coffee maker didn't fail us. Loved the chairs out front, which made it wonderful to sit out in the evening and talk with others and watch the hummingbirds do their magic. Reservations were made back in February for a room; an adjustment was made in March to add a second room, and no issues for our stop the first week of August '24. If you don't enjoy this place you shouldn't be on the road in this part of the country. The local eatery, the Grill & Still, served a decent meal and is an easy walk from the Lodge. Not a lot of choices for food as it looked like the town fell on hard times, but the Sportsman's Lodge was absolutely the highlight of our journey through AZ (besides AZ 191 heading south to Morenci, a motorcyclist's bucket list ride).

So any reviews prior to 2025 are null and void. What a difference a private owner makes! First, the setting of this lodge is out of some mountain fantasy dreamscape. It is just 2 miles north of the quaint and patriotic town of Alpine, which is like stepping into a world that no longer exists. The lodge is nestled in the ponderosa pines and aspen stands of the White Mountains, and sits along 3 small lakes. It is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, under the clearest blue sky you've seen in years. The only "noise" here was the sound of the wind in the trees. It is a literally perfect location. The family that runs the place is amazing. The word "amazing" has been overused to the point that it means little. But "amazing" is an apt adjective. They truly care and go far beyond the norm to please their guests. One of the areas where they have concentrated is the restaurant. They reopened "Shadows" Restaurant- on the property- after previous corporate owners had neglected it and run it into the ground. And the new place is different in every way. It's beautiful inside, with cedar-plank walls, timber ceilings, and an outdoor patio with an awe-inspiring view. And then there's the food. The new owners went all out on the food. They created a unique restaurant in Alpine. First, they don't use seed oils. Everything is cooked in beef tallow. If you've never had a French fry cooked in tallow, you've missed out on one of life's delights. Second, their beef is from a local (no, really) ranch. It is the best beef we've had in years. We ordered the ribeye and it easily surpassed even the $100 ribeye at Fleming's or Maestro's. The freshness and flavor was off the charts. The small-but-varied menu hits all the high notes: an unbelievable burger (made with their own blend of prime cuts) served on their homemade hamburger bun and served with those darned tallow fries. The pizzas are equally good, with a perfect homemade crust- no frozen restaurant pizza doughs here. Then there is the homemade pies (see a trend here?). The pies are some of the best we've had in years. And if that's not enough, one of the owners bakes fresh donuts fried in tallow, on weekend mornings. They're to die for. The restaurant is worth the drive alone. It's that good. The cabins are, frankly, rustic but in the process of renovation. The charm, though, is immeasurable. The rooms are romantic and rustic with some treasures (like the authentic 1950s wood-and-leather salon chairs). These days we lament days gone by and the romance of earlier eras. Tal Wi Wi preserves every ounce. Stay and feel what it was like in the classic "lodge era" of the 50s and 60s when western-themed lodges ruled the west. The owners are in the slow process of renovating all 20 rooms, but the beds are super comfortable and the views of the tall pines and mountains are unmatched. You don't come here to just sit in the room. And last we have the service. These kind people truly care. Emily- one of the owners- does everything she can to make each guest feel valued and cared for. She is the heart of this lodge, and her cheerful presence gives Tal Wi Wi a unique character. The entire staff is helpful, smiling, and kind. The restaurant is open Thursday-Sat right now though that may change so call ahead. And it only serves dinner (for now). Rooms are clean (though dated as I mentioned), beds are really good, water pressure is good, and the rooms have wall heaters which are quite effective. The draw here is the mind-blowing beauty of the White Mountains and the peace, serenity, and beauty found here. I've made a living as a writer for various airline and travel magazines, so I've seen it all. This place is a living dream for these wonderful Owners. It is clearly a labor of love. So come and experience the fruits of their labor, and of the unending vistas of the White Mountains around Alpine, Arizona. Oh and did I mention that the drinking water here (from true mountain springs where the lodge is located) is the best water I've ever tasted? And yes, water has taste. The room was clean the first night. The major problem was that after the first night, my room was only cleaned twice the whole time I was there. I had to call the office to get towels brought to me ( the manager did that). Another time is had to call the office and have someone come and change the sheets as the bed had been made with sheets that were not clean ( bowel accident due to bad food). I feel that there should have been some adjustment to my bill because of all of this being brought to managements attention, however that did not to happen.

She and her family joined us, along with our son and family for a total of 10 people. Set in a lovely location among the Ponderosa pines, with the Little Colorado burbling right outside our door. We were ecstatic until we went inside. The 2 story cabin was huge and roomy but it was filthy. Had they forgotten to clean it? I don't think so. It showed no upkeep for a very long time. The main, huge industrial size refrigerator in the kitchen stopped working the day after we arrived, and we had to put all our food in a much smaller refrigerator in the hall. Calls to Cabin Butler went unanswered. The dishwasher didn't clean at all. After some sleuthing, I discovered the dishwasher pods were hard as a rock and wouldn't dissolve at all. We bought new ones and it solved the issue. The stove's left front burner wasn't working at all. However, the biggest issue for me was there were no smoke alarms or CO2 detectors anywhere, despite this: Arizona law (A.R.S. 36-1637) says: Working smoke detectors must be properly maintained and installed in all residential rental properties, including every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every floor. Airbnb policy (this was an Airbnb) states that smoke alarms must be tested and functional. The other major concern was the clothes dryer was not vented to the outside. There was a large amount of lint in the back of the dryer and washer, and about 1 to 2" of lint in the dryer lint trap. Venting a standard clothes dryer indoors creates a severe, immediate fire hazard. Arizona mandates via the International Residential Code that vented clothes dryers be exhausted to the outside through adopted building and mechanical codes. I documented that with photos. Other issues: we couldn't lock the front door, there were no cleaning supplies whatsoever so we had no way to clean up after cooking and eating. No oven mitts, no utility knives or chef's knives. Inside of cupboards and drawers were filthy. Many light bulbs burned out. My daughter contacted Airbnb for a refund, but they said since they were not contacted until the day before we left they could only issue a refund of $18, a FRACTION of the rental. We had contacted Cabin Butler first as we were instructed to do if there was a problem, but never heard back. So it seems that our only recourse is to send reviews to appropriate sites to warn people, although I may contact Arizona's Apache County Planning and Zoning/Building Safety department.

It was dirty as evidenced by the state of my feet bottoms and the difference in patterns at one point on the floor. Did something happen there?!!! The fire alarm had no battery. The shower head looked as though it was thick with Ebola. The breakfast...or lack there of...was the another of the disappointments. It was served from 6-9am and at 7:10am, there was no meat, no bagels, no coffee. We did have a choice of dried out eggs that had been on the warmer too long and cereal with milk that wasn't exactly cold. The one saving grace was the bed. It "appeared" to be clean and was relatively comfortable. And the location was near the place I was there to visit. If you go to Springerville, be sure to grab breakfast at Booga Reds and take a trip through the western store near door to this dump. Also, don't be fooled by the name change. It's being run as Howard Johnson by Wyndham. Which is why we chose it. A could of names we know and trusted! Both of the namesakes should be embarrassed and ashamed. So much for trusting a name.....

To put the cherry on top of things there is so much BLACK MOLD!! Even my coworkers pillows has black mold on them!!! To add on to things my toilet wasn't even connected to the ground. The fridge is just rotting and smelling the whole room up. Half the time your door doesn't shut. Whatever you do stay far away from this hotel.

We spent the night in cabin #4 and found it very much to our liking, with all of the amenities you could ask for, and then some. The decor was really cute and the furnishings were very comfortable. Best mattress ever! The next morning coffee on the little little porch was very nice. We drove around a bit and took in the sites while escaping the heat of the valley. We saw a ton of deer, elk and other wildlife. The area is beautiful and the Escudilla Mountain Cabins are the perfect base for exploration. Next time we'll stay longer!
