This weekend my daughter had her 5th birthday party at Splurge Bakery and it was a complete and total success. Based on the feedback I received from guests this was one of the most entertaining, thought out and enjoyable parties of the year. My daughter already asked if we can book her next party there and my youngest daughter (three years old) wants her next party there as well. Our party consisted of the kids making their own pizza (and eating it of course) and making and decorating their own cookie (to take with them) and included a delicious chocolate cake. With a total of five employees plus the owner assisting during the party the kids has plenty of help prepping, cooking, cleaning, washing and then eating. Even better the parents didn't (couldn't) enter the cooking area, giving everyone a chance to take a break and simply watch their kids have a blast through the giant glass window. The bakery is clean, the food is delicious, the staff is helpful and the owner is delightful. I would also like to add that in addition to a great party place they are also a full service bakery - the treats are fantastic, even the coffee is superb, and the prices are all reasonable. I wanted to like the cake, I really did... the people at the store were so nice... but ah well, I have to call it as I see it as the review is about the food. I called to special order a birthday carrot cake for my wife. Since we always find cakes and pastries sold in stores and restaurants to be too sweet, I requested for a "low sugar" version of the cake. They said no can do. But they said, they DO make a "no sugar" cake, but in chocolate flavor. Since my wife's favorite cake is carrot cake, I said fine, I'll take the carrot cake anyway. Two days later I went to pick it up. The cake looked very pretty... but when we took the first bite, we were very dissapointed. As expected, the cake (as well as the frosting) was WAYYYYY too sweet. Not only that, the cake itself was not moist at all. In fact, it was very dry. Since they were making our cake from scratch, I just don't understand why they couldn't just take my request to use half the amount of sugar called for by the recipe. Sigh. Let me begin with this: my one experience here was at 4:30pm on Valentine's Day. Options were extremely limited, mostly chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting. Nothing inspired. Also, no one working seemed very interested in helping me or discussing the products. I noticed another person in line had pre-ordered cupcakes, and they just filled boxes with the chocolate options left in the case. I could tell she was disappointed. I made it a point not to buy cupcakes at Gigis (I've been buying their mini cupcakes a lot lately when entertaining) so I could give my husband a new cupcake for VDay dessert. Splurge bakery was a welcome addition to the Millburn Downtown, from the fresh whimsical decor, to the friendly eager to please staff, to the array of delicious treats, it's a quick decision to shop here, whether I need an occasion cake or just a little reward for a good grade in school. Julie Winer carefully oversees her young staff as they move between the counters and the always busy party room. I had my daughters birthday here, and it was a pleasure. All the kids had fun, and the party attendants were so interested in them and making it special, it was genuine and very personal, as well as delicious. I felt the entire staff earned my thanks, and the attendants did such a great job, they really earned their tip!! We attended a birthday party and a sheet cake with Oreo frosting from Splurge was served. The cake was quite dry and sweet. The Oreo filling was tasty but way too sweet as well especially for kids. We did not enjoy it but of course the kids loved the frosting. read more

What a gem! I wanted to do a gender reveal with cupcakes so I called splurge and they were so sweet and accommodating to my quick request. I only had 15 or so minutes till I had to get back to work so they got it done nice and fast. The cupcakes looked adorable and were even more delicious than I expected. A popular spot for kids' birthday parties, and admittedly, they provide a unique experience. I got a cake there once and gotta say it wasn't as fantastic as I anticipated it to be. Nothing necessarily wrong but no wow factor in design or taste. The bad thing about this is place is the service. Usually one person at the counter and if one, just one person is front of you, you will wait, and wait and wait. Just really slow to process orders and no multi tasking here. For your bake goods needs, I'd recommend traveling to Summit and going to NATALES (5 mins from Splurge). These guys are rock stars! read more

Due to some last minute planning I found myself looking for a place that could sell me a birthday cake the same day. I called them and they said they had some ready for sale so I went in to see them, but unfortunately they were too small for what I needed (6 inches). The associate who helped me said I could order an 8 inch and they'd have it ready in an hour. I picked up the cake and it was great! This might be a cute place to have a birthday party, but it's a mediocre bakery at best. It smells like cleaning products in here, which is not appetizing. I didn't find the staff very helpful and I had to go elsewhere to order my cake. Went here for a 3 year olds birthday party, so this review is focused on that particular service. They did an amazing job of wrangling a bunch of 2-4 year olds; they had them busy making their own pizza and then decorating their own cupcakes to take home. The staff was incredible attentive and patient. The room the party was in comfortably housed a ton of people (maybe ~20 kids plus their parents?) On street parking was easy to find. And all the cakes and cookies in the storefront side looked incredible! read more

Unusual for me to write a review, good or bad...I was very disappointed. I was in the mood for a cupcake but the place I like was closed. I remember Splurge from when I use to bring my daughter to the park across the street and it do remember it being good but hadn't been in a few years. Paid $7 for 2 cupcakes...1st one was stale-cupcake and icing was hard & had no flavor. 2nd, taste was ok but crumpling apart while I was eating it. Wish I didnt waste my money. We found our cake to be dry and lacking flavor. When we brought to the owner's direct attention via email, we never heard back and had to follow up. She did eventually respond, promising another cake for no charge. When we did take her up on that offer, she changed the terms and was not friendly through the process. After reading all the negative reviews, I was extremely scared, because I had tentatively decided to go with Splurge to do the photo cake for my parent's 49th wedding anniversary. Since , I'm my own man, I decided to come in and try a cupcake or two. Well, I'm so glad that I did and didn't listen to any of these negative reviews. The chocolate cupcake w/ vanilla buttercream was fantastic! Flavorful and very moist. After trying the cupcake, I told the worker that day that he should let the owner know about all of these negative reviews on their site. He shared that for some reason, Yelp filters all the negative reviews, because they believe, sometimes, that positive reviews are not sincere. I understand, but I think a better system needs to be instituted. But, I digress. We got the cake on Friday the 29th, the same day as my wedding rehearsal dinner, and we couldn't have been happier. The cake looked great; tasted great; and my parents were very impressed with my thoughtfulness. Splurge is a little gem of a bakery in Millburn, New Jersey. In my experienced opinion as a serious lover of baked goods, Splurge is so much better than Magnolia in NYC (overrated) and Crumbs (dry cupcakes). Not your standard, run-of-the mill bakery with dry cupcakes, fake shortening-laden frosting and tasteless cookies. Splurge has gourmet cupcakes and cakes, REAL frosting, delicious little treats. My husband works in the area and frequently stops in after work to buy treats to bring home. The cupcakes are amazing - moist, full of flavor and highly addictive. Our favorites are: Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting, "Hostess" style cupcakes, Banana, Peanut Butter Cup, and Oreo. We also order our birthday cakes from Splurge - the Red Velvet is moist, dense, and flavorful - the owner uses real beet juice in the recipe to cut down on the amount of food coloring needed. We also just had the Chocolate Raspberry Cake, which was delicious - chocolate cake, chocolate frosting & a yummy raspberry buttercream filling. Our favorite is the peanut butter cake. I've been known to eat most of that cake myself, taking nibbles all day each time I pass through the kitchen. Our kids love the Chocolate Bombe dessert - a mound of chocolate-glazed marshmallow fluff on top of a graham cracker cake base. Their tiramisu is excellent. Their banana pudding is to-die-for! My son and I are seriously disappointed when my husband comes home from Splurge without any banana pudding. My daughter loves their peanut butter mousse served up in little chocolate cups. Honestly, the only things we don't care for are the mini cheesecakes (too dense). It's a great place to have birthday parties. Cheerfully decorated, with great staff to assist the kids in making their pizzas and dessert. People with allergies, please note that this bakery uses wheat, dairy, nuts, eggs in its products - it's a BAKERY, and it's not specifically set up to be allergen-free. Please, give Splurge a try. Walked into this place on Saturday and walked out empty handed with no one in the this "bakery" showing any care whatsoever. No one even greeted two adults that could have bought a lot had someone recognized we were even there out of the 4+ people that were working there. I even think the owner was there but she would rather answer the phone. After seeing the selection; non existent in variety, small and way overpriced, we walked out and headed to Natales in Summit for cheaper, larger and much more variety of cupcakes. I had a 4 year birthday party for my daughter at Splurge. Everyone had a great time, the children and the parents included. The 3 girls that ran the party, Julia, Viviana and Alicia were lovely and did a fantastic job keeping 10 kids happy and entertained and kept everything running smoothly. And the best part is all I had to do was show up! They do everything and supply everything including pastries and coffee or tea for the parents! My husband found this bakery online and surprised me with a birthday cake which I ended up calling "The Mother of All Birthday Cakes". Vanilla cake stuffed with oreos with buttercream frosting all over the outside and oreo cookies around it. Holy cow. Then my mother came to visit from Maine and after she heard me raving about the cake she demanded that we check it out. Well, we ended up buying at least one of pretty much everything in the store. Things must have changed from these earlier reviews because there was more than plenty to pick from: chocolate chip cookies (phenomenal), brownies, cake pops, cupcakes, brownie bars of all different types, and they can take your company logo and put it on cookies. She gave us a sampling of something that kind of looked like smashed popcorn but it was actually crushed graham crackers covered in white chocolate. Unbelievable. There were a few pies there as well. We bought a few pieces to try and each one of them was terrific. And last but not least the peanut butter chocolate cups. I think it was peanut butter mousse in a chocolate cup. Really good. We ended up ordering several more cakes for other occasions there and it was well worth it. The owner is a doll and offered to make almost any type of cake I came up with. They get very busy so I would make sure you give them enough time to make a custom cake. I highly recommend Splurge and will absolutely be back. read more

Please DO NOT give this owner your money. She's awful. The ONLY thing my daughter asked for on her second birthday was a hippo cake. I called over a week in advance (I had tasted a birthday cake from Splurge and enjoyed it) and was told they were too busy that moment to take an order, so I left my number for them to call me back. Never received a call back, so I called again the next day and ordered a chocolate cake, strawberry filling, with vanilla buttercream. Day of the party, I called to give the owner my credit card info, so my husband could just do a quick pick up. She's says, "UGH. I'm so busy with a line out the door. Ugh, just hurry up and give me the card info." So rude! I said, "I'll just try you back later." Well, I didn't get around to it and my husband went to the shop for pick up. Of course, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE CAKE!!! They never made it/had no record of it/didn't seem to care. My husband put me on the phone at that point and I explained the ($65!!!) cake I had ordered, WELL IN ADVANCE. She said, well when do you need it? Um, the party starts in an hour. She had two flourless chocolate cakes she put together with buttercream (it was INSANELY sweet in a not-good way) and while it did end up looking cute, it was not what we wanted. Instead of apologizing, she curtly said, "no charge." Not a smart way to run a business. It's unfortunate because I did enjoy her regular chocolate cake and would have absolutely gone back had it not been for the INSANELY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more
