It's fusiony in a very Berkeley fashion (e.g. vegetarian Bibimbap is organic and contains almonds), and it's homey but in a way that's more bland than secret-family-recipe-tasty. I had the bibimbap with mung bean cakes--it was alright and had ample veggies to my liking, but requires copious amounts of gochujang. Friend got the BBQ pork which came in a photogenic skillet. 3.0 Stars I've been eying on this place for the longest time! So I really really really wanted to love this place! It's one of the few places in the East Bay that serve Korean porridge. However, I was fairly disappointed with the food, but the service was excellent !! Parking was limited, so we parked at Berkeley Bowl.. Shhhh..... I don't know how authentic Korean porridge tastes like, but I'll find out in a month and half when I'm in Seoul. Anyways, the porridge was too thick and lumpy. On top of it, the porridge was lukewarm so the waiter reheated it for us, which tasted ok. The banchan was yummy, especially the spicy tofu ones. We also ordered the spicy ramen, which was not worth $7.. It tasted like the Korean kimchi ramen I have at home for $1. Anyways, less than half the food was consume when we received the bill. SO FREAKING DELICIOUS. I had been craving kimbap for WEEKS - thank god my roomie and I finally ended up here at Spoon! I never quite appreciated the simple luxury of living near a Korean supermarket in my childhood until I had been kimbap-deprived for a solid 6 months. I ordered the mushroom porridge (as recommended by the waiter) and beef kimbap. The porridge was a first for me - seemed to be more of a traditional Korean dish, and was comfortably filling without being too heavy. It came with some sort of spicy sauce atop. This combo with some kimchi thrown in (probably not how you're supposed to eat it?) was absolutely mouthwatering - I finished the whole bowl, even after demolishing the impressive array of banchan (all delicious, by the way.) It was simple but delicately flavored - clear signs that there is one hell of a cook in that korean kitchen. The kimbap was a tad dry, but still tasty, although I personally am not a huge fan of having sprouts in my kimbap. Nevertheless, it satisfied my kimbap dreams. Besides the extraordinary food, what really charmed me about this place was the simple, humble vibe. There were cute signs about treating your neighbors well or something of that similar cliche line, and the helpful cheery waiters added to that comfy neighborhood feel of the place. It felt more traditional, more homey....and thus in my opinion a better, more authentic choice than Spoon's hipper (and according to my roomie slightly more expensive) sister restaurant, Bowl'd in Albany. Cheap and casual! They had a lot of outdoor seating and a large menu. I would say this is a good place for quick meal with a friend. It definitely has a "younger" vibe to it. I drive passed this place all the time and see an A-frame sign they leave out front that says they serve breakfast all day. We went there for dinner, but I was curious so I asked for the "breakfast menu" as well. I'm such a dunce - I was expecting waffles and pancakes. Nope. It's a traditional Korean breakfast menu that is the same as their dinner menu, except for the addition of a couple items that play up the eggs, such as the veggie omelet. The spicy pork rice plate came with a nice little egg soufflé appetizer. It was brought out in an extremely hot iron bowl and was boiling away for a couple minutes - very hot. The banchan - those are all the little bowls of sides that they bring out at Korean places - were excellent. They brought out a zillion of them. When they do that I always feel sorry for the dish washer - this banchan thing must make his job miserable. My favorite banchan was the kimchee broccoli - never seen that one before, but it was tasty. VALUE: Get the Kimchee Fried Rice Burrito ----- only $6.99. And its a big burrito. Very filling. I liked how everything they brought out on a hot dish was insanely hot and still cooking for a while after it was placed on the table. After that lady who successfully sued when she went to McDonalds and spilled the coffee in her own lap, it takes some guts to bring dishes out that are that hot. The Spicy Chicken Wings were good - great coating before the fry and nice sauce. And, in sum, all dishes were excellent but I give particularly high marks to the: * Seafood Pancakes * Seaweed Rice Noodle Salad * Beef Bulgogi If you have kids, they have a great deal for the youngsters - get them the rice bowl. Spoon Korean Bistro (SKB) was an incredible find and my best Korean dining experience in the San Francisco Bay Area. SKB is located nearby Berkeley Bowl West and I've driven by this place many times and only found out about it when looking for new lunch options in and around that part of Berkeley. The interior's very new and casual modern and is perfect to go to for brunch or lunch during the weekend. The service is top notch sincere and if you like your food prepared quickly, this place will have your order filled in less than 10 minutes. The quality of the food here is top notch and the portion sizes are perfect. Also, the food seems very healthy too and there are plenty of vegetarian selections. The best approach when eating here seems to be of ordering a la carte and sharing the dishes "family style." That way you can try a variety of items that will cost no more than $15-$20/person. The three of us tried the following: 1) Korean flavored sushi (imagine korean BBQ prepared like a California Roll) 2) Kimchi Pancakes (my favorite of all the dishes) 3) Sesami, Quinoa, chicken (add $2) porridge (my 2nd favorite dish. It was incredibly good) 4) Hot Tofu Soup (excellent quality here) 5) kind of chicken wrap with a strawberry on top of it that was excellent. Spoon is opened by the owners of Bowl'd on Solano Ave. and they serve many of the same dishes, but since Spoon is a little more of a brunch-y restaurant (although they have extended their hours now), they have some different things such as porridge and wraps. Berkeley has tons of good restaurants to dine at, and now I could add Spoon on the list! Came here with my bf and his cousins for lunch yesterday. Surprised there was even a good Korean restaurant in his area. I would the closest Korean restaurant would be in SF or Oakland. When I saw the restaurant, I was already biased. Since the font the restaurant used for their logo "Spoon" looked nice, I already assumed the food was going to be tasty. Thankfully the food kept up with my automatic 4 star rating. The restaurant is a bit small in size, but on a nice day you could even sit outside. We had enough space for a table of 12. We ordered a lot of appetizers and my favorite was the Fishcake Kimbap. It is basically Korean sushi. Really good! The seaweed they used to sushi-up their food was sturdy and had a bit of a crunch to it. Their rolls were large in size as well. It wasn't too spicy either. I also liked their appetizer pancake! It sort of lacked flavor but since it was fried, liked that it wasn't oily. I had the Kimchee Fried Rice with Beef. I had to wait a bit longer for my dish (I bet they forgot TBH). It's okay though, our waiter was super nice. The rice was enough to feed about 3 other people if everyone got one scoop! I didn't even finish all of it. I actually barely ate it because it was too much for lunch. Also I don't really like spicy food, but I really wanted to try Kimchee Fried Rice. I really liked it though, it's just the spiciness got a little to much for my mouth. I started burning up! lol. The rice grains were nice and mushy (but not to the point where it was too soggy). The beef added a hint of sweetness to it which was nice. Loved the egg on top and loved breaking it so it would ooze into the rice. Korean short ribs were like any other. Solid Korean spot within the neighborhood but a bit pricey and not craveworthy. I have been here a couple times with friends and family who have left full and satisfied. Some say its a bit lacking in flavor and others love love love the chicken wings. Here are my thoughts. The pro is that this is solid korean food with ample seating and decent flavors. The con is that the flavors are not memorable. The neutral is that the prices aren't exactly a value-point but not ridiculously expensive either ($15-20pp for an entree and maybe an appetizer). The dolsot bibimbap ($13) is standard and filling. The rice gets crispy and it's literally like a cross between fried rice and a beef bowl. This is my safety dish at every Korean restaurant. The bulgogi korean bbq ($14) could have used more of a grilled flavor but could probably feed 1.5 people with all the banchan they provide. Pro-tip: Order something like the tofu soup to-go and they'll also pack banchan for you in a neat segmented plastic container! read more

This is a very lovely Korean restaurant. It's definitely more cafe-style rather than hardcore KBBQ & smoke in your face all night. We came here for brunch and ordered the porridge. I've only ever had Chinese jook before and even then, I'm not a big fan of porridge. I never Korean-style porridge, so I can't quite compare. But overall, it was quite tasty! I recommend this dish. We also had the fried jap chae. Not a fan. It was too greasy for my taste (duh! its fried!) but there was something off about it. I asked Mr Y to finish the rest of it. Kimchi pancake was a bit bland for my taste, but I did appreciate that they cut up the pieces for me so that I didn't have to attack at it with a giant spoon (like at all the other Korean restaurants). We were looking for a new Korean spot when we found this place. All of our orders were above $50 and takeout (as opposed to dine-in). After our first two orders, we noticed that items were either missing or incorrect. On one occasion we ordered the Korean bbq (chicken) which was supposed to come with cabbage. No cabbage came with our order. On another occasion we ordered the seafood pancake, which was supposed come with a sauce. No sauce was included in our order. The last straw was when we ordered the seafood bibimbop and instead we received a BEEF bibimbop. We figured out the error when we got home. The pickled vegetables were tasteless, the rice felt dry (like they've been sitting out for a while) and.. there was KALE in the kimbap. So I'm not a kale hater... I'll eat it in forms that make sense (kale chips anyone?) but they don't belong in kimbap in their raw form... at least not in this kimbap. The kale's grassy flavor completely dominated this dish... Back Story: I think I went to their other location (Bowl'd) in Albany. Can't remember but what I do remember was the amazing glazed potatoes I had in the Albany location. I went to Korea the following spring hoping to find something similar. Unfortunately, all I could find was a candied sweet potato version of what this restaurant had. Very solid Korean food for a very good price! I usually order the tofu stew with mild spiciness. The tofu is a little on the soft side, so it may crumble when it's in the soup. If you prefer something with a firmer texture, order the spicy ramen noodle soup, but add a protein to that for $2 and it will still come out to $9, whereas the tofu stew has a base price of $10. I've gotten the seafood, beef, and mushroom tofu stew here and it's evident they don't cheap out on the protein. If you are one who prefer's purple rice over white risk, as for it! There's no additional charge for purple rice, and if you want to add rice, purple rice and white rice is the same price $1.50. Also, their purple rice is better than the purple rice you get at other places. It has a grainer texture and a more authentic taste to it. The unlimited side dishes they offer in addition to your meal is well pickled and seasoned just right. They also crack an egg into your soup, although most Korean places to so, some do not. Service is decent though may be slightly understaffed as it's usually one waiter for the whole restaurant. Although it is in downtown Berkeley, the place is relatively large. If you like having water with your meal, you'll have to ask for refills as they won't come around to refill water for you. It gets pretty crowded around noon on weekdays. Yum, yum, and yum. Given that Spoon is owned by the same people as Bowl'd, I am not surprised that my experience turned out so well. They keep a very simple menu, but the quality is fresh and top notch for everything that is served. I got the seafood noodle soup here and it's the best that I've had at any Korean restaurant so far. The noodles are very chewy and the broth has perfect texture and flavor. The bowl itself is huge and comes with plenty of veggies, meat, and mixed egg. My boyfriend got the beef tofu soup and also noted that it was definitely a lot better than what he usually expects. Other pros include: good price, very friendly service, and tasty side dishes. For a typical Korean place, their ban chan was slightly disappointing and none of them really stood out. The hot pot bi bim bap did not have the typical crunchy rice on the bottom that I crave so much when I'm judging bi bim bap. It was slightly crispy but soggier than most. The kimchi fried rice was pretty tasty and it was fried really well with a nice flavor to it. However I'm unable to handle much spice at all, and when I asked for the noodles to be served mild it was still slightly spicy. The noodles were pretty good though and had a nice bite to them. I heard they make the noodles themselves. The service is also a little spotty, most restaurants will stop serving food at a certain time but let you stay and finish your food. Ordered food to go from this place. First off, service here is awesome. The worker we spoke with was so helpful and patient. We got the beef tofu soup, spicy ramen, and the fish cake kimbop. The beef in the soup isn't like the bulgogi beef, it's shredded beef and wasn't really that good. The spicy ramen was super spicy and delicious. Fish cake kimbop was tasty. Bulgogi wasn't sizzling and lacked flavors. Wings were good and portion was very generous ($6). It had a strong citrusy taste but was still pretty good. I like their non-alcoholic drink menu, though. They offer a good selection of fruit teas and korean sodas. Service was very good and the waiters were friendly; although they did not refill our teas. And...it might not matter to some people but the ambiance there reminds me more of a cafe than a restaurant. I'll definitely come back for the wings and try their spicy ramen. I'm really disappointed with my last visit to Spoon I was an avid fan. Last night I was craving Spoon and was excited to show my partner this place but as soon as I got there the place felt a little hectic, which is fine I understand when things get busy it's hard to reach everyone but it wasn't that busy.. we got sat inside. I ordered everything was fine until I received my order and I found a hair in my food, I got offered two options and it was a whole new meal or partial discount. I was left nauseated by the hair as I am pregnant and little things make me not want to eat all together. I accepted the discount but the hair and food was left on the table while my partner was still finishing his food. The whole time I was there a little girl was spinning in circles almost bumping into our table and I know kids are kids but she was with one of the servers and I felt like he didn't have any control over the situation. I was ready to pay this woman who I know didn't work there but was the servers partner approached me without a mask and took my card to be charged by my server.. as a server that has worked in the industry for 8+ years this is completely unacceptable, that made me very uncomfortable and I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

Went on a double date tonight and were in the mood for Korean food! We were a bit worried the place would be small but it was a nicely sized, nicely spaced restaurant with friendly waitstaff. We each ordered our own dish: Bulgogi entree, Kimchi Fried Rice, Soft Tofu Stew with Kimchi - extra spicy, Soft Tofu Stew with Beef - spicy. By the way, I am Korean-American, so I tend to compare with momma's homecooking. I didn't try the extra spicy soft tofu stew, but I had the regular spicy, and I felt like it hit the spot but didn't have a kick that would make your eyes water. Enough to warm you up on a chilly night out in the Bay. Also note that the kimchi is, apparently, vegan. Anyways, although the side dishes were not so impressive, everything else was absolutely splendid and unforgettable. I also ordered a Sprite, which came out as the Korean brand version of lemon lime soda, which somehow tasted more fizzy and fresh in taste than regular Sprite! Weird huh? Moving on, the restaurant is cozy and also has outdoor seating. They also offer Korean snacks such as ChocoPie and those onion ring chips, as well as Korean ice cream! Try the one shaped like a fish filled with red bean and vanilla ice cream, I swear to you that it's one of the most bomb yet simple desserts you'll ever try! Classic korean dessert btw. The juk I got was like a movin' on up to the East side finally got a piece of the pie version of Cream of Wheat with John Cho on the box instead of Danny Glover. It was deceptively satiating and lazy. To me, everything else on the menu was post-breakfast, perhaps even post-brunch, fare. Or if you prefer dessert for breakfast, there's PATBINGSU. Yet, given Bowl'd and Spoon's health slant, I'm guessing it's not topped with Cinnamon Toast Crunch (Arang) or Fruity Pebbles (Playground froyo). Proceed with care through the JEON section of the menu. I believe half are pancakes and half are not. So rather than go by the section headline of "pancakes", fully read the captions for each item. It's a shame, too, that the gul jeon is egged and fried oysters like at Dong Baek and not gul pajeon like at New Korea House. If the dubu jeon had been a pancake like Holy Moly used to have, it alone would have been a reason for me to make trips from SF to eat here. Alas, it was not a pancake but egged and fried tofu squares. I'm now holding one or two stars for pancake ransom. I should make it back sometime to try their custom fruit / grain DRINKS. Bonus factor: They get East Bay Express delivered out front. Sober factor: It looked to me like there wasn't any alcohol anywhere. I know it's a breakfast place, but it's a Korean breakfast place. yummy foods ;) food for the seoul ;) we ordered kimchi stew, kimbop with fish cake,bulgogi I esp like the kimbop...so tasty and so addicting we finish the wholething in minutes lol i definitely recommend to try. service was good and size of the place was just right & cozy...you could dine in outside the place. $1 korean ice cream was just yumm after the meal. read more

I love Korean food so much I visit and try out many Korean restaurants. Spoon is one of my favorite. It is exactly same chain restaurant as Bowl D on telegraph and Solano ave. Some reason I noticed Spoon is much cheaper than other 2 locations. They have good customer service and good food. I like to order soft tofu stew and Korean BBQ . This location has outside seating so great for hot days or if you come with your dog. They also have point system where you can get to collect points to get free appetizer. After meal I usually enjoy their red bean ice cream. read more
