At that point, my running experience consisted of the couch to 5K training program and a couple of 5Ks. I considered more formal (read: expensive) training programs and decided to go with Austin Fit because it seemed beginner friendly and was easy enough on the pocketbook that if I decided running 13.1 miles wasn't for me, then I wouldn't have lost much. What I found was probably the best value for a beginner running program Austin has to offer. For the membership price I got: a 24-week summer training plan, group runs on the weekend, seminars about nutrition, hydration, and other running basics, and best of all, a friendly welcome to the Austin running community. Austin Fit offered a variety of pace groups and encouraged the members to change groups as they felt comfortable. I loved the run/walk approach to the long runs. It helped me go from a runner that could barely eke out 3 miles to being able to run 12 with confidence.

I find that the way they train based on time during the week instead of mileage was not good for me. And sadly, being that the coaches are volunteers who used to be just regular old members maybe one season ago, I don't trust their judgement as much. I have found myself to be more injury free this running season and think that has a lot to do with moving on from this program. P.S. I did not finish Rock n' Roll San Antonio and had to ride the sag wagon at mile 15. No medal and a whole lot of pain. And no support from my so called coach who shall remain nameless. P.P.S. Jorge uses his own crew and really knows pools. It was such a great find for us and we are very happy with the workmanship and quality. I personally take the circuit classes 3-4 times a week and I would highly recommend them. The instructors are very knowledgeable, the programming is great, they do a proper warm up and cool down and they really make sure you understand the moves and know what you are doing. I submited a formal complaint regarding the coach who conducted a children's basketball program…read more His behavior toward both my daughter and me was completely unacceptable, verbally abusive, and entirely inappropriate for someone entrusted with teaching young children. had my complaint been taken seriously I would not be here posting about ithad my complaint been taken seriously I would not be here posting about it, but instead was shoved off. I also learned that a very similar situation occurred during another classes. My eight-year-old daughter became upset and was sent off the court after being publicly yelled at for an unknown reason. I calmed her down and sent her back, then coach immediately raised his voice at her and sent her off the court again. Unprovoked. I calmed her a second time and let her sit out for five minutes. She quietly rejoined her group, waited patiently in line for her turn, and when it was finally her turn, the coach screamed at her in front of every child and parent that he was "done with her" and that she needed to leave the "His court." This was the third time she had been publicly removed from class that day. At this point I was extremely confused. I had witnessed nothing that justified this level of hostility toward an eight-year-old child. Assuming I had missed something, I walked to the side of the court and waited respectfully for an opportunity to speak with the coach. I did not interrupt the class or demand his attention. I simply wanted to understand what had happened so I could address the issue appropriately with my daughter. Instead of speaking to me professionally, the coach yelled at me to get off "his court." I was standing along the same perimeter where other parents and people walking laps were located. He then stated that he was "done" with my daughter and that we needed to leave. My daughter had spent most of the session crying on the sidelines confused over the situation, and it was obvious this coach had no intention of handling the situation professionally. Rather than force my daughter to remain there in tears, I quietly collected my son and began leaving with both of my children. As I walked away, without saying a single word to him, the coach repeatedly and aggressively yelled across the gym at my back: "Let them go! Let them go! I don't care! Get off my court! Let them go!" I want to be absolutely clear: This entire confrontation was completely one-sided. As a parent, I trusted your organization with the care of my children. That responsibility includes their emotional well-being as much as their physical safety. These classes are designed for children between the ages of six and twelve. Young children become frustrated, cry, make mistakes, and need guidance. It is the responsibility of a coach to teach, encourage, and redirect them--not scream at them, publicly humiliate them, or repeatedly remove them from participation without explanation. Most heartbreaking of all is lasting impact this coach has had on an eight-year-old child. This is not coaching. This is not discipline. This is intimidation. We were the target of his aggression multiple times without explanation.

The real deal. This is not a HIIT gym. This is not an indoor…read morecycling studio, or fitness class in a dark room with neon lights. This is a boxing club; but don't get me wrong, it is fun as heck! I struggle keeping up with gym routines or high intensity classes because you're only ever doing it for the feeling afterwards, or for how they promise you'll look, if only you came back 3+ times a week. Do you know what that's called? You're using those classes as a means to an end. But not here. Not boxing. For me, at least, the very activity of boxing is an ends in itself (that just so happens to give me the fitness and body I've been after all along). It's hard, with tricky combos and footwork, coupled with exhausting, 2-minute stretches of nailing a bag with uppercuts. It keeps my mind buzzing, trying my best to keep it sharp and get the combos right (or helping my partner with their's), and forces me to reach deeeep into my reserves to hit, weave, and power through those moments when you just want to say "I can't". The gym is a no-nonsense, warehouse style venue, with plenty of bags and floorspace for the size of the classes, and a pretty decent split of men to women (though I think there's also a dedicated Thursday class for women?) Any notion of it being intimidating go away completely the moment you introduce yourself to the person next to you. This gym keeps true to what it set out to do, and I think for that reason it attracts that kind of person; no pretenders or showboaters or other such characters. There are some pro looking people, and some very green looking people (like me), and some in-between. People come here because they enjoy the thing they're doing. They're not here to just enjoy the after-effects. Classes are Mon, Wed, Fri, and I hope I can continue to make them all! (And when I don't, boy do I miss it!)

1 Year Review: I avoided CrossFit because I didn't want to get injured or be around a bunch of…read more"brohs". Blind luck brought me to UpReach. In the past year I have HEALED a lifetime of untreated injuries from going there. I'm no longer in constant pain every time I move, use stairs, or even stand up after a period of sitting. I've dramatically increased my range of motion as well, and learned how to do things I'd never thought possible. My overall fitness level is phenomenal. Coaching: I can't emphasize enough the value of the coaching, especially as I have tried out a couple dozen other CrossFit gyms. The coaches here have a well thought out warm-up and cool-down, including mobility and accessory work. They also explain the "why" of it. There is careful instruction and demonstration for each movement of the workout from the best of the best of the best coaches. During workouts there is constant attention and coaching to both increase performance and eliminate the risk of injury. Ownership: The gym transitioned owners about 11 months ago. Every aspect of the gym has improved in that timeframe. Facilities, programs, and culture literally improve daily. The owner actually cares about the outcomes of the members and isn't just there to maximize profits, but instead focuses on the well-being of the members. The members are also really fantastic humans and have become the foundation of my social circle in and out of the gym. This is an incredibly inclusive community that will accept people wherever they are in life. Finding this gym has been the best thing that has happened to me since coming to Austin 6 years ago.
