I've attended Ruckus Revival here in the past, and more recently, Hoodslam aka Slam Town, a fun and hilarious wrestling show made up of odd and amusing characters. The space is versatile, fitting for a range of entertainment programs or as a nightclub, though it's on the plain side. There are a few booth seats and tables throughout. They have an outdoor area too, off the second floor, with additional seating and great artwork on the walls. There are bars on both levels, but service isn't the fastest, and they are strict about not allowing viewers on the entire side of the balcony near the upstairs bar. Also, the offerings for different events are not consistent. For instance, they offered food before, but only drinks during our recent visit. And sometimes they provide a drink menu, other times they don't. The cocktails are small and weak, especially when the tiny plastic cups are filled with ice, but not bad in terms of flavor. I actually enjoyed the sweetness of the lemon drop here. For an event space, the Continental Club works... especially with all the wild and crazy that goes on within those walls.

I also enjoyed watching a couple of World Cup games on the big screen earlier this year. Both the WNBA Finals and World Cup watch parties were free, nicely organized, and had great energy. Thrive City has free live music series at lunchtime, which encourages me to leave my office nearby and get outside for fresh air. They also offer no cost fitness classes like yoga and Pilates which I want to try.

When I asked for the rental fee, I was never given a straight answer, instead I was pressured to disclose how much I was charging my vendors. After finally agreeing to a fee and then it was suddenly doubled less than a week before my July 13 event. The excuse? That the downstairs space was being "opened for me," even though I never requested it. The owner also insisted I rewrite a press release to promote their "Broadway Revival" agenda, something that had nothing to do with my event. I ended up doing free promotion for their venue and agenda when they should have been paying me. Out of courtesy, I gave an additional $400, clearly stating in writing that it was only for two extra load-in hours on Saturday night and for Sunday's bartender. Once inside on Saturday to do load in with the vendors, I had to spend two hours cleaning just to make the space usable. I paid them, to clean their space. A total joke. When I arrived at 8 a.m. on July 13, after multiple confirmations with the GM Tom that he would personally be the point of contact, nobody was there to open the doors. Vendors and I were left standing outside, delaying setup for an event I had spent months preparing. Other major issues: -I was told there were plenty of 6ft tables for vendors. There were none. I had to buy my own and then fight for weeks to retrieve them. The GM dodged my requests, only returning them after I threatened to file a police report for theft over a month later. -The owner repeatedly told acquaintances they could vend without checking with me, forcing me to awkwardly deny people tables at my own event. -Minutes before opening, I was told the event had to be 21+ only. Families were turned away at the door, vendors lost sales, and community trust was damaged. -The bartender arrived late, overcharged guests, and pocketed the difference. -The sound system malfunctioned, undermining performances and leaving the space silent at times. Afterward, I still tried to resolve things professionally. I met with the GM, Tom Watson, and we agreed to host again on October 3rd, with promises that things would go smoother. He assured me multiple times it was confirmed, but kept dodging signing the contract. On August 18, he finally admitted he had double-booked and wanted me to move my date, even though he had booked the other promoter after me. After weeks of being strung along, I've had no choice but to cancel using their space because he text me on August 18 to tell me that he had double booked and now I'm left scrambling with the potential of canceling my event altogether. Losing time, money, and most of all trust with the community. An event that would have supported over 40 small local businesses, all because of this venue's lack of transparency and accountability. Booking a venue should be simple: clear terms, reliable communication, and mutual respect. None of that happened here. I cannot recommend this venue to any organizer or business owner looking for professionalism, unless you're looking to lose weight from stress. If you're an event planner, promoter, or any person who values professionalism, RUN. Avoid this new "crew" that is trying to revive the fab mab. They've affected my business, and they will do the same to yours.

The inside of Venue 550 looks like an entirely different country... something you would find in the movie Aladdin. This is an excellent venue for any event that requires high production like art or music shows. They have their own sound system, projection, and lighting. Lots of niches and caves for guests to sit, stand, and have their own conversations within small groups. The event I attended had several stations for food, alcohol, and video recording. There was no trouble with parts of the event getting too crowded and congested, which is why the unique floorplan of Venue 550 is great. The staff is top-notch too. I approached one of the staff members standing by the restrooms to ask about the venue. He was kind and helped me find the event manager Andrew. He could have easily had the "I'm just working here, leave me alone" attitude, but his service-oriented nature really contributed to the venue quality. The event manager Andrew was also walking around the event, so I approached him to ask for more information, which he emailed to me. I'm definitely considering having an event here in the near future! Or I'll just find another event happening here and attend that.

For $40.40, we felt that the portions were just right and that it was good value for the ingredients featured. Between the tiger shrimp and the pork belly, I thought the pork belly won. I just thought the combination of textures was on point! The pork belly was braised buttery and soft but featured this awesome crispy char on the edges accentuated by the chimichurri and the creamy lima bean puree. The shrimp, on the other hand, wasn't bad but it lacked a little something in my opinion. The cashew-peanut sauce was tasty but maybe a wedge of lime could have really put it over the top. For mains, we both enjoyed the salmon very much though parts of mine were just a hair underdone. The tamarind flavor was unique and I really enjoyed the squash puree with goat cheese on the side. Wished the sauteed spinach could have been dressed up a bit though. For dessert, I thought my panna cotta was executed better than the bunuelos but that the bunuelos had more potential. The panna cotta was luscious and full of vanilla bean flavor, but the dulce de leche got a little lost in the already sweet medjool date. The brittle on top of the panna cotta was amazing though! As for the bunuelos, they were triple chocolate sitting in a chocolate sauce so yeah....super rich! But luckily they paired it with an amarillo jelly that was so good. It brought some much needed sweetness and heat to the dish. All in all our restaurant week experience with a cocktail came to about $65/person after tip. Good for a once in a while treat!
