I always knew Spitfire was on the waterfront but just assumed it was a coffee shop open in the summer for the harbourfest etc. But I was proved wrong! An American style bbq joint with modern exterior and chunky wooden interior - it's don't out well. Friendly staff, quick service and suitable music it's a pretty good place. Toilets were a big let down but let's not be too picky. I had calamari to start which was amazing, a simple butter, lemon and pepper sauce complimented the fresh squid so well on a bed of baby spinach. For main I had a double bacon cheeseburger and chips, a bit dry. Tasted like the 30p cheeseburgers we used to throw on the bbq's. Done to death, had to smother in bbq sauce which subsequently burnt my mouth. A simple burger bun, could almost be described as stale after being used to the moist brioche buns of Chomp & GBK. My friend had the St.Louis ribs which were insane!!! Three little bones in a massive piece of meat, decent ratios. Good chips and fresh slaw was a perfect match but we had to share the ribs because there was so so much! I'd recommend a salad too because all of that meat can become a bit much and needed a bit more sauce. I'd rate my food, toilets and service 2/3 stars. But the ribs took it up to a solid 3/4. But I can't give a full 4, not yet - maybe next time.

BBQ is trending in the UK at the moment. And I'm not talking the sort where you burn meat (and…read morestill manage to undercook it on the inside) in your back garden, I'm talking 12 hour... slow roasted... pulled pork... Y'know - the kind where you have buzzwords trending on twitter and drooltastic photos appearing on here. It's THAT sort of BBQ that you can get at Grillstock. I was recommended Grillstock by our local BBQ expert, Ahmed Kage (if you haven't come across Rib Nights and you're a fan of meat, you HAVE to check it out). He had bigged up the restaurant as one of the best places to get BBQ in the UK - so we knew we had to make a date to go and see for ourselves. It was just lucky that we ended up passing through Brizzle on our way to Cornwall for our Honeymoon! We had read on the website that you can't book - but it was open from 11:30am in the week. We rocked up and arrived almost bang on opening time to grab some early lunch on our travels. We were greeted warmly and seated straight away. As it was early on a Monday, we didn't have any problems getting a seat... But I imagine on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday evening - it would be wise to get there near opening to avoid a lengthy wait for a table. After a quick look at the menu we quickly decided to go for the sharing platter. For £30 it had nearly every meat on the menu on it and looked like the right choice to try everything. I can confirm it certainly WAS the right choice! With everything from a full rack of ribs to chicken wings and pulled pork and beans, it was huge! You could sensibly feed three with the amount of meat, 'slaw and fries on offer, but we did manage most of it (with only half of ribs taken away in their awesome packaging for later devouring). All of the meat was totally fantastic. Tender, deliciously seasoned and cooked to perfection - it was some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Our meal (with a couple of fizzy drinks) came to under £40 with some food to takeaway. We didn't eat for nearly 24 hours afterwards either. If perfectly cooked meat at a reasonable price floats your boat - I recommend a trip to Grillstock!

I finally managed to get in there a few weeks back and was greeted by 4 people standing up and leaving, which meant we could sit straight down. The waitress gave us the basic but mouth watering menus and I decided on the Smokestack Burger. I really wanted to try the Grand Champion challenge, but I knew I wasn't man enough. The restaurant is made up of one table in the middle and a bar at the end, with open kitchen behind. Drinks wise they serve Orchard Pig cider, obviously, as it's the same guy owns Orchard Pig and Grillstock (what a legend) and a few other soft drinks. The food comes out on metal trays with nice branded paper underneath. The burger was delicious. Not the best in Bristol, but a very decent burger all the same. Our friends had the hot dogs and the brisket; the sauce around their mouths and instant silence said it all! All in all a decent place, Grillstock. There is A LOT of competition in Bristol for BBQ, Grill, Pulled Pork style dining - but these guys are the originators!

It does a very good deal on a 'stop the clock' idea, which means you can sit and eat for two hours, from the moment of your first order. The cost is £15.80 which can't be bad. Personally I recommend the Bulgogi, thin sliced BBQ steak. Ushikata! I have hesitated in recommending Teppan Oriental because its very appeal is that all the customers are apparently Korean, Japanese or Chinese and this adds to the atmosphere...

You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

I do sway towards chicken on most menus and usually it's a choice between Hunters Chicken and Piri Piri Chicken, but this place has a much better selection.. I was torn between a few! The presentation was really nice, and not too much food, which I like.... But you may have room for pudding if you have a bigger appetite! The prices are fairly reasonable.. £13.50 for each main and £6 for olives. Wine always shocks me as it costs more for a glass than I'd pay for a bottle in the shops, but that's standard! £6.95 a large glass. I'd definitely go back... I guess the 'wow' factor of five stars was missing but I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in Cabot Circus.

There's two special quirks about this building that are especially also worth checking out; 1) The clock has an extra minute hand! That's apparently a remnant of the train friendly Victorian days, when Bristol had its own time zone that was different from Greenwich Medium time which is what the London trains would run. 2) if you look up towards the ceiling in the main hall, the sculptures of the heads all look towards the middle, except for two which are turning their heads to look at each other. Rumour has it this is because those two women were the wife and mistress of the building's architect! I very much enjoyed checking out this market! Yelp 161/ 2019
