I first came across the Spoon and the Stars as I was passing through Drogheda town in July and made a mental note to check it out sometime - hands-down the MOST enjoyable and satisfying hostel experience in Ireland I've come across to date.
The Spoon and the Stars has a helluva lot going for it - above anything else, Rory the owner and his crew really do make it a point to make you feel as if you're stepping into a home away from home. The Spoon and the Stars IS literally the place they call home and work, and you can tell from the way they work as a team to make the place seem totally inviting, friendly, tidy, a refuge from the grind of travel as much as to try and make you feel that there is nothing better than being shown genuine hospitality, a few laughs and as comfortable a night's sleep as possible.
The hostel is a redecorated house with both private en-suite rooms and dorm style accommodation - it has a communal bathroom that is always super clean and has a radio playing all the time for a bit of company, and there's 'The Cave' where you can chill out with both travelers and long-term residents alike, smoking and non-smoking brethren - everyone's welcome to sit in and natter away. There's another outdoor patio area and a very relaxing living area - again, the place was a terraced house at one point and Rory and Hannah do their best to make the place have the look and the feel of a home away from home.
The kitchen is probably my favourite part of the place - a shared kitchen area where EVERYONE tends to drift through throughout the day, and you usually end up starting to cook and end up getting into lots of amusing, interesting conversations, sharing a coffee and usually trying out some amazing tasting food - so far I've tasted several Croatian, Spanish, French and random impromptu things that have totally hit the spot and made me feel happy to have passed up on any local take aways.
The Spoon and the Stars is on the Dublin Road and literally opposite Drogheda town, with the narrow Boyne River meandering in between. The bus station is like barely 5 minutes walk and the train station is also a stone's throw. It's just opposite a shopping centre - the Scotch Hall shopping centre that has a Dunnes stores for food and even a Domino's Pizza just down the street if you're feeling lazy and don't want to cook from scratch.
If you fancy a break from the Dublin hostel scene or looking for a weekend wandering around Newgrange etc, or on your way to/from Northern Ireland, you should really give the Spoon and the Stars a chance. I'm super glad I did. ;) read more
