A bunch of us friends decided to go for some comfort food after a long hike. Picked this place as it had high ratings. The restaurant itself was two faced, the front of the restaurant was small and not welcoming, which was odd since we saw good pics of the restaurant on Yelp. Then we realized there was a special seating area inside the restaurant which was much more cozy and actually felt like a good restaurant.
Anyway, we got good seats and here goes the order:
Non-veg thali, came with 2 non veg dishes. The chicken curry was just average and was overwhelmingly cinnamony, it did not have the right amount of salt to balance it. 2.5/5. The Saag chicken was good, I guess it was kind of the lone star dish in the plate which actually felt a little better compared to the other dishes. It had the right amount of spinich, mustard, spice and salt, it is something I would recommend trying. 3.5/5. The plate also came with a leg piece of tandoori chicken, which was just appalling. This dish stooped to a different level, it was dry, excessively colored, bland and the crust tasted like cardboard, I did not dare taking another bite. 0/5
Veg thali, came with 2 veg currys, Dhal makhani and veg tikka masala(which apparently is a dish). The Dhal makhani was just plain mashed Dhal which was overly loaded with red chilly just coz I ordered it 4 star spicy. I was expecting a good burn of green chillies on the tongue but this just burnt my mouth. I would expect the dish to be made specific to my ask, but looks like they have pre made the Dhal and threw some red chilli into it. Dhal makhani is supposed to be rich and creamy with butter and cream. 1/5. The veg tikka masala had the good creamy rich consistency of a tikka dish and had good amount of veggies in it. I liked the fact that there were roasted paneer(cottage cheese) in it and not raw. This was by far the best thing on the veg plate. 3.5/5. The veg plate had a samosa (with stuffed masala potato), which was just ok, some sweetness from the peas, underwhelming masala from the sauteed patatos. I would have liked it with more masala and the potatoes to be a little more mashed, which is how good filling should be. Also, the crust should be crispy which it was not, felt like pre made again. But then here comes the real bummer, one of the samosas which came with another veg thali was undercooked, had raw and pasty crust and uncooked patatos. 1.5/5
Each of the thalis (veg and non veg) came with some lettuce salad(and ranch) which was a little odd to have in an Indian thali, but the salad in itself was good. 3/5. The thalis also came with naan which we asked to substitute with some chapati. I guess that was the best decision we made since the chapati was made in layers, was light, soft and amazing easy to tear apart. I was really happy with the chapatis and would totally recommend having it in place of naan. 5/5. The raita was something I really enjoyed in the thali, it was perfectly made, good consistency and not too runny, good amount of sweet, salt and sourness from yogurt. 4/5. All the thalis came with jeera rice, cooked with long grain rice. The rice was dry and I didn't bother eating it after couple of bites. 1.5/5
The order of biryani turned out to be an utter disappointment. The biryani was tangy(who does that to our beloved biryani ?!) and just chicken gravy topped with some colored rice. They topped the biryani with spring onions, which I feel shows where the dish stands, it was an abomination. The biryani was in no way tasting like a biryani. 0/5 (coz I can't take it when this happens to my favorite dish)
We also ordered the "proclaimed best" chicken wrap, a surprise size for the price tag. It was a large wrap with chicken, rice, peas and lot of cilantro and masala. I liked the rice peas masala which was a good filling in the wrap. The chicken flet like thin cut barks of trees, hard and dry but thankfully the rice and peas was the primary filling, saved the day. 2/5
Dessert time ! The Gulab jamuns were not bad, but a little cold(which I was fine with). They are supposed to be served a little warm for the best taste, but then that's just personal preference. 3/5
The last morsel should end well to give a good conclusion to any meal. So we ordered a Ras Malai(a rich cheese cake like dessert) to quench our dessert craving. This is where I lost all my respect for the restaurant, the Malai was spoilt and inedible. The Ras (which is sugar syrup and spiced condensed milk) was nice and creamy, but then the Malai was just not something that should be served to anyone. The only bite I took(and spit it out) had a rancid taste. For first time in so many years of Yelping, I felt I wished I wasn't there.
I'm not sure how this restaurant has such good ratings considering such average or below average food. Wouldn't recommend this. read more
