Chicken Taco Salad (about $15) is good and full of fresh tasting ingredients
    Tracey A.

It seems only fitting that here, in what's widely regarded as the birthplace of mountain biking, one should dine at a bike shop. Alternatively, it might also be apt that one could purchase a mountain bike while waiting for their food. Either way, Split Rock Tap & Wheel has you covered and I mean that quite literally. Their compact menu seems to include a favorite from every currently trending cuisine. Meaning what? Let's just say I very much enjoyed my Chicken Taco Salad (about $15) while my dining partner had similar feelings about his Lamb & Beef Shawarma. They have Banh Mi on the menu but everybody in the place seemed to be ordering pizza on the day I visited, many served topped with a salad-sized helping of fresh arugula. With a large, dog-friendly, covered, outdoor seating area Split Rock is a good choice when the weather is nice. They have indoor tables as well (no dogs allowed). Whether or not you arrive in biking gear, Split Rock's food and casual, clean ambiance are a nice addition to the Fairfax dining scene. I can't speak for the bike shop portion of the place but the food side seems to be serving up exactly what this community wants.

Thai smash tacos minus aïoli added Sriracha

The Thai smashed pork tacos have to be probably one of the best things in Marin County right now they are so good. Nothing like I've had before they are amazing. Also the staff like Sterling so friendly and his knowledge of beer is exceptional. If you haven't been here come try it, if you have come try the tacos.

Solid lunch spot in Fairfax. Great chicken pesto sandwich. The wrap was good too. Cheeses garlic bread was bomb too. Pizzas are pretty standard/basic toppings but look great. Good beer too. Highly recommend going with dogs, kids, or messy hiking/biking gear.

    The Bar and Beer Menu

After putting in a few hours of vigorous Marin riding, my cycling buddies and I recently visited Split Rock Tap and Wheel to get a well deserved beer and some lunch. We had a mixed experience. Positively speaking, Split Rock offers a good selection of local craft beers on tap. The outdoor patio is spacious and a great spot to park your bike, relax and enjoy a cold brew with other cyclists. Additionally, the prices are pretty reasonable, which is always a good thing these days. Don't get me started on beer prices going north of $10 at other places. Unfortunately, the service was exceptionally slow, taking at least 20 minutes to place our orders, and another 25-30 minutes to receive our food. I was done with my beer by the time the food arrived and would have ordered another to pair with my food order but that long line was going nowhere. Yes it was a Saturday at 2pm so your experience may vary but it's no secret that Fairfax eateries catering to cyclists will likely get hit hard on weekends. The Cubano sandwich I ordered was pretty average and that may be a fairly generous assessment. If you are considering the Cubano - don't. My buddies fortunately had a bit better food experience than I did but still nothing to write home about. Maybe I should have stuck with the specials board but I always like to try Cubano's if they are on the menu. To improve the dining experience, I might suggest having more than one register taking orders. Or maybe have a register dedicated to beverage orders. Or if another register isn't possible, having a dedicated staff member helping the register guy out by just pouring beers. Hell, if people are drunk enough, the slow food services will seem trivial. Additionally, I'd recommend minimizing the menu to focus on a smaller selection of dishes (around 8-10) and ensuring that they are executed exceptionally well. Look no further than The Joinery in Sausalito for tips on that. This way, the kitchen can focus on perfecting a handful of signature items rather than spreading themselves thin across a wide range of choices. Finally, the lack of attention to clearing tables was noticeable. It would be beneficial for the servers to also have the responsibility of bussing tables upon their return trip from food delivery to ensure a clean dining environment. In conclusion, Split Rock Tap and Wheel has its strengths, such as the variety of local craft beers and a nice social outdoor patio. However, the slow service, mediocre food, and some operational improvements prevents me from suggesting a visit. It's a place that tries to do too many things, but perhaps it's time to focus on mastering a select few.

    Banh Mi (beef)
    Mark K.

On our way back from the beach, I stopped here with my daughters for a Father's Day lunch. This was my first time here. This is also a bike shop, but that wasn't my goal today. I ordered the shawarma with beef and lamb. One daughter ordered the (beef) Bahn Mi. My other daughter ordered the meatball sandwich. I tried everything because it all looked so good. Everything was as good as it looked. The garlic dill pickle was very tasty. They have a very nice list of beers, but didn't get a chance to try any. Note: Most of the Covid restrictions were lifted a few days ago (June 15th), but most businesses (employees) still mask up. No one here appeared to be masked up. Just in case that matters to you. My daughter made the point that they should at least let people know that all employees are fully vaccinated. Had to take away a star for that.

What a great pizza and delicious beers. Came here after quite a brutal hike .. wasn't disappointed!

    Kimberly H.

Super dog friendly, tons of bicycle equipment and beer accessories for purchase, and very nice staff. There's a private parking lot with ample parking, relatively wide range of beer and food options. The cubano was really great. The pizza was a bit wet and needed to be consumed with utensils as it was a bit difficult to pick up by hand.

This location in greater San Rafael is a bit out of my way, but a recent trip to Marin was an opportunity to make up for the lost. Located in a business center, parking here is not an issue and they were not particularly busy on a Sunday night. We were seated immediately, noticing how clean and modern the two-story gastropub looks. The food menu is more or less pub food, executed well. Mango-habanero wings were crispy and came with two dipping sauces, both delicious. We also tired the pretzel, which is on a smaller size, so next time I'll take our server's suggestion and order two. It also came with mustard and cheese for dipping. All their burgers are more or less a la carte: no fries, but chips and house pickle on the side. The burgers were fine though, with smash being smaller, but a bit tastier than their signature Monk's burger. Simplicity is sometimes the best. The beer list is expertly curated with focus on other styles besides IPA, but I assume that Russian River's Pliny the Elder and Blind Pig are always on the menu, in addition to ultra-local options. For pub fare, Monk's Kettle is a bit pricy, which is not totally unexpected in today's economy-especially knowing the area. However, elevated food, drinks, and service quality usually comes with the elevated price tag. We might not be back next time in Marin, but this was surely not the last visit to Monk's.

It is very true that it is difficult to get in this spot during peak hours. A waitlist will have you on point, but you will still have to wait a little bit to get in. Trust me - it's all worth it. The team of hosts and wait staff treats you kindly, even though there's the "stress" of a wait. Once seated in the dimly lit space, everything happens more quickly. Your order is taken and it's not long before you get some plates coming your way. The food. Amazing. Simply delicious. Well thought out, fresh and well presented. I had the black sesame asparagus - the sauce so incredible. Then the sake sashimi was melt in your mouth quality. And a couple well equipped rolls satisfied every desire. Wine by the glass on the list, besides beers and sake. A must-go sushi place for the Bay Area. We were second in line. The doors opened, and the hostess seated a couple, a man and woman, in a booth. My wife and I, two women, were second. The hostess pointed us to a table with chairs up front. We told her we would like a booth. She said they save booths for parties of four. I pointed out the couple that had just been seated in a booth. She looked irritated and just pointed to the table with chairs. I politely asked for a booth again. She looked more irritated, and pointed to the worst booth. It was a booth on one side and chairs on the other, right behind the greeting podium. She walked away, and we sat ourselves in a normal booth. I was actually wondering if someone was going to ask us to move. The whole experience really put a damper on our night although we tried to pretend it didn't happen so we could enjoy ourselves. In addition, my hamachi was not good at all, and I have eaten a lot of hamachi in my time.
