Are you looking for spices? As a matter of fact, the first thing you smell when you open the door is the spices. The smell of cinnamon, ginger, a mixture of clove and cardamom. The aroma is so inviting and warm. These are some of my favorite spices. The store sells Indian grocery items. We got a warm welcome from the owner. He asked if we needed help. We asked for the spice aisle. He showed us where they were. We walked around the store looking at all their products. It was fun to look at chips, teas, pastries, and candies, along with a variety of other items. My friend and I came to get supplies to make homemade chia tea. They have a wide variety of spices, including whole, powdered, and seeds. Spices are sold in a variety of packages ranging from large to medium. I purchased a large bag of green cardamom for my Swedish baking. Of course, I will store the majority of it in my freezer. It was way cheaper here than from Amazon. The popular Red Label tea is sold here in small or large quantities. I would like to go back and purchase some crackers and some of the cookies to have with my tea. I'm no stranger to the Spice rack market. I used to get sent here for for hair beauty products and special curry spices that they offer here. I craved all kinds of curry with my last pregnancy and made a yellow or red curry at least once a week with help from the spice rack Market. They offer such a variety here. You'll have to check it out for yourself. Service is always great and their prices are very competitive. They carry a lot of my items that I purchase at the international markets, but save here if I make the drive across town. I'm super happy with my latest finds here and look forward to returning when I begin to run low. read more

I have come here a few times with my husband (he's Indian I'm Mexican) And he usually knows where everything is and what we are looking for... So I've never had to ask the staff for help. I have always felt a weird vibe from the older lady staring at us like she is annoyed that we are there... But I've never really said anything because we are usually in and out... I had to come in here by myself the other day and let me tell you she is so rude and just grunts and gives me the evilest look ever. The man that was there stalking the shelves who I haven't really seen before was also there and he's rude as well, but easier to ignore because he did not have to help me. The picture I am posting with this is of me sitting in the car waiting for my husband because I don't feel comfortable going in there! I have told him that we need to go to a different Indian store because these people are so rude. It's just always closer to where we do our grocery shopping, but I am really hoping this is my last time here. I hope these people are not the owners and if the owner see this, I really hope that you can tell these people that they need to be nicer and they need to be welcoming whether you are Indian or not. This is an authentic Indian grocery with everything to support that wonderful cuisine. I was looking for some cumin, the local big box store was out, this had plenty, smallest size was 7 oz but it was still cheaper than the 2 oz portion you get everywhere else. This is a great little store, understood construction at the moment inside but for the local community a wonderful grocery store with all things Indian. It was 5 stars because the prices we low for quality spices. I'm gonna come back for the others I need next time. read more

I recently saw the big sign saying "spice market" close to my office. So today I wandered between errands. I thought it was going to be like Salty, Savory, Spices &Teas on California Avenue. Nope I was wrong. Not the same kind of shop where you go in and but spices in various quantities. This is an Indian grocery store. Almost any food item you would need to cook up Indian food at home is available here. Right when I walked in there were piles of various rices in 20 pound bags. Upon roaming the aisles I discovered different canned items, boxed goods and the spices I have expected to find. And towards the back of the store is a large refrigerator / freezer area. For those who can't cook (or don't want to) they carry a nice supply of premade food in the freezer area. The gentleman working the store was quite nice and was able to answer any question on many of the products there. I'll need to return when I figure out what I am ready to try and cook. read more

One older lady working in the place. Had to ask her twice to check me out-- she was putting stuff on shelves. Their check out equipment was not working properly to accept Apple Cash and she was not real familiar with the equipment to handle tre debit card. She was, however, plenty cranky to the point if being mean. I was ready to just walk out and should have. Now I know why there wasn't even 1 car in their lot when I arrived. As much as I passionately love Indian food, I can say with full certainty that I have nowhere near the amount of skill or experience to whip up a successful, even passable, dish. Enter Spice Rack: hooking me up with the tools and renewed resolve necessary to make a KICKASS korma. Desi flavors have always drawn me in; bold and complex, South Asian cuisine is a guaranteed party in your mouth. Living up to its name, Spice Rack has an entire aisle dedicated to the many spices that make up some of my favorite eats. Coriander, cumin, and cloves! Oh my! I don't think I've EVER seen a bigger sack of turmeric in my life. If this sea of spice is a little too overwhelming, there are also some pre-made mixes for biryanis and butter chicken for the less initiated. I never had the chance to stop by the original location on Vassar, so I can't speak to any changes. But the Virginia St. location looks and feels new. Aisles are (neatly!) stocked to the brim. Small but fresh spread of produce; sizable selection of frozen dishes. My personal favorite section: SNACKAGE. If my Desi friends taught me anything in life, it's how to chow down on chakli and shakkarpara. You'll find plenty of both here! Feeling lost in label translation? Ask! A lot of frozen food they carry is expired over two years ago. Please see the attached photo. I went there in Jan 2018 and found that a lot of food packets are expired in Jan 2016. It was not just one random packet. They have two giant freezers full of expired food which they are selling. When I told the cashier about expired food, they just said "ok" and didn't even attempt to remove it. They know about this but still selling it. read more

Be open minded when you shop here. This store provides what Indian restaurants and families want. I see alot of comments expecting better service or that it is expensive. For similar items found elsewhere this store is actually more affordable. When I ask questions of the older woman who works there, she clearly is not sure what I am asking for, that does not mean she is rude. I have found everyone there to be helpful and nice if you treat them the same. Personally, I am happy they are here and for fresh ingredients I need for Indian meals, like curry leaves or kaffir lime leaves, they either have it or they don't just happy to know where I might find them. read more

I came here before and had an awesome experience, very helpful and knowledgeable. Today, not so much. I spent 160.00 bucks on a bunch of stuff I needed for catering. If I asked a question of the two, a gentleman and a older woman basically grunted, said, I don't know or just ignored us. I won't be back. Too bad, good selection, but there are other Indian grocers closer to me. I took the longer drive because I did have a good first visit with a different person manning the store. The mangoes Spice Rack sells as "Indian Mangoes" comes in a box that says "Mangoes from Mexico" are rotten and awful. They charge $20.99 per box. I cut five mangoes and all of them were BLACK inside and looked like they were infected with something. My suggestion would be to stay away from the mangoes. I don't frequent too many Indian markets, only because I don't have many where I live. I came here to explore and pick up new spices/ taste packets. Tried some cosmetic items/soaps that I like. They carry snacks that were new and tasty to my palate. They have a lot of beans and frozen items. I feel like I'm on a treasure hunt for (unusual items for me) special things. read more

I have (since my first posting on this business) been back here a couple of times and I won't be going back again EVER. Between A-1 Indian Groceries and Turmeric, there is no reason to ever set foot in this store again. A-1 Indian Grocery 2302 Oddie Blvd Sparks, NV 89431 Turmeric 9333 Double R Blvd Reno, NV 89521 Either of the above 2 places are staffed by way friendlier people and they are much better at keeping their products marked properly. Every time I have been in here there has been the same guy behind the counter, or, more usually, in the back and unavailable. He has been consistently rude and short tempered every time I have needed anything. Last time I was in they had STILL not bothered to mark the vast majority of their products with pricing. When I finally rousted the guy and asked for some pricing, he was rude and obviously very annoyed that I want to know what a thing COSTS before I will shell out for it. And the prices for the few things I managed to get information for were EXORBITANT. A small bottle of almond oil was $18 - I pay $8 to $10 for the same size bottle in every other store in town, not just Indian grocery stores, but regular grocery stores too. When he told me that tiny bottle of almond oil was $18, I didn't quite hear him properly and had to ask, "Did you say $8?" - because that's what it OUGHT to cost. And he practically shouted at me in response. VERY rude. Why should I even need to ask? Clearly because they do not WANT you to know what the actual prices are. I was also looking for a particular (and very popular) brand of snack and asked if he had it. Instead of telling me no, he says "Sure, sure!" and dragged me over to his snack section and tried to sell me the stuff on the shelves which is NOT WHAT I ASKED HIM FOR. I wanted to know about the particular brand and type I was looking for. I did NOT want a hard sell for crap I didn't want. All he had to do was say "No". Following that up with "but I can show you what I DO have" would have been ok (and I would have declined, having already been over there) but dragging me to the aisle AS IF he had what I wanted when he clearly did not and then trying to convince me to buy other stuff is NOT ok. This isn't India. Perhaps you would like me to start bargaining with you as well. Actually that might explain the unmarked items and high prices, maybe they DO expect you to bargain over every item. In my original review I said "I am NOT going to be bothered to ask the price of every single thing I need to buy. So until they can be bothered to price their products, there's really no point in even setting foot in the door." Guess what. That is still true. Given the ridiculous prices and the fact that they don't want to actually mark everything so you KNOW how high their prices are, I won't be back. Oh yeah. And the rude guy who seems to run the place. My husband and I are regular shoppers here... but today around 7pm my daughter started crying for Mango Lassi, so my husband and I decided to take her to Spice Rack Market since we are regulars here and there closing time wasn't until 8... we get here around 740 along with a few other shoppers... she lets everyone else in, but when we came in she turn us around and said that she was closed... l have never experienced anything like this before... I'm heartbroken, that she could look me and my crying child in the eyes with no emotion and tell me they are "closed" even though I walked to the door with others but me and my daughter were the only two not let in. Okay, so my wife and I went to check out this store and at first were pleasantly surprised by all of the interesting Indian spices and cuisine here. Unfortunately the majority of items on the shelf are not labeled with accurate prices or are in the wrong location for the label that is there. One has no idea of what an item costs. If by some miracle you can suss out what an item costs, be aware that when you go to the check out there is no way to know if the price is accurate since the check out doesn't allow the customer to see the prices of the items as they are being scanned. I found several mistakes that of course were in the market's favor. As an example, we were looking at the various bags of Mirch Masala while trying to figure out how much they cost and lo and behold we see a sign that says All Large bags of Mirch Masala 2.49! Well, we picked up a large bag of Mirch Masala Diet Bhel and discovered when we got home that we were charged $4.99! Anyway, the guy behind the counter was rude and unhelpful. We ended up spending much more that we thought simply because we were only guessing at prices. We will go elsewhere in the future. read more

My husband and I have driven past this store many times over the 2 years we've lived in Reno, but never stopped to check them out. We finally went there this past Saturday, mainly to just look at the spices they had. I love to cook -- so to me, it was like a kid in a candy store! While they did not have ALL of the more "exotic" spices that I so love to cook with, I was overjoyed to see that they DO have a rather nice large supply of MOST of them and at such wonderful prices! I forget the young lady's name that helped me find my spices (I'm disabled and have vision impairment) .. but she was super friendly, attentive and most eager to share with me cooking tips and recipes. The store is immaculate, even the air inside the store was like a fresh summer day! I wanted to buy some ground fenugreek, she got it for me, but for some odd reason, I handed it back to her at the counter .. she was puzzled by that .. I didn't understand her reaction .. but now I get it! My mind went blank or something, silly me! Oh well, now I have a reason to go back this weekend! LOL .. However, I did purchase a 7 oz bag of ground fennel and 1 gr of saffron. This store is now my "go to" store for my exotic spices. read more
