This review is long overdue since I have been coming here for a while. I love this place. I usually order to-go after my workouts, and they have a convenient place near the entrance where you can order and pay for your food. I go once a week or once every other week, and every time the food is consistently excellent. The portions are big, and one meal usually lasts 2-3 meals for me. Everything I have tried is really tasty, and have never had a bad dish. The one big standout is their dessert (if you have room for it) - I've tried their rice pudding and carrot pudding. I am not a huge sweets person, but I LOVE these dishes. I've actually started to mix the carrot pudding in with plain oatmeal and it is delicious. And the staff are very nice and very conscious of how long patrons are waiting for their food. I've also never had an issue with having incorrect or missing food. Went here the month they opened had delicious chaat with mango and fried spinach today it was gross old chewy spinach, mostly onions, old cucumber, hardly any tamarind sauce zero care given. Had butter chicken, tasted like Campbells tomato soup and they just added jaggery, half and half and a tiny bit of spices it was gross. Chicken was chewy and dry it was as if they marinated it for an hour and then baked the chicken breast, it was not right. Not worth the price of this dish... $18!.... Won't be back again. read more

Craving south indian dosas. Usual haunts have considerably gone down in taste and quality. Thanks to a recent Yelp review, decided to give Spicelife a try. Ordered takeout directly from their website. Not easy to pack Indian food without creating a mess but this was neatly packed and delivered all the way from Alexandria to Arlington. Another visit to my now fav spot around the corner! Brought a collegue from work and the place was already busy at lunch time. I advised my american friend to try the masala dosa, i explained its like a large savory crepe. He got it mild and when it arrived he said you were not kidding its huge, everyone there, their eyes popped out and I told them it was masala dosa. He absolutely loved it, finished every morsel. I tried the paneer tikka masala it comes with fluffy white fragrant basmati rice, the paneer was so soft and the curry delicious, i was so hungry finished every morsel too! This has got to be the best Indian restaurant I ever been to. My friends and I ordered several dishes to give a proper review and I was more than impressed. I understand it's not a fancy Indian restaurant like Rasika in DC but Spicelife is much better. The spices , flavor and spice level are all that you'd except and spice life gave it. Order at the counter; they bring your food to you. Food came quite quickly. She got the Alu Tikki Chat (mild) - $9. Ostensibly an appetizer, was really a meal itself. Didn't skimp on the potato or chick peas. Quite good, we both easily would order again. I got the ($13) gobi Manchurian (medium). Again, decent size amount of crispy fried cauliflower. A bit more heat than i expected - not painful, but definitely some mouth warmth. As also split a ($9) plain dosa - yuuuge. Quite good but next time we'd get a potato dosa or some other filling. Big plus: actual plates and metal silverware. Just under $35, before tip, and we got a stuffed amount of tasty food. A darn solid 4.5 fast-casual experience. We shall return. read more

Dosa in Alexandria?!?! Yes please!! Had a great experience from the minute we walked in the door from the friendly and great service, cute decor and great casual vibe. Food was delicious! The pakoras were amazing and came with this delicious mint/coriander chutney that I could eat with anything. We had rava dosas and butter chicken which were promptly devoured. One thing to note for the moms of little ones who can't handle too much spice - they were able to provide us with pakoras and butter chicken that were mild but still flavorful for my little guy! Fantastic to have such good Indian food close by! The restaurant is immaculate, the service is warm and friendly, and the food was terrific. When I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic Naan, the person at the counter asked for the level of spice. Since it's a new place, I went with the "safe" option and ordered it mild. It was delicious! Terrific complexity of flavors and spices, and very little heat (so if you come with someone who really doesn't like spice, this would be a good option). In fact it had the tiniest hint of sweetness to it that was just lovely. Next time I'll be more brave! The rice is also worth noting. Such a simple thing, but it's so often done badly, and this rice was perfectly fluffy! The food was served nice and hot, and in fact when I went to put my leftovers in a container, it was still steaming toward the bottom of the dish. Welcome to the neighborhood! Family went to try out the new place and carried out a Masala Dosa for me. These are rice and lentil crepes best enjoyed hot and fresh. Taste was ok, it had some spice mixture sprinkled inside, which other places don't usually do. The accompanying 'sambhar' lentil and veggie stew was very thin and watery, the flavor kind of diluted. The two chutneys that came with were also ok. But all said, they just opened and I'm happy to have a dosa place nearby. read more

Love coming to this restaurant. It's a woman run business and staff are friendly and helpful, they have stickers for the kids too. Their food tastes very authentic and homely, we have been there a couple of times now and tried their garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, chicken tikka, Channa bhatura, samosas, and they are all fantastic, they are consistent with their recipes, spice level and portions. Only issue is that the place is very clean and they are constantly cleaning the tables with some type of cleaner that smelled awful and you notice it as soon as you get into the restaurant. This may be the best Indian food in the city of Alexandria. We tried a new to us curry - Malabari - it was complex and savory, we enjoyed the mustard seeds, coconut flavor and richness. The butter chicken was also very flavorful and had a cardamom note that was pleasant and a little different. Both sauces tasted like they had been simmering away all day. Friendly and fast, very good food as well. I got the Gobi Manchurian and honestly it might be the best I've ever had, and I get it every time I grab Indian food. The mango lassi was also, quite possibly, the best I've ever had. I also ordered the chicken seekh kabob which was decent but didn't blow me away like the other parts of the meal. I like the chicken tikka marsala a lot but they do put a lot of onions and peppers in it. I'm not a big onion person so I pick them out. I have been in search of Masala Dosas since I lived near a vegetarian Indian restaurant in Rochester NY in the 90s where I became a huge fan of dosas. Not many Indian restaurants offer them that I have found over the years. We just moved nearby and came upon Spicelife while exploring our local grocery options and a nearby plaza.. Just picked up 2 Masala Dosas and a Mango Lassi to-go and ran home to dive in. Soooo delicious! Giant dosa cooked perfectly even in a to-go order, delicious insides packaged separately so as to not get the dosa soggy plus 2 chutneys and sauce to add. Spicelife is my new favorite place! The kind service was also lovely. She included my favorite tamarind sauce and made a fabulous mango lassi. Cant recommend more highly. Also great prices. Im looking forward to trying other dishes as well in the future but I see many more dosas in my future! read more
