As everyone who works in the office knows, when the boss suggests taking the team for "a lunchtime meeting" work is off for the rest of the day. So when he offered to take up to Coal for a bite to eat and just ONE drink there was an audible 'woop' heard across our desk. I'd heard great things about Coal and couldn't wait to try it for myself. From the moment we got there, our attentive waitress was at hand to seat us and serve us as quickly as possible. The lunch time menu is a snip at £6.95 for two courses and large portions. As a vegetarian I found the options fairly limiting but the nachos and pasta I ordered were tasty and filling without being too heavy. I also had a rather lovely Mojito, which made the afternoon go with a bit of a swing. The full menu looks just as tasty, and I can't wait to go back and try it.

On my first visit to Coal Grill and Bar the other week I was actually very impressed (was quite sceptical because it looked like a big warehouse and it is a chain) The staff were friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble and the atmosphere was a lot better than I thought it would be. Lots of big comfy sofas, that I'm not a big fan of sitting it when I'm eating, but did make the place feel very warm and inviting. The food and drink were most pleasing and the steak I had was cooked to perfection, very tender and succulent. They have a pretty decent bar too with a wide selection of bottled and draft lagers. It is a little pricey though and for the money possibly not quite worth it, but good if you find yourself flush and money is no object (not sure that's ever the case for most people).

The food is always top-notch and the waiting staff know they're stuff. The set-price menu is always good value and offers a more limited choice which should suit most tastes. The service is quick, friendly and welcoming putting you at ease from the moment you walk in the door. The selection of local ales is top notch and the wine menu offers something for everyone. The restaurant is on the top floor and has really nice views of the river (and all of the activities that go along with that) and is a perfect backdrop as the sun sets over Bristol. Once the sun has gone down the ambiance and atmosphere here really shines and the (usually full) tables provide a charming and warm hum with everyone chatting, laughing and having a good time. I really cannot recommend this place enough, especially if you're looking for something a little more special than the ordinary.

We chose from the set evening menu in the upstairs restaurant, at £18 for 2 courses and £21.50 for three. They will swop vegetarian items for the meat or fish set items on request. The menu is modern European, and features items such as ham hock and roast rabbit, all decorously served. Puddings include items such as lavender panna cotta - simply to die for. Service was excellent and the general consensus was that we would happily come back here: most of us had two courses, which, with house wine (a bottle between two on average), water and service came to £28 a head.

Our dinner itself was brilliant, yet not overly expensive, and my starters consisting of sliced duck meat was exquisite, very tasty. I succombed to a "moules-frites" main course, and while the mussels were well cooked and tasty, I have to say that the chips were not truly the french fries you'd get in Brussels, the mussel haven... Anyway, the home-made mayo and tartare sauces were great, and aside from the surprise of seeing my colleague getting served her ordered of a bread platter (I'd never seen that, ever before), the night was a great one. Today I finished my other colleague's spaghetti, which we took away at the end, and they reminded me "Go back to Bristol !"

Downstairs is a cafe/bar and delicatessen and up stairs is the restaurant. I've never actually eaten in the main restaurant as the food served in cafe is of a very high standard and there is always a great selection that changes frequently. The Deli also sells a lovely selection of fresh bread, cheese, cakes and other great food. It's a great place to buy gifts or create a food hamper. Today I went for a tart with celeriac remoulade. I can't remember what the tart was called but it was delicious. My mum had the fish and chips and which is a Bordeaux quay fav for her and it didn't disappoint!

Corn Street's current incarnation as home to Bristol's lager louts and hen nights means that these buildings have turned into bar, pubs and restuarants of varying quality. 31 Corn Street is one of these. The When you come in your eyes are drawn to the exceedingly high ceiling, which is still looks beautifully adorned despite the weird blue lighting they have. The restaurant has decorated with a bit of an eye to the place with lots of leather sofas and a smart, long bar. I was drawn to the place by the £5 for a main course offer. This is a fantastic deal if you can find it; they could easily get away charging twice that for the quality of the food on offer. The steak in particular is a bargain for five pounds. A couple of things really let this place down. Firstly, the music is fa too loud. When you in you feel a bit like you're being hit in the face with it. Easily solved, but I'm not sure I'll go back until they do sort this out. Second, when I went there they had an appalling comedy night on. Three guys went on, not raising more than half a dozen laughs out the place all night long. Last, it's a bit empty. This isn't always a problem for me in clubs, but the grandness and size of the place means it doesn't feel right being empty. A few glaring faults, but the potential to be a decent restaurant.

After visiting the bar (very cheaply if I must say), our group sat upstairs, around twelve in total overlooking the rest of the restaurant. From what I can remember, I had some kind of fish dish (clearly not very memorable as it was only a few weeks ago). The menu was quite diverse, but nothing seemed to be particularly mouth watering by the sound of it. The night was enjoyable for the people I was with, rather than the food I was eating, but it was very cheaply priced.
