SPLIT Bakehouse is a really cute walk-up vegan bakery in the Grossmont Center mall. Their photos on Yelp looked so good I had to try it. When you get there, you should ring the bell next to the door and someone will come up to the ordering window for you. After you've ordered, they will box them up for you and give them to you through the window. My friend and I ordered several things, including a carrot muffin, a raspberry poptart, and a lemon custard cruffin. We ordered three pastries and from my memory I believe it was about $22. We did not enjoy the carrot muffin - it was very chewy and did not have a similar consistency to non-vegan carrot cake. The lemon custard cruffin was delicious and definitely our favorite. lastly the raspberry pop tart had a delicious crust and raspberry topping, but the inside of it was almost completely hollow, and there was hardly any raspberry filling in it at all.

Selection of goodies - cheese Danish, brownie, cherry pistachio cruffin, hazelnut croissant (terrible), and cinnamon roll muffin

I placed an order online and picked up my goodies at Camp Coffee Roasters in Oceanside - figured I wasn't missing out on much in terms of ambiance since this business is just a pickup window ;) Overall I was a bit disappointed and would try a different bakery in SD next time instead of coming back here. What I ordered: Cheeze Danish: 4/5 - not my usual type of dessert but I don't come across vegan versions often! It was sprinkled with sugar which I could've done without. Brownie: 3/5 - my husband's choice, I'm not really a brownie person and this one didn't do much to move the needle Croissant Filled with Chocolate Hazelnut Spread: 1/5 - terrible, the filling tasted bitter and almost lemony? I was expecting a Nutella-esque filled croissant but was instead completely confused on whether I was given the wrong thing (I wasn't, matched the photos). Super disappointed as I was looking forward to this one the most. Cherry Pistachio Cruffin: 5/5 - the best of the bunch I tried. I appreciated the real fruit and not just 'cherry flavoring' Cinnamon Roll with Glaze: 4/5 - pretty good, comes in a muffin liner and has the perfect amount of cinnamon-y filling I also got a chocolate chip cookie at Nibble Chocolate. It was soft and delicious though a few more chocolate chips inside would be great - I give it a 4/5. It's nice that Split Bakehouse sells their goodies at several establishments around town.

I appreciate a business that offers vegan or dairy free options, but I LOVE a business that is all vegan. Found a new fav as it is hard to come by dairy free desserts/pastries that are tasty. I ordered the cinnamon roll as that is one of my fav items growing up. Flavor was there and was warm when I got it. I didn't finish the whole thing as it is pretty big. The one thing that threw me off is that it dried or harden by night time. Note to self either be willing to eat the whole thing when I buy it or warm it up a bit before eating it again (of saved for later). Definitely coming back to try their other pastries. If you are having a hard time find it, it is by the food court across from Macy's.

Blueberry lemon scone, cinnamon roll, black sesame yuzu croissant, and cream cheese with berry pastry

Was having breakfast at Kensington cafe, and noticed that people would come in and just order lattes with a pastry to go instead of sit down to eat a big breakfast. I was intrigued, so I checked out the case and learned that this cafe sources their pastries from SPLIT in Grossmont Center. We had to pick up a box and it was tough to narrow down our choices. All looked amazing! See video of various selections. We were happy with our choices. The scone was even moist! Singing high praises for these pastries, kudos to the owner of SPLIT.

Love their lavender donut. Not only was it pretty, it was really delicious. The only problem is that I should have gotten 2.

Discovered SPLIT during the pandemic when they did deliveries of their delicious vegan treats. Finally made it over to their little location in the Grossmont Center for some treats. It's a tiny spot with an order window. I've always been greeted by friendly service! So many people freak out when they hear the word vegan, but you would barely know the difference! They have delicious treats from scones to galettes to cookies and other pastries. It's hard to narrow down what you're going to choose! Such a great spot to order from! You can also check out their online website to see their menu and place an online order.

Store front

Every time we enter the food court from the back entrance, I'm intrigued by this pretty pink store front. Almost intimidating because it reminds me of naughty shop because of all the blackout windows, despite all the baking art. My fiancé thought it was a magic shop. I also find it odd that it's such a large store but it's only this little 6x4 space like one of those parking exits where you pay before you get out. The menu are the real life display of the pastries along the window sill. Then you push a button to ring the bell and someone comes out from behind the curtain, open the window for you to place your order. Finally gave it a chance today. I got the orange lavender scone. I'm not a fan of scones because they come across dry to me but some places can make them really moist. Well, this place was not one of them. It's a slight hint of orange flavor in the scone and the lavender is supposed to be in the frosting. I didn't detect any lavender and honestly, I could barely swallow. I had to take a bite with the frosting to get an even balance of saliva just to swallow. The frosting is not even distributed so some parts is just like bread. Reminds me why I don't order scones but I'm a sucker for anything lavender. You'll have to eat it with tea or coffee. The jalapeño cream cheese galette was everything. I'm not vegan but almost forgot it wasn't cheese until writing this very sentence. Taste just like the real thing. It was fluffy and puffy along the edges and the middle was a thin layer of crust with cheese. The girl recommended to pop it in the toaster oven for 3 minutes and top it off with a slice of avocado. OMG, it was already tasty prior to toasting but afterwards, it was even better. Thank you for that tip! They have muffin, cookies, pop tart, biscuit and sweet and savory galettes. The girl said they usually change out the flavors every two months but for the most part, it's the same. I'm sure the space is used for baking. But I would to be able to step inside to get the full experience instead of just stepping up to a window and not seeing them grab my order. Like, is it fresh? How was it stored?

Poptart, concha , cream cheese danish, cronut

The pastry is amazing!!!!! The cream cheese danish and the pop tart were my favorite!!! The service was nice. You ring the door bell and they come to this little window you order and then they go to the back and get it . There isn't really an ambiance it's like a little pick up window .

Inside of Raspberry Pop Tart

I didn't have any high hopes going in, BUT WOW!!! I am surprised!!! It's so delicious! I didn't think the iconic pop tart would ever be dethroned. I got the raspberry pop tart. I got it because it looked really cute. It was so delicious! It was flakey with just the right amount of filling. The icing was delicious too. It was just the right amount of sweetness!

Usually when you tell me Vegan I run the other way. But SPLIT Bakehouse has some amazing Vegan pastries that make me want to come back. My wife and I ordered the Matcha Sugar Cookie, Banana Foster Galette with Caramel, Thai Tea Pastry Cream stuffed Cruffin and Ube Brioche Loaf with pistachios. The matcha sugar cookie was only meh. But everything else we ordered were super yummy. Hands down my most favorite were the thai tea cruffin and ube brioche loaf. The thai tea cruffin was oozing with not too sweet but definitely thai tea tasting flavors. The cruffin was still flaky and moist at the same time which is difficult to achieve. The ube brioche loaf was also oozing with some tasty ube. I love that everything was flavored just right and wasn't too sweet. Can't wait to come back and try their other pastries!

Got a chance to come visit the Grossmont Center location for SPLIT Bakehouse - they're currently only using their small take-out window, which can get a bit crowded at busy times as it's right outside the food court, where a lot of foot traffic happens. They have a small display case of what's available - you go up to the window to order, and depending on the size of your order, it can be a quick pay and grab or a longer wait for larger boxes. Bananas Foster Galette w/ Caramel ($5.50): This was absolutely delicious - a must try if you like Bananas Foster. The caramelized Bananas and the Caramel drizzle compliment each other, while having the nice pastry crust balance the sweetness out. Thai Tea Cruffin ($5.50): Definitely one of my favorite things I've had from SPLIT Bakehouse! The Cruffin was delightfully flaky from the Croissant layers, and was perfectly formed into a Muffin shape for ease of eating. The Thai Tea cream was AMAZING!!!! I had to make sure each of my bites had a taste of the Thai Tea as to savor it until the very end. They did have an Ube Pistachio Brioche Loaf on their website, but I was saddened to not see it at their take-out window. Hopefully next time I can get all the goodies I want!

Vanilla Bean Donut

Great vegan and regular non-vegan baked goods. I have enjoyed their products from a melee of location around San Diego, specifically coffee shops and such. Recently, I have been visiting their location at Grossmont Center where the bakery is currently located. They offer a small walk up window and a couple of window displays with there current products etc. On this day, I had the Cheddar Corn Jalapeno Biscuit and a Vanilla Bean Doughnut. Both came out to $8 and change. I crunched on the savory first or the biscuit. I warmed it up in the toaster oven for about 15 minutes. Waiting and heating it up is certainly worth it. It came with a very good amount of vegan cheddar cheese and sliced fresh jalapenos. The biscuit had a good crust and soft center. It was very flavorful, and I loved the way the jalapeno flavor came through nicely. The vanilla bean doughnut, a doughnut I've had before, was terrific. It tasted great and the vanilla flavor was just grand. It's texture was also very soft and delicate. I loved the vanilla frosting a top. Great flavor. The young lady at the front window was friendly enough.

So good! We've gone to Split after learning about them from Loving Hut in Mira Mesa. Their vegan cheesecake is a must-try!

After checking, she informed me that she could not find the card in their system, but she wanted to check with the manager as their system had changed. The manager Guilermo, then approached me. In a very nice manner he asked several questions about the card, including how much I thought was on it. When I informed him that I thought there was $13.00 on the card, he immediately deleted that amount from the bill. Both he and Norma were accommodating and respectful throughout. I will definitely be eating at Farmer's Table in the future.

Food: The food was visually very inviting and tasty. Usually you pay for the ambience not the high food quality in SD proper, but here you get both. Also looks like they're bringing in a RAW BAR! I'll definitely be coming back for that! **I got the chilequilles a with steak and figured they'd phone it in, but it was SOOO good. Well cooked, seasoned, and sliced. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the coffee was exceptional (hot and cold) and the mimosas were a middle ground of heavy handed Hillcrest mimosas and just a regular pour. They're not skimping out. They also have parking which really makes this whole place worth it even if it was mediocre, which it wasn't!

The moment I walked in, I was warmly greeted and asked if I wanted a table for one. I said no, I was hoping to order takeout, and she kindly invited me to sit at the bar while I looked over the menu. Right away, the atmosphere felt welcoming, beautiful, and relaxed. I ordered my food, sipped my water, and honestly didn't think I had ordered that much. Then she came out with multiple filled brown bags of food! First of all, the prices were amazing. Second... the food was TOP NOTCH and completely different from what I had the night before. The tzatziki was bright and refreshing, the hummus topped with beef shawarma was rich and flavorful, and the ney classic plate was generous enough to easily feed two, maybe even three, without sacrificing quality anywhere on the plate. It was the perfect way to try a lot of their items at once and that one disappointed! What really says it all is that I am already looking forward to the leftovers, which is rare for me.
