This grubby old pub plays host to what it calls the "alternative music" scene in Bristol, and…read moreyou'll have gathered from other reviews that this is specifically metal and rock music. I am truly surprised about this; I visited during the day for a lunchtime beer, and it felt no more exciting or "alternative" here than any other old man pub I've ever been to. There were just blokes sitting about drinking pints. But, I suppose I was just there at the wrong time of day, before the pub transformed into its nighttime altar ego. As Will P says, don't be put off by the identity of this pub as a live rock music venue. The actual music goes on downstairs in the basement, and upstairs is just a pub, and it's in quite a good location, tucked inside St Nicholas Markets. I was looking for refreshment in an old pub during a market shopping day, and that's what I got. So, a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde venue, it seems. But that's not a bad thing. It's in my list of "Pubs Plus"; that is, pubs that offer something over and above the basic pub experience. There are a few like this in Bristol, and it's always quite hard to tell what these pubs are hiding behind their old beer barrels.

Both stellar and I would get another round if we had time. Happy hour is £2.50 pints - can't get better than that. Parking around the building was atrocious, to say the least. Take public transit if you can. T took us 30 minutes to get out of the tinyiest parking garage known to man. Other than that, I hope we stop by again if we're ever in Cardiff.

The staff here are incredibly friendly and helpful. Although not on the menu, we asked if we could sample all the beers they make which was no issue at all and all surprisingly cheap. They had a variety of beers from light mango beer, through to chocolate beer and even a 'black' beer. The smell from each beer was incredible and the bartender told us the reasoning behind each recipe and the flavours we should be able to taste with each glass. To line our stomachs as we drank we ordered a couple of things off the menu. We had the sharing starter which was smoked salmon , tomatoes, Parma ham and goats cheese on ciabatta followed by the thermidore mussels. Both of which were very good, the sauce on the mussels was Devine, incredibly rich and creamy ! They do have quite a limited menu here (mainly mussels, pizza and salad) but what they do have looks and tastes brilliant. They have a great open kitchen with an impressive pizza oven and each pizza looked incredible. I'd definitely come back here when we have a little more time and spend a bit longer trying to beers and taking in the atmosphere. Some days of the week they even have the distillers in operating the kit while you eat and drink which I am sure would be most entertaining ! Great place 4/5

Was told because I didn't mention this until the plates were cleared/I had eaten everything else nothing could be done, but it was clear from looking at the plate the chicken had not been eaten (and that it was burnt!). I didn't expect the whole meal for free, just a few quid off and an apology - was rudely told that the manager said nothing could be done. At this point it became clear that the staff couldn't care less so didn't bother to take it any further. Poor service, poor (overpriced) food. Would not recommend

The great decor immediately catches your eye from the giant glistening beer kettles to the raised ceilings and high top tables. Brewhouse does produce their own beer so you can walk up and view the production area very freely. The wait staff were friendly but did need to be flagged down at times as they lingered around the bar area talking. As far as the beers, the 'Colonel Jack' IPA was great as was the 'Tin Man" Pale Ale. For food my brother and I shared the 'Blistered Padron Peppers' first and really enjoyed them. A great snack item while sipping on a nice beer, they were plentiful and really tasty! I went with the 'Wild Mushroom Risotto with Chicken', risotto being an item I find hard to resist, which I found to be OK, but I've definitely had much better. The fact that it was served in half a roasted butternut squash was unique but the risotto was over cooked and the chicken much too dry. My brother kept it lite and ordered the 'Chicken Caesar Salad' and had no complaints. Overall a very cool looking place in the Cheltenham Brewery Quarter with great beer, a laid back vibe and a variety of food options. I would definitely give it another shot next time I'm in town.
