    Bikers headed onto the highway

What a lovely place! Isolated yet easy to access. We wanted a place where we could do a safe-feeling mini vacation during the pandemic. A rustic cabin with its own kitchen was perfect. We only had to wear masks when we were in vicinity of the lodge to ask questions or to pick up the Wi-Fi signal. We stayed in cabin 10, Riley, one that fits 3-4 people and is situated nearest the highway (which was quiet during our October stay). The kitchen has various pots, pans, utensils, plates, cups, even salt and pepper shakers. There were paper towels and a small Dawn bottle, too. There is a full size fridge, oven, and microwave. A gas grill and a BBQ mini grill were just outside. For heat, our room has a fireplace (wood and kindling is supplied) and gas heater in the living room, and a plug-in radiator in the bedroom; I'm a cold weather wimp after years in the Phoenix area, but I was perfectly comfortable in our room on the 35-40 degree nights. Don't expect hot water from the shower, though. The main bedroom has a queen-size bed with layers of blankets. The living room futon can fold out, and there is bedding supplied for it; that worked out well for our teenage son. There was also another fold-out bed that we didn't need to use. One thing I must note is that there's a dearth of electrical outlets. If your family brings a lot of tech that needs to recharge, you would be wise to bring one or two plug splitters. This was not a big deal for us, we just took turns using outlets. I had to giggle about using my hair dryer (brought from home) while standing over the unplugged stove. Again, this place is isolated. We planned our meals and hauled in food, though there is a restaurant on site that is open for specific periods through the day. We never ate there. The nearest town for other victuals is Alpine, some 20 miles north, and it's a dot in the road. There are hiking trails right around the grounds. We did the Aker Lake Trail, a solid 3 hour trek of about 8 miles to and from the cabin. At night, there is some light pollution from the other buildings around the lodge, but the view of the sky is still spectacular compared to the Phoenix area.

This is a lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is truly out on its own, right off the little-used highway. They were short-staffed when we went, but we were there before their busy season would begin. All the employees chipped in to help in whatever capacity needed. We stayed in Cabin 10, which could've fit 7, but we used it with two couples. There was a full kitchen, which was nice for cooking some of our own meals. They had the basics for dishes, pots and pans, misc kitchen items. It would've been nice to have a set of steak knives. We made do with the one halfway sharp knife that was there. Regulating the temperature with a pellet stove, wood stove, and electric heaters was a challenge. Either we were cold or very hot. By the time we left, we had figured out what worked best to be comfortable. The beds and pillows were fine. There was a nice porch out front, with a gas grill they brought over. Something that we all felt needed to be improved was the stairs on both sides of the porch. They were cement block steps, with many big pieces missing, plus no handrails. That was a big safety issue. A few other things in the cabin could use some updating and sprucing up. We ate at the restaurant one evening. They had 3-4 choices for meals. Two of us had salmon and two had fried cod. The meal came with a lovely salad, a cup of the soup of the day, warm bread, french fries, and the fish. All of that was tasty, and for a very reasonable price. We were there a little early in the year, but were happy there wasn't feet of snow still around. The snow was still on the backroads, so it prevented us from driving all around and doing much hiking. We would be happy to return again.

We loved Hannagan Meadow Lodge! This is a special little jewel tucked away into the forest. We loved the remote location and that the electronic devices weren't able to get signal unless we made the conscious decision to go to the lodge and log on. The staff is amazing. The dogs are enormous and friendly. The horses whickered at us and we loved it. This is absolutely a rustic location, but it is absolutely a fantastic memory and precious place!

Hannagan Meadow Lodge My husband and I recently stayed two nights in the Josh Cabin at the Hannagan Meadow Lodge. We ate our meals in the Lodge. We enjoyed our stay. The lodge was established in 1926. Hotel rooms are available in the lodge itself on the second floor. We wanted a cabin. The lodge's restaurant had a limited menu, but the food was excellent. Charlie is a truly great cook. We ate all our meals there. They have a refrigerator offering bottled beer and other beverages. They do not have a full bar. Our cabin was comfortable and spacious but rustic. We had a covered front porch with 2-3 chairs and a table. We enjoyed sitting outside even during the rain. The cabin has 4 different options for creating heat: a pellet stove in the great room, a propane-fueled heater in the great room, and an electric heater in the master bedroom (which we never tried to use), and a wood-burning fireplace in the great room (which we did not use). The heaters in the great room do not come with any directions on how to use them. My husband is a very handy person, but he could not start the pellet stove or the propane heater. Finally he went to the front desk and asked for help. Charlie came over and started the propane heater and the pellet stove. The propane heater is easy to use once you know how. However, Charlie used a butane torch to start the pellet stove. My husband had been trying to use a 9 inch long household Scripto lighter (which we brought from home), but our lighter could not create enough flame to start the pellets. The kitchen came supplied plates, silverware, pots and pans, microwave, stove, large sink, etc. We used the large refrigerator (with large freezer) to store our beverages and a couple food items. We did not leave out any food items to tempt critters. The cabin was very clean and we never saw any critters. However, the morning we left there was a flashing red light on the electronic mouse catcher by the kitchen garbage can, so there was probably a dead mouse inside. There is no cell service at Hannagan Meadow Lodge, because it is out in the boondocks. The only WIFI is at the lodge, and it worked fine. We had no TV in our cabin and that was fine. There is a TV in the lobby of the lodge. The lodge can give you directions on where to drive to high points on the road to get cell The nearby forest is very lush and dense. There are ferns and aspen trees, not common plants in Arizona. The forest is moister and higher than most other Arizona locations, so the vegetation is special. Before our trip we bought a map of the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest at REI in Flagstaff. We wanted to know where the roads and trails were. We passed through Alpine on the way to Hannagan Meadow. We stopped at the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest ranger station to pick up hiking maps. They gave us some maps and trail descriptions. The staff said that the rangers had not been able to keep up with clearing fallen trees etc on most of the trails. The staff said that Acker Lake Trail would be clear. We took a short hike on the Acker Lake Trail. The dirt path was about two feet wide. The forest was very dense. We saw aspen, ferns and a lot of flowers. It was pretty. Each night at dinner we saw deer at the edge of the meadow across the street from the Hannagan Meadow Lodge. The lodge is located high in the mountains. One overlook you do not want to miss is Blue Vista. It is located at milepost 225. The lodge is at milepost 231.7 (according to Charlie). Blue Vista offers a view to mountain tops and high points miles away. There are two signs that depict the profiles of the mountains and provide their names. You can see Mt. Graham, which is about 100 miles away as the crow flies. The drive to Hannagan Meadow from the north is fairly easy. Buy any food you want in Springerville, where there is a big grocery store. The drive from Hannagan Meadows going south on Highway 191 to Clifton and Morenci is not easy. The elevation drop is over 5000 feet. The Hannagan Meadow Lodge is a unique comfortable spot in a remote location. It does not offer all the conveniences of a major tourist resort in a city or town. I believe they have a gas pump, but I would fuel up your vehicle before driving there. There is no store. Just the lodge and a nearby campground. Horseback riding was available when we were there. The horses head south to Chandler after Labor Day. There is probably cross country skiing in the winter. Charlie and Cathy, the hosts at Hannagan Meadow were fun to talk with and very helpful. One of them told us that the Josh Cabin is their most popular cabin. It might be the smallest. I think a lot of the other cabins are suitable for larger groups.

    Welcome.

Hannagan Meadow is this lodge. This lodge is Hannagan Meadow. Don't arrive expecting to find a nearby town called Hannagan Meadow - the lodge, its cabins, and its "general store" is all that exists. At over 9,000 feet above sea level (give or take), the alpine pit stop known as Hannagan Meadow is a tiny treasure in Arizona's White Mountains. Though over the years the property has gotten arguably a little rougher around its edges, it is still a perfectly charming, out-of-the-way spot to consider when the possibility of a quick weekend away presents itself. It is after all, no more than a three-four hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson. The cabins themselves rent by the night, and the main lodge serves breakfast and dinner daily. Gas, supplies, gifts, snacks, grab-and-go lunches, etc., are available at the General Store, adjacent to the lodge. The entire area is thick with tall, mature aspens and pine varieties. Depending on the time of year you may visit, wildlife may also be in abundance (especially in the evenings). There are many varied dirt trails meandering deep into the forest and hills, perfect for walking, hiking, mountain biking, etc. There are also several small meadows scattered throughout the vast, immediate alpine area, which often double as grazing grounds for local livestock. The gist is simple: don't plan on doing a lot. Particularly if you don't hunt or fish for sport, or consider hiking the most exciting thing on earth (I fall into this category). It's relaxing, never crowded, the weather is always beautiful (sometimes chilly, depending on time of year; winter is usually very cold), and the people who work at and operate the lodge and its surrounding property are incredibly sincere, personable, salt-of-the-earth types who love nothing more than to strike up a chat, and learn more about your own story. The cabin's interiors are heavy on the antiques and rustic - everything. Cabins come with small, basic kitchenettes and wood-burning fireplaces. Cell phone reception is nonexistent, and though electricity exists, not many things run on it. There are no clocks, phones or televisions in the cabins. If you must make a phone call, there is a pay phone in the lodge. Basically, if you stay there long enough, you will feel detached. In my opinion however, that can be a good thing. Sometimes such a detachment is needed. If you prefer a more pampered getaway, then maybe an overnight stay isn't for you, as Hannagan Meadow also makes for a interesting day trip as well. It's worth a visit nonetheless.

I understand rustic, but the rooms were 1960's crap. It was laid out nicely with a great grassy area for the kids, and a nice bbq for people to use. I thought it looked very inviting from the outside. When I got in the room, it had a mildew odor, was very warm (no AC in the motel) and SMALL! Smaller than low cost NYC rooms. My room had a double bed, and that barely fit, so I got in bed from the foot of it. The TV worked, and the place had electricity, and a bed to sleep on, though it was such a cheap squeaky mattress. Another thing I hated was the size of the toilet seat, I found it barely usable. The pros I guess would be the price, kids play area, and cleanliness... hey, you can polish a turd, but it is still a turd. A tip, they really push this restaurant called the Blue Wallow Cafe down the street, avoid it. I didn't go to Alpine looking for a culinary experience, but damn that food was awful. Next time I will try Tel Wi Wi as it gets pretty decent reviews.

They are the retired parents of the owner and began managing the lodge a month ago. The lobby itself was very charming and rustic looking just as we had hoped. It was festively decorated with the Christmas theme and the natural log looking banisters and the cozy blazing fireplace set the tone for the weekend with our first step into the lobby. Our bedroom was huge, and everything was sparkling clean. We had a king bed and the bed frame itself was also made of natural looking wood logs. It also had a huge picture window to watch the snow falling outside. We did not get a room with a fireplace but there are several available. The lodge has a couple outside decks for entertaining when the weather is nice, and it gives a great view of the valley below and the mountains in the distance. My wife and I spent a wonderful evening lounging in the lobby and playing cards in front of the fireplace. I can honestly say, we won't book here again, NOR will we recommend to anyone who plans on visiting this great little village. We don't mind paying the 'holiday premium' when the place we pay for 'delivers'. Unfortunately, this place did not. It's as if one checks in here and the managers or owners ? , check out after fully billing you upon check in. We checked in and were told the wifi would need to be reset as it was 'slow' when a lot of people try to connect. How many people are truly in Greer? We get it; we are in the mountains and it wasn't truly a big deal. It never worked. NOT even a little. Again, not a big deal. Our room was upstairs: upon entering it leaves a LOT to be desired. The carpet needs a good cleaning , in fact, much of the room does. The water in the sink constantly shot air while using and had low pressure. The toilet does the same with the air thing and you must hold the handle down when flushing. That can be alarming in the middle of the night. The sheets on one bed were stained and I thought about calling down to request new ones , OH! But there is no phone in the room. That makes the , ' In Room Dining Menu' a little confusing too, now doesn't it? There was a nice wad of chewed up gum to welcome my husband on his side of the bed on the headboard. My daughters bed had a terribly stained blanket, but with a hot, stuffy room, there would be no need for that. There are no drapes on the windows and the blinds are in need of revamping, so guess what.. sleep will end about 0600am. That's also the time when a flock of parent-less children will apparently be allowed to run up and down the halls and stairs of the lodge screaming and hitting the walls. There is no air conditioner either. The room was super warm when we got into it , so we opened the two windows; one in the bedroom area and one in the bathroom. I get it, it's the mountains, it was downright miserable without ac. It was uncomfortable and stuffy even in the middle of the night when it cooled off outside, this room just never ventilated well. We were up and out of the room by 0945a the next morning to hike and explore the area in Greer. The 'free breakfast' was no where to be found. No coffee was found either. We only saw the mess of it all in the breakfast room. even a toasted bagel on the floor. The complimentary bottled waters were all gone; the fruit that was mentioned was too, and only the same empty plate in the bottled water refrigerator remained from the night before, AND the water dispenser was also empty. There was NO one to be found and the girl that checked us in the day prior had told us 'IF we needed anything, that they lived on property and just let them know'. You just could never find them! We came back that evening and our room had not been cleaned or made up. No clean towels & no trash emptied. My husband said he had seen maids on his way to find the 'mystery breakfast and coffee' , so he knows they were cleaning other guests rooms. We had no DO NOT DISTURB sign on door either. We would understand if this was a cabin as we have stayed in those before and they don't always have daily service.. well, as I was reading thru the small flyer in the room, you have to place the SERVICE sign on door NLT 1000am for your room to be cleaned. That would have been nice to have been mentioned at check in. I've never seen anything like that, and I travel a lot. The place in general has so much potential. It's actually a lovely looking log cabin looking lodge. The area surrounding the lodge is beautiful, but seriously, no one seems to care. The rooms here look more like a road side motel with a price tag of 'we can gouge you and we will' than the rustic lodge cabin you enter. People would leave messes out on the decks and on the common tables in the living areas downstairs and no one seemed to care about cleaning up after that. We also were amused that we came in about 2145pm on our last night after dinner and the girl who checked us in was finally 'on property' as we were coming up the stairs to our room to literally raise her eyebrows at us rather than say hello or welcome us or anything. NOT a word! We were not sure what that was about. Very 'boarding house, den mother' attitude of her though and I was personally not amused . This is a lodge.. treat it and your guests as such. Let's discuss the hotvtub that had that awful smell of mildew as soon as it was opened.. no thanks. Maybe this is why there were rooms here available and not at the cute, MUCH, cheaper, nicer cabins our friends had. Word to all.. ( we knew this already!), plan ahead for this area and avoid this place unless you don't think sleep is important! I need a shower after a stay here. Two stars for the view & rickety deck

There is a common area with large couches too ~ again, didn't see a TV in there. We actually watched a Netflix movie on the phone while we lounged in bed - great wifi service! Restful night of sleep and then Kat served up a fantastic, tasty breakfast before he hit the road. All in all, a very good experience. NOW.....you want the REAL experience? The dirty details? Well, let me give it to you straight. This is no ordinary B&B. This was like staying at a friend's home. I've never experienced anything like it and I loved it! I think each individual's experience is going to depend on what you're looking for and how comfortable you are with yourself and carrying on conversation with others. Was I somehow transported to my mom's house? Sister's? Cousin's? Best friend's? Because THAT is exactly how it felt! We played with her two little Chihuahuas who were adorable and friendly, met her horses and watched her feed them, scratched her kitty's ears, spent the evening hanging out in the large patio talking with Kat & her husband Marcial. My husband grilled meat and tortillas alongside her, I cut onion and limes in her kitchen and washed my dishes/cutting board in her sink while she made salad alongside me. The four of us sat in the patio - separate tables to keep our "social distance" and enjoyed a delicious carne asada taco dinner. **I should explain - Casa Azul does NOT serve dinner. There was nowhere for us to get dinner during this odd time in our world (COVID-19) but we did pick up some raw meat/tortillas at a grocery store in Springerville and hoped we could grill it once we arrived. Kat actually had a packaged, marinated carne asada that she needed to use so she suggested we use hers and take ours home. So we all ate dinner together outside under the stars in the wide open countryside. (The next morning we made sure to leave our raw, marinated meat with Kat to put in her freezer for later use.) We spent the evening talking and learning more about Marcial, where he grew up, how the two of them met... we talked fishing, food, old stomping grounds, Germany, etc. A few glasses of wine later and it was time for bed. The next morning we sat at the dining room table with Kat & Marcial and had a rousing, good conversation. I only wish hugging was still acceptable because those two deserved a big hug before we left. I highly recommend Casa Azul ~ you will love it!

The common areas of the Chalet and Bunkhouse also had a seating area with board games, and a TV with DVD player and DVDs, and a kitchenette w/ fridge and microwave for making coffee/tea and heating food. The owners of Aspen Lodge could not have been more kind and accommodating. They got about a dozen or more of us in for horseback riding while we were there. The horseback riding trail was beautiful and fun. I highly recommend staying at Aspen Lodge, especially if you are a big group and want to stay together and get lots of quality time. The rooms had a lot of charm and character with very sweet unique decor & art in each. The accommodations are not fancy or luxurious. The room felt much more like staying in a family's house than a hotel (i.e., the bed, linens, towels were not fancy, but they were clean, the bed was a bit worn in - probably not amazing for someone with a really sensitive back). All that said, you and your family will have a fantastic time here!

The horse were spectacular and perfect for new riders. We arrived at the site and they had prepared a wonderful lunch and had a table and white linen overlooking the beautiful forest. A fire was made and we enjoyed our new friends. If there was a rating higher I would give it! A perfect and memorable experience and my new wife is already talking about another trip there next year.
