    Review Highlights - Grillstock Smokehouse

The pulled pork is delightful, fries are great, burnt ends can be hit or miss but when good they are really good.

This was my fifth visit to one of my favourite restaurants. I deliberately travel out of my way to…read moreeat here. The restaurant has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and serves up an American-style BBQ menu. Portion sizes are big and the quality of the meat is never in doubt. On this visit I discovered their chicken wings, which have to be the best chicken wings I've had in the UK, and I'm struggling to remember any wings sampled in the U.S. that would beat them! The secret is definitely in the coating - I'm just gutted I didn't discover them sooner! Their southern fried chicken burger is my favourite burger from here, however unfortunately on this occasion they served it with blue cheese on top rather than the regular cheese I asked for. No problem though, they were more than happy to make a fresh burger which was just as delicious as always. The Surf, Bird & Turf Combo and BBQ Ribs are also great choices. My biggest plus about this place though is their fries; the best fries I've ever eaten. Consistently awesome on every visit, beautifully crispy and well-seasoned. Big 5 stars from me as I've had 5 fantastic meals here, and they have Brahma on tap which is a bonus.

It's a South African BBQ hybrid, and it has a good relaxed feel. Dark wood, and low lighting. If smoking was allowed inside, there'd be a hazy glow to the place that would be perfect. And I don't even smoke. The Drinks. They do smoked cocktails. They're arguably marmite, but I love them. (Just so we're clear, they're not marmite cocktails. You just either love them or hate them.) I had a smoked old fashioned the first time I visited, and it tasted great. I love anything smoked, so smoked cocktails were new to me. The smoked marguerita is even more smoky - arguably too smoky for some, but it all depends on your taste preference. The Food. The second time I visited I had one of the burgers. Immense, with a literal bucket of fries, I was loving it. Until my friend's rack of ribs arrived. A slab of meat, glistening and glazed. I didn't make the same mistake when I visited last night. If you've only ever had baby back ribs or ribs at home and are left feeling disappointed at the meat/bone ratio, relax. There's more meat here than you know what to do. I shared the medium ribs with a friend (£14.95) and, with fries, onion rings, and smoked beans, was more than enough. I am hesitant as to whether the sides were made on site, but you go to Spitfire BBQ for the ribs. The sides are just to break up the meat. If you have a hankering for meat, then head to Spitfire BBQ. They do meat well.

They are also one of the cheapest meal options in St Nicks Market at around £2.80 for an amazing sausage baguette with leeks, onions, mustard and red (eugh) or brown (yay!) sauce. You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

Ones to try:: Lucifer - whooo mamma hot and spicy but very tasty St Nicks 1743 - their own secret blend is actually my favourite - quite traditional pork and herbs but full of flavour Gloucestershire Old Spot - from the spottiest of pigs and a nice basic sausage if you don't like anything too fancy Works out pretty cheap considering the size and density of the sausage too. If you want to get stuffed by sausages (OK I'll stop now), then they also have an on-site bbq for a sausage and mash for lunch - for big appetites only!
