Very few restaurants can pull off high quality Indian and Thai under the same roof. And keep it going over years, even after Covid and even after a major change of location and downsizing. Spice Route makes it seem easy. The owner mentioned how tough it has been trying to keep up despite inflation and the supply chain shortage, but you wouldn't be able to tell while slurping down the menu. Can't go wrong. Check it out. One word of caution, the kadai paneer was really spicy (it's in the restaurant name, duh) so ask for mild if you are not feeling adventurous. read more

Well, things have gone downhill at Spice Route (which is now Spice Kitchen) in East Stroudsburg. Used to think very highly of the restaurant, but the last time I used them, I had ordered out. I ordered a chicken dish. When I got home what I had in front of me was not chicken, but rather a seasoned bread dumpling of some kind. I live more than 45 minutes away, so I chose not to head back. My thought is that if they DIDN'T have any more chicken in the kitchen, they should have told me to choose a different item. Instead, I feel that they've lost a previously loyal customer. Try it out. The ambiance is okay, the service is friendly and the food is pretty good. Regarding the menu I'd lean to the to the Indian side first, then Indo-Chinese, and then Thai side of the menu. Our Pad Thai was a bit saucy, and the noddles were a bit undercooked, but to be fair rice noodles get mushy quickly so it's forgivable. The Hakka noodles and gobi Manchuria were great. I'll start by saying It's hard to judge fairly as all I ordered was the hot and Sour soup to go. This was by far the worst soup I have ever had. It was like spicy beef broth and soy sauce with a few shriveled up pieces of tofu and some shredded carrots that was it. If they didn't have the soup made they should have told me I would have went next door to the Chinese buffet and got it to go and probably at half the price. I'm honestly scared to go back which is a shame as I love Indian cuisine. I would have given it one star but I didn't try anything else so I threw the extra one in. But it was EXTREMELY distasteful. Very friendly staff, excellent food. I had the chicken tikka masala which was so flavorful and the right amount of heat. My dining companion had the butter chicken, again excellent. We dined here while on vacation. I was hoping to have a good experience, but I'm sorry to say we didn't. I appreciated that we were seated within a few minutes of arriving. However, despite placing our order and having it repeated back, the order was not accurate. Nothing is worse than having another person in your group's food order forgotten. By the time it came out, we were ready to leave. The taste of the food needs improvement. Aside from the pineapple fried rice and chicken fried rice, everything else was less than satisfactory. Perhaps they should consider reducing the items on the menu and focusing on good, quality dishes. My shrimp pad Thai was brought to me without shrimp. I notified the waitstaff. It was returned to me with more sauce and tasted sweet. This was the last straw. All in all, I was such a disappointing meal. I feel it to be one of the worst. My family and I were on vacation and were searching for "quality Asian" food. Well we found all of the above: Indian, Chinese and Thai wrapped into one. I am writing to give this restaurant a 5 star rating across several categories: cuisine, service, and ambience. We began with appetizers: Manchurian Cauliflower, Veggie Samosas, Lentil soup and Veggie dumplings. Next, we feasted on Chicken Vindaloo, Lamb Rojash, and Curried Goat. We completed our soiree with deserts: Mango Ice Cream, and Mango Cheesecake. We were greeted and attended to by one of the owners and served by two courteous gentlemen. Used to love Spit Route when it was in its previous location across from the theater. I thought they went downhill, but the original owner told me that they'd moved to Stroudsburg PA and that someone ELSE bought the old location. Well, that would explain the drop in quality. Brought it home. Guess what? They were both made with BEEF! %&@×! I called politely and mentioned the issue. Guy who answered, knew my order. He insisted that they used lamb. I said no, this wasn't lamb. *He insisted otherwise. I wasn't interested in arguing. There's a distinct difference between lamb and beef. Maybe they were OUT of LAMB?? Still, IF that was true, I would have accepted BEEF as a substitute. It's a great good mood with food when you're told TRUTH about BEEF vs. LAMB. STILL, I would go back. Large parking lot but busy, was seated quickly, server was kind of quiet but helpful in explaining certain dishes we were not as familiar with. Food was made quickly and was very good! This place has the closest Indian taste , I have had in upstate New York. The butter chicken is authentic to a T. Recommended dishes : Cauliflower Manchurian, Chicken Pepper Fry for starters. Our baby also tried curry for the first time, and we think he is now a lifelong fan -- the service was excellent, especially with a baby (high chair, changing pad in the restroom, etc). I would highly recommend this dish. The flavors and crunchiness is excellent. The samosa chat waas also really tasty. I wish they'd put some extra yogurt and tamarind sauce on top. It's all mixed in.
