Although the chain has a reputation for being a bit down market but it is perfectly fine in the shop. Very clean and well stocked, and a good layout. Just avoid the beers stacked around the floor!! The prices vary yes it is cheap for spirits and also for large crates of beers and cider but with regard to wine and bottled beer I would look out for the offers. It's not more expensive than other shops but if you are looking for something in particular it might be worth looking around. It was about a 20 minute walk from my mates house and incredible to think that you can get from St George to somewhere so lovely in a few minutes. Not that St George isn't lovely, but, um, you know what I mean! We got to the pub and had to call them to get someone to pick us up on the boat - which is the only way to get to them from the other side of the river. We sat outside and luckily for us (maybe not for some) there was some background music from a 40th party at the other side of the garden - which I loved, but some might not! The bar menu was pretty basic, but not short of your standard largers, beers, ciders and top shelf spirits. Food wise the menu was good. Nothing fancy but a decent selection of pub grub: burgers, wraps, steak, chips etc all nicely cooked. There were quite a few dogs in the garden which again I really liked. I don't have a dog but if I did then I'd definitely take it for a walk and 'spontaneously' stop here for the rest of the afternoon! I walked to the bar at one point and there was a mother duck with 4 little chicks running around the garden. I'm used to living in the city so I'm definitely not used to that; it was great! I hope summer never ends so I can go back to Beese's and sit in the garden every weekend!

Best of all, I like hopping on the Conham water ferry after my lunch, fare just 25 pence across the river and dogs go free! What's nice about the riverside cosiness of it is the history. The old Mrs Beese opened it in 1846, the captain of the ferry was Mr Beese. The decking area is chillax central, and they'll even erect a marquee for your wedding reception. Aww.

They offer a variety of 'cruises' ranging from a short trip around the floating harbour, a trip under Clifton Suspension Bridge and back, and even all the way to Bath. The trips themselves up and down the river are really very pleasant. It is a very good way (especially for tourists) to get a good view of the slightly nicer parts of Bristol without too much exercise! Prices are fairly reasonable, with a trip to Bath costing £22 for an adult. Each boat offers a full bar and a toilet. Boats only seem to run weather permitting, and once you have arrived at the ferry it is a little unclear when the boats actually run. It would therefore be advisable to ring in advance.
