My partner and I had a wonderful time at the Illuminations event. The artwork was spectacular, and we even looked up a few of the artists to see if we could buy some of their work for our home. We also loved the themes of all the exhibits and how the information was presented in a concise yet informative way. Our favorite part of the exhibit was talking with the other patrons and discussing the themes and ideas presented. We also loved how interactive everything was, and especially the cocktails, which were delicious. We did a ride share to the event so I can not comment on parking availability. read more

The Foundry is a large space for gatherings. I attended the Illuminations event hosted by The Plenary. The exhibit was well thought out, with the intention of provoking thought and challenging our confirmation biases. Topics included: Tipping rooted in medieval times Diamonds are a huge marketing scheme There is no such thing as left and right brain Group think is also labeled "an imaginary" Loved the books that the exhibit drew inspiration from. Read a few already, but also added a bunch to my to-read list. The cocktail selection was also nice. Looking forward to more events of this kind. read more

I attended the "Illuminations" art and science exhibition and it was such an engaging experience. The focus was on current issues and how they shape our futures. It was thought-provoking and carefully laid out. I appreciated the artwork and the thoughtful narratives. My boyfriend and I ordered the drink, "Imagine That" which was gin, honey, lemon ginger and Prosecco. We enjoyed our drinks on the top floor absorbing the exhibition below. This is for the Juan Gabriel candlelight tribute. You can't do a tribute and not do his top hits. Many in the crowd were expecting an encore when they started breaking down the equipment. Hard to understand, it's like doing a Neil Diamond tribute and leaving out Sweet Caroline. Drinks were about $15 each and the pours precise. Adds up. We paid for A seating. Been here for Crunchyroll Anime Awards both in 2017 and this year, 2019, when it returned. It's a pretty large space. It feels like this used to be a giant warehouse that they converted into an event space. When you enter, you're greeted by a desk for coat check and guest check in, and a small bar. Once you go past this small room, this is where the main large party room is located. There's an even bigger bar, and in the back is a kiosk where you can order fast food, like fries and pizza and chicken nuggets (they aren't exactly the most appetizing IMHO). There's also a narrow spiral staircase that leads up a loft area. There's also another set of stairs that leads to a main second floor of the foundry. Depending on your event, you get to decide who gets to go up there. In my experience, it's restricted for event staff, and there would be security guards on the main floor at the stair entrance, and upstairs, there are couches, giant Hollywood-esque mirrors surrounded by lights, couches, and a piano. The whole space overall feels industrial, with a bit of vintage in the upper levels. If you plan on hosting an event, this is certainly a cool place to consider. read more

I've been to the Foundry on many occasions since it opened but it's been a few years since I was there last. Went last night for David Harness' (one of my favorite local DJs) yearly Mighty Real Thanksgiving eve party. Was really looking forward to it, only to find that the party was confined to the small front area and the huge event area was screened off. Seriously?? WTF?? My apt is bigger than that. It was really weird and awkward so I left after about 10 minutes. What a waste of money. $14 for an early bird ticket plus $30 in round trip Uber fees only to end up at home in front of the TV. My last experience at The Foundry wasn't anything to write home about either. I won't go back. read more

This is a pretty cool place and well worth the $5 cover, I'd say. The venue is pretty big with different sections for different games and tournaments which was pretty organized. I am not much of a gamer, but street fighter's definitely a game that's fun to play! We came here around 7pm on a Thursday and the place was pretty packed. The beer pong table of course, was pretty popular throughout the night. I'm not sure how many games there are, but I know there's Mario cart, super smash bros, a few versions of street fighter and rock band. Some games however, require you to use your own controller so be sure to bring one if you have one handy! There are also laptops available for you to play computer games and a few tables to sit and watch the game tournaments and get a few drinks and food from the bar. The food selection is not huge, so we ended up ordering the chicken tenders and fries for $9 I believe. You order at the bar area and pick up in another section in the back. The chicken tenders and fries were alright, just your typical tenders and fries. There is a $10 card minimum though so be sure to bring some cash! There's also some board games available in the front near the rock band area. Overall, it's a pretty cool place to chill or hang out with friends or even on a date ;) read more

I came here for Aw Naw country line dancing on a Wednesday evening. Once again, I'm ecstatic to see this side of the city transforming into something more than homeless encampments and shattered glass from thieves breaking into cars. There's no other place spacious enough to host such an event, as line dancing takes choreography and while some are learning as beginners, they may bump into you. This place has the perfect amount of dancing room, not to step on someone's foot, especially with drink in hand. On this kickoff night, our beautiful instructor Sarah Stokes taught us lessons, and we all got on the dance floor and embraced the moves. Line dancing is easy to learn, as it's repetitive, and it sure gives you a workout. When they played "Footloose", you bet I tore up the dance floor; although, there's a line dance routine to this, we didn't do it last night. I think it's too advance for some with lots of fancy footwork at a fast pace. I just love country nights, can't wait for more consistency every Wednesday or Friday. Saddlerack is way too far if ya know what I mean, especially for those who remember it being in San Jose, then it moved to Fremont. From SF, it's still a far trek. All the staff were great and attentive. It was a pleasure speaking to the owner Jordan and expressing my thoughts. The food is somewhat bland, nothing spectacular there. Their version of a mojito is mediocre; I'm happy they actually have mint, but another Yelper mentioned it's served as a garnishment - agreed. For $8, I'd rather get a real mojito on Market Street. I will stick with wines next time, as I'm not a beer drinker...can't go wrong with vino. Overall, I'm glad to see FSF doing great things and there's much potential for bigger and happening parties. Awesome new music venue! Wandered into this venue on a Thursday night because a friend of a friend was djing. I was really impressed with the decor, the sound system, super friendly staff, and size of the place. If your looking for an event venue for 50-700 people this is a great option. Multiple rooms, clean bathrooms, and good food options. Check their website to see what events they have going on weekly and check it out. Plenty of parking within a block. This place is pretty cool. People are pretty friendly so you can play with others. They let you join in. Rock and is fun. They have a lot of assortment of board games too. They projected a lot of video games too. The day we went, I believe they were having some type of tournament or that people were just super competitive. Very spacious and the ambiance is great. Love the high ceilings in the main room, and the wooden tables and bar stools to hang out around. There are two bars- one in the front room and one in the main room. You can choose between a variety of beers on tap (also in bottles), wine, and champagne. Came here for a holiday party and I think this is a great place for any large function. The only downside is there is only one bathroom. Located in SOMA so street parking isn't too difficult. Folsom Street Foundry is a dream come true. I wasn't sure what to expect the first time I came here, but my eyes opened wide in awe when I saw what this place was about on a Thursday night. After getting your ID checked and paying $5 cover charge, there is Rockband, a few card games, and a bar in the first room. Pretty chill. Keep walking into the bigger open space and prepare yourself to have the time of your life. This place has one of the coolest vibes in the city, and if you grew up with video games, the Foundry will make you feel at home. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. All video games are free-for-all and it's a great way to make new friends. There are tons of different games to play, from Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart to Jenga and Beer Pong. Drinks and food are very reasonably priced. I ordered the burger off the menu and tried some of my friend's meatball sandwich, both of which turned out to be delicious. And not like "passable" delicious... like REALLY good. I'm excited to keep coming back to Game Nights on Thursdays (also on Tuesdays) and share this experience with all my other video game loving friends! read more

Had a fantastic time here last night at the Folsom Fashion Night event sponsored by iCu. This was a perfect venue for such event that included run way fashion show, live painters working on fashion on fabrics, rappers and poets performing live, as well as filmmakers introducing their short films productions. The space is huge, the ambiance was cozy, the people hanging there were just chilling and the parking in the area was easy too. There are two bars there offering selected wines and beers but not a huge selection and no food menu here. My friend and I were totally enjoying the low key, unpretentious atmosphere here. I'm not much of a gamer... But this place is POPPIN' on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I came here around 8:30PM and it was JAMMED PACKED with gamers. There's a $5 cover which isn't too bad - but I'm really in shock with the couple of friends I have that come on a weekly basis. This is such a simple concept that's SO genius! They have tourneys for your hardcore gamers. So intense seeing other people bring in their own controls to play Street Fighter - like damn I look like a scrub using the one they provide and people know you're a scrub if you don't have your own control LOL. But nonetheless, everyone is super nice and they insist on having you join in on the fun (which actually means they're ready to beat you and feel good about it - jk but not really jk). Besides Street Fighter, they have Mario Kart, super old school games like Duck hunt, super smash... They also have board games if you're more into having some social time with your friends or new friends you make there. Oh yeah! They also have two beer pong tables which line gets super long where you gotta sign your name on a chalk board which sucks but it works, I guess. There's a bar and I've only tried 2 beers - one was called Heroin and it was pretty good if you're into bitter tasting beers. $7/drink which is pretty standard. Came here on Tuesday for their game night and was absolutely exciting. The size of the bar was much bigger than I had imagined and there were any game you could think of all around. There was guitar hero near the entrance as well as tables with piles of board/card games on each. As you venture further into the venue, you are led into a vast and spacious second room that seems to swallow you whole! The place is enormous. There are video games everywhere, stations for LOL and Heros of the storm, etc, street fighter, projectors that display Mario kart and WiiU Smash high up on the walls as well as old fashioned games that our generation has probably never heard of. Awesome. There are also two bars - on in the front as you enter the walkway ramp and one in the second room. The drinks here are pretty good - I ordered the drink with IPA and tequila plus grapefruit and lime (I don't remember the name, but its the last one of the list of specialty cocktails). They also host a Smash tournament on game night (Tuesday and Thursday) which people can enter with a fee and if they bring their controllers. There is an array of (I want to say) ten old fashioned cathode-ray tube TVs (to eliminate lag of course) with benches for people to play on. The food is also pretty amazing. They have a list of bar food, including burgers, sausage hot dogs, and grilled cheese, but I went with the chicken tenders and fries. It's a classic. The chicken was pretty juicy and made fresh. My only negative comment would be that the breaded exterior was a bit too thick and hard. Had a great time playing games (video and board) as well as discovering new games in the process. Definitely would come back with friends. Im a bit mixed about this menu. On initial entry it looks awesome. Bar and seating up front. Big floor and bar in back. Small lounge and bar upstairs. Was here for a holiday party and observed the following. The Reznor heater mid space has to be deflected distributed better. If youre anywhere near it, it's toasting you like a waffle. Trying to enjoy food and drink in the front area is impossible if people smoke right outside. It sucks in effortlessly and youre basically smoking everyones cigs at once. Pros: staff are nice, spacious and the weird video game, strange movie stuff theyve got going on is psychedelic cool. 3.5 stars read more

FOUNDRY IS AWESOME! If you like to play video games, imagine how much more fun it could be on a jumbo-tron screen with other like minded gamers?! I've had this place bookmarked the moment a friend told me about it and I ended up checking it out last week. First impression: from the outside, it looks like a warehouse. In fact, we almost missed it while looking for parking since its on the corner. When you get in, they do charge for cover which is $5. Not bad, you get access to whatever's inside. They have beer pong tables, multiple tvs for smash, I think street fighter was on there too. People streaming hearthstone on the jumbo tv, rocket league, Mario kart and guitar hero! There's also other tables of people playing board games. Oh, and of course it's also a bar where they serve alcohol. That doesn't mean raging though and blaming it on the alcohol lol Overall, this place is definitely going to be a go-to spot whenever I'm in the area. Tough thing is that they're only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, it gets really busy so sometimes you're waiting for a party to finish their game and they just keep continuing to play knowing there's a wait :( read more

I originally came to this place because of a Meetup that mentioned I could play Hearthstone here, and holy crap it's so much more than just that. When I first walked in on a Tuesday night, I was checked in by the bouncer (really friendly guy by the way), and paid $5 to get in. When I walked around, I saw a lot of people playing Rock Band, SSBM (there's a tourney going on every Tuesday), and a whole lot of other games I wasn't familiar with. There were a good amount of laptops set up just in case you want to play things like SC2, League, etc. The place is really cool because you can pretty much go to any open spot, sit down with strangers at a random game, and have a blast because you realize it's the first time any of those people have ever played that game. I met a few new people that way because we were all wondering why we were playing as ducks with guns trying to kill each other. Still, we all had a lot of fun laughing at the randomness of it. I'm only really sad by the fact that I didn't find out about this place sooner! I always try to come by for the Hearthstone tournaments, but if I ever have free time I'd just come by to hang out too. read more

My first yelp review/account initiation was due to one of the most outstanding services and total quality of product that I have ever received at a restaurant/bar, but I think I deleted it somehow (Miro's - Palm Springs). I have not done another restaurant review since, because back then I decided to only do positive reviews of superior establishments and not contribute to lackluster reviews. That said, my second restaurant/bar review has taken about six years, and it now comes forth due to the consistent experiences that I have had at the Folsom Street Foundry (FSF). Sure, FSF seems like a standard bar with its trademark decor and the staples of the alcohol industry, but the bar is actually an ever-evolving establishment, keeping a unique dichotomy of a guaranteed place to get what I want, but also a place that keeps pace with San Francisco's dynamic environment. The venue attains this at its foundation in general, but also with varying events to which the Foundry decorates uniquely for each. I've been to a country music night of line dancing with a professional instructor, the Folsom Street Fair (which seems to be the unofficial watering hole of the event), Video Game nights, black market swap meets, evening music jams, beer tastings, and even a pro chess tournament! The steady and random events keep this place as one of my go-to establishments in SOMA, and in SF-proper in general. The front lounge has even had a robot deliver my drinks when ordered from an app! The kitchen has changed its menu for constant improvement (even though they were all good), and I look forward to the most recent change with all of the munchies! I am stoked that they kept their fresh, made-to-order mini pizzas as well! To summarize, the Foundry is a place that I've been to enough times that it feels like my local pub with familiar faces, yet each time that I am en route, I get excited to see what is new! Attended Back to Black, a 20's themed invite event here last night. The venue was relatively nice, with ample space for vendors on the main floor. There is a good sized bar here (with very cool bar stools on large metal springs) that serves a large variety of bottled beers along with 6 draft options. There is a lobby and also a small upstairs floor which overlooks the main floor. While nothing stood out as spectacular, I would attend events here in the future, especially the game nights that I've heard get hosted here on Tuesday and Thursday nights. read more

I've only come on the Tuesday Game Nights (first time I paid $5 cover, second time $10) but the venue is ginormous and has a LOT of options for entertainment. I don't play video games but I came with some coworkers to cheer another one on in the Smash tournament, and we spent most of the night playing beer pong or hanging by the bar chatting and watching the console games being projected onto the walls. I've only ordered drinks there (no food) but I didn't find the service amazing. Some of the bartenders were really friendly while others made it seem like you were inconveniencing them just by ordering a drink. I guess it's because the place is really chill or because it was game night, but it's not my scene. It is a very neat experience and I love the interior/decoration/high ceilings of the bar. read more

Of course, you don't have to play anything. You can hang out and watch all the fun. The drinks are good, the vibe and community is even better. This place is pretty epic. From what I've heard, the events changes regularly, but when I went, it was for the SF Game Night (Tues and Thursday, I think) and there was giant projectors of Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, and Rocket League, along with dozens of smaller TVs of Street Fighter, Tekken....and more Super Smash Brothers. I especially loved the dedicated Rock Band set-up and tables of board games. The vibe was really good, too. Everyone there seemed like good people looking to have a good time. It was pretty easy to find someone to sing the chorus of Tenacious D's "Master Exploder" on Rock Band. Haha With food and liquor on hand, too, I could definitely see myself coming back and spending hours and hours hanging out. read more

Picture an area with all your favorite video games. Now picture all those video games being played on about 30 TV's and projected onto the walls in a huge open area. Sounds awesome already right? Now add alcohol. Best place ever right? You can't go wrong at all with that combination. Beer + video games + social interaction = Folsom Street Foundry which is my favorite math equation ever, which is a lot coming from a guy that hates math. And in the immortal words of Billy Mays, wait there's more! You've also got a fine selection of board games and card games to play as well. Wanna get your tabletop game on? You can get your tabletop game on. They've also got beer pong tables and cups for you, if you wanna relive those college garage party days. Cannot wait to come back to this place. Right now the only drawbacks are that it's only open on very limited days and times. If it was like a weekend kinda thing, you might have to start charging me rent here, but seeing as it's only on a few weekdays, it's gonna be hard to make it out here and actually have a fun time while being responsibly early for work the next day.
