Hawaii Animal Sanctuary - Christmas village display

Hawaii Animal Sanctuary

(10 reviews)

I saw an online ad for a rummage sale benefiting this place and it excited us all to go. It was a…read morevery mixed visit to say the least. The Hawaii Animal Sanctuary isn't what you'd think; it's mostly a safe zone for feral cats. The smell is immediately noticeable when you get out of the car: feline feces. The hot day we were there just made it worse the longer we stayed. The coolest part of this place is that the property owns a number of World War II era tunnels. They were used for munition and food storage before being decommissioned. Now the sanctuary uses them for large rummage sales to raise money for the property. The tunnels smell old; they're humid and a bit uncomfortable for people bothered by that type of climate. They offer $5 historic tours with a guide at noted times, so be sure to be there early if you're interested. Now for the unpleasant things. We brought our dog along and I felt unwelcome. I was so confused due to the name. Asking about the makeup of the animals they care for (as stated above) it's only cats. After we did our shopping, the dog and I waited outside. It was unbearably hot in the sun. We waited under the tarp area and were quickly met with fire ants biting our feet. Going under the trees, the smell was even worse, and immediately our feet were covered with flies. They were unrelenting. It was then we headed back in to the tunnel - I'd much rather deal with humidity than filth. In come the volunteers. I was reprimanded and rudely talked to on more than one occasion while I was minding my own business. No details are necessary, only they were "yelling" at the wrong person. It really turned me off to wanting to come back or bring others here. I'm unsure about their mission even less so when rudeness is all I experienced; outside of the stench that is.

My wife and I decided to tour the bunker tunnels at the Hawaii Animal Sanctuary in Aikahi on a…read moreSaturday in July at 11:00. First, the parking is very limited and you might have park a block away or so in the residential neighborhood. If you park outside, be aware that there is a very long and very steep driveway that you would have to walk up to get to the bunkers. Be prepared for a long hot tour if you go during the summer like we did. Bring water to hydrate and make sure you use the restroom just before you arrive because there is no public restroom. The fee for the tour is only $5 and $3 for children. Unfortunately our 11:00 tour was very large with about 70 people attending. So, as we enter the bunker we crowd together so we can listen to the tour guide but the air gets warmer because of everyone's body heat so you start perspiring from the start. The tunnels add to the acoustics so that with a large crowd you can hear everyone talking which makes it hard to hear the narration. People started shushing others but that only made them talk softer which really didn't help because their voices still can be heard in the tunnels. They say that the 1:00 tour is the least crowded so that might be the best option if you want to go. After the first half hour we gave up. We were dripping with sweat and frustrated because we couldn't hear the narration so we cut our losses and left. What history we did manage to hear was very interesting so I may return when the weather cools. There is also a thrift shop in the bunker where everything they sell is really cheap. My wife managed to find a few items and it only cost her $5. All proceeds go the the animal shelter so your money goes to a good cause.

I went with my mom who wanted to adopt a cat but was hesitant to go alone, so I went mainly as support. Their staff was extremely kind and informative, sharing both fun and important facts about their personalities and habits, and letting us know about which cats would be better fits for my mom's lifestyle than others. The adoption process went smoothly, incl. the digital contract, carriers, health documentation, etc. I was a bit surprised when they had a rep for pet insurance give a spiel for their insurance plans at the end - kinda felt like a surprise sales pitch sprung on us, but I appreciated that they encourage having pet insurance as emergencies with animals are bound to pop up. I'm seeing a lot of people having issues getting in touch with them remotely over phone or email, so I can't speak on that, but in person, they were great!

Not sure what her role is. (Although she seems to think she is the HHS police.) She seems to have major emotional dysregulation issues and will SNAP at people who are with a foster dog, or addopting a dog, that is sniffing at the three dog display cages in front, "DON'T LET THE DOG MAKE CONTACT WITH THE PUPPY!!!" (These three cages out front seem to be featured dogs they want people to notice?) Well perhaps they should put the cages higher up?? She also asks a lot of personal questions and follows people around the shelter, observing/spying as they view or interact with dogs (passive agressive much?!?!). If HHS was SO concerned about disease transmission, perhaps they should not have cats roaming loose inside the shelter, or FERAL CHICKENS flying and running around all over the shelter and DRINKING from the dog water bowls. After three encounters with this person in April and May, I don't want to go back. It's hard enough to be grieving and I don't need to deal with people who seem to be judging everyone who enters the shelter. I may check out the Ewa location instead. HHS leadership: the bizarre woman at the front needs to get some training on keeping her personal issues at the door when she shows up for work. GEEZ!!!

Here is my story: I usually have my cats under control at home or cat boarding at my veterinarian's location when I travel. but shucks! I wasn't lucky this past weekend. The other side of the coin is I was lucky because I found Pounce. A couple points 1. a walking distance to my office 2. pricing comparable to what my vet would charge 3. please environment for my felines 4. easy drop off easy pick up 5. daily follow up with pics of my felines from Pounce 6. comprehensive schedule of their stay; to and including when they use the bathroom... go figure! 7. they can/will administer meds if need be (one of my girls has asthma) My felines while happy to return home with me were treated with kindness and care. I will always go to Pounce from now on. Now then, the facility- clean, climate and air controlled facilities. I went to the Queen Street location and parking was easy. Right in front. You will need to call them when you get there. The doors are closed (for obvious reasons) and one of the gals will come out to get you. Same process on the way out! They have your fur babies all packed up and ready to go. Call them and they will wheel them out to your car!!! Sadly, I won't be boarding my felines at my vet any more as I'm so pleased with Pounce. Imagine! My own vet who cares for my fur babies want to charge you all sorts of things to board. Forget that; especially since my felines were not strangers to the vet clinic. But now! my felines are no longer strangers to Pounce. A definite must try if you have felines to board!

This is my honest review of OahuSPCA. Overall, I believe they are a good organization, and I…read moreappreciate that they took in my kittens when I could no longer keep them because my landlord did not allow pets. However, I do have one major concern. Last year, I surrendered my kittens to OahuSPCA and paid $150 per kitten with the understanding that they would be placed into loving, safe, and permanent homes. Earlier this year, I unexpectedly came across one of my former kittens on TikTok. I recognized him immediately and spoke with both the content creator and the current owner. I was told that she adopted him from the Hawaiian Humane Society in Ewa Beach, where he was housed alongside his three siblings. This was extremely upsetting and confusing to learn. I entrusted OahuSPCA with finding secure homes for them, so discovering that all four kittens ended up at the Hawaiian Humane Society left me feeling shocked and disappointed. I truly cared about those kittens and only wanted the best for them. Knowing they were transferred elsewhere, let alone to the Hawaiian Humane Society, after I paid surrender fees and trusted they would be placed directly into homes, has been very difficult for me to process. Don't get me wrong, I still think that OahuSPCA is good, as they are a no-kill shelter, but they need to ensure NOT to place precious cats and dogs in the hands of the Hawaiian Humane Society, because of the history and treatment of unwanted animals, and overcrowding can lead them to put down unwanted and healthy animals, sadly.

We loved meeting Tiny Diamond so much that we also sponsored her adoption fee, hoping she finds her home soon If you can't adopt at the moment, please consider taking a dog out for a day, they will love it!

He has been a cherished family member ever since that fateful evening. We had him scanned at the vet, but they didn't know which company. I tried calling HHS and never got a person, then I found Cat Friends. The switch was easy with the company once I verified with the csr who the original chip belonged to. He is now an indoor only kitty enjoying the spoils of wet food, air conditioning, tv, toys, bird watching beds, and being granny's favorite fur baby. Just dont tell the others. Lol! Thank you Cat Friends for the village involved in his life. From the people who trapped and released him, to the medical team who neutered and monitored him. I will pay it forward for introducing me to my best friend. ^_^ Update: I realized I didn't include information on how others can help too! On their website, hicstfriends.org, click on ways to help. There is a donation link powered by givebutter, so you can make a one time or monthly monetary donation of your choice. There is a volunteer link if you wish to sign up for more opportunities such as clinic days, or other duties such as educating, trapping, or assisting other volunteers in feeding/trapping. You can also gift items they need such as: wet and dry cat food, gas gift cards, led flashlights and batteries, 55 and 13 gallon trash bags, paper towels, and clorox bleach for their supply pantry/clinic days. If you are unable to make the the supply drop off from 10a-2p on their clinic days, you can always give them a call and coordinate a drop off date. Clinic days involves signing up for different shifts, (9-2, 12-4p, 3p-end of shift) and different duties such as: checking in, numbering the traps and placing kitties in line for surgery, cleaning the traps and lining them with fresh paper, monitoring the cats who are waking up from anesthesia (I think this is a great opportunity for future vet med students), administration duties such as helping with paperwork or discharging cats, laundry, cleaning, and organizing. So there is definitely something for everyone. *^_^*

My daughter loved: - feeding cats - playing with cats I was a little worried because she had a bad experience at a puppy cafe in Japan, but the kittens seemed well behaved. The space is thoughtfully separated into two rooms: one for little kittens and one for the adult cats, which I really appreciated. You're free to wander back and forth between rooms, so it feels relaxed and never rushed. Your visit comes with a small treat for you and a variety of cat toys to choose from! The cats are adoptable, which I thought was such a kind and humane touch. It's clear they genuinely care about finding these cats loving homes. Just a friendly heads-up: scratches can happen. Pretty sure the owner does their best to keep those tiny murder mittens trimmed, but cats will be cats. If you do leave with a few battle scars like I did, they've got you covered with bandaids and lint rollers too, because the cat hair is inevitable. Overall, this place is cozy, thoughtful, and incredibly cute!! Such a lovely experience!! I'd absolutely come back again!!
