If you haven't heard that the newest location of Spencer's Place has opened now you know. Located inside TEAM 4 Kids near the corner of Cotton Lane and Greenway in Surprise. This location is in a lot shared with many businesses and parking could get a little backed up, but today I had no trouble. I already adore the original location (also in Surprise) and today proved no different. I was pleased to see more items on the menu than the other location. From salad options to fruit, pastries and my favorite the Greek yogurt parfait with gf granola. Fruit and local honey, so good! Service was amazing and everyone is always so kind. Today besides the yogurt I ordered a cold brew with heavy whipping cream and sf vanilla. There is so much seating that vary from small, high table top to a cozy couch. My friend's son enjoyed a few puzzles while we chatted. The concept of Spencer's is my biggest reason for coming. Not only is it a locally owned business it is a place that employs and trains individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They provide the community with a heart changing experience. I love the pop tarts from Suss Pastries and the local honey for sale. You may also support the shop by purchasing a shirt, stickers or coffee mugs with art made by staff. While it is I'm a warehouse type building it has a warm and cozy feel. We really enjoyed our time and can't wait to go back.

A Taste of Italy Right Around the Corner From the moment you…read morewalk in, this charming Italian bakery and market feels like stepping into a neighborhood shop straight out of Italy. The display cases are filled with an incredible variety of beautifully decorated cakes, pastries, cookies, and traditional sweets that make choosing just one treat nearly impossible. Beyond the desserts, the shop offers an impressive selection of freshly baked breads, Italian cookies, pasta, imported groceries, sauces, and ready-to-take-home meals. The refrigerators are packed with homemade specialties that make it easy to bring a delicious Italian dinner home without doing all the work yourself. Everything looks fresh, made with care, and rooted in tradition. The warm, family-style atmosphere/service and abundance of authentic products make it a place where you'll want to browse slowly and leave with much more than you planned. Whether you're stopping in for a cannoli, picking up a cake for a celebration, or stocking your kitchen with Italian favorites, this bakery is a true hidden gem. A wonderful reminder that the best food is often found in small places with big hearts.

They have a large selection of cookies, cakes, and even premade dinners that you can take home and bake yourself, which I thought was a great idea for a convenient meal. There is seating tables inside and outside, and the customer service was good but very much a classic New York-style experience. We ordered an eggplant Parmesan sandwich and a chicken Parmesan sandwich. The bread was good. For dessert, I tried a chocolate cannoli, which unfortunately wasn't to my taste, and a wedding cookie, which was light and fluffy but just okay. I also bought several other cookies, but most of them had a flavor that reminded me of the glass display case they were stored in. the cookies just didn't taste very good to me. I also ordered an iced latte, and the total for everything came to about $30, which I thought was a good value considering we had two sandwiches, desserts, and a drink.

A West Valley Gem Packed with Flavor, Charm, and Plenty to Discover…read more If you've ever driven past that bright pink building on the corner of 101st and Grand Avenue in Sun City and wondered, "What's in there?" let me save you the suspense: it's the New York West Bakery, and it's absolutely worth pulling over for. In fact, I've made the hour-plus drive each way more than a dozen times just to visit. Whenever I find myself anywhere in the West Valley, this place is a mandatory stop. I've taken countless photos of my visits because there is always something new to see, taste, or admire. Under its new ownership, New York West Bakery has evolved into a wonderfully unique fusion-style café. The menu is delightfully unexpected, featuring everything from traditional breakfast favorites and homemade tamales to incredible Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches. If I can dig up some of my photos, I'll add them because these sandwiches deserve their own spotlight. The transformation isn't limited to the menu. The Interior: Spotlessly clean. During one recent visit, I watched an energetic staff member carefully mopping the floors and making sure everything looked perfect. It's obvious they take pride in the place. The Exterior: They've added a charming outdoor patio complete with colorful umbrellas, comfortable seating, and newly planted trees that will provide even more shade as they grow. It's a fantastic addition and makes for a relaxing place to enjoy a pastry and coffee. The Food: Where This Place Really Shines When New York West Bakery gets it right, they absolutely knock it out of the park. Their fruit tarts are hands-down some of the best I've had in years. They're fresh, beautiful, bursting with flavor, and surprisingly affordable for the quality you're getting. Best of all, everything is made from scratch, which shows in every bite. The newer savory menu items are also a huge win. Their Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches deliver serious value. They're enormous. Honestly, one sandwich is big enough to share and still leave you feeling satisfied... or at least leave just enough room for dessert. And speaking of dessert, I have to mention those fruit tarts one more time. They're that good. My wife Lucy absolutely loves them. In fact, "love" might be an understatement. If fruit tarts had a fan club, she'd probably be the president. New York West Bakery continues to grow and evolve, and it's exciting to watch. Between the friendly atmosphere, expanding menu, beautiful patio, and from scratch-made baked goods, it's become one of my favorite hidden gems in the Valley.

Update: June 2026 The new owners have expanded into more of…read morea café than a bakery, and a fusion one at that since you can get Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches, tamales, and traditional breakfasts. I love that they added outdoor seating with cheery umbrellas and have planted trees to provide additional ambiance and shade, although the highway noise will always be problematic. The inside is spotless and while I was there a friendly staffer was keeping it that way by energetically mopping. Sadly, the St. Joseph's pastry I had had a tough not flaky or crisp shell, but the ricotta filling was light and good. I was so looking forward to the poppy seed bread but when I got it home and cut into it, the filling was not spread out throughout the bread and there wasn't much of it. The bread itself was not tear apart tender, but dry. I saved it by slathering butter on it and lightly toasting it, but that shouldn't have been necessary. For the prices, everything should have been top notch or marked down and labeled as day-olds. I'm curious about the breakfast and lunch café options, so I'll probably go back to give them a try, but note that the prices have increased by more than a few cents per item since the 2025 someone else posted, so check for the latest. Maybe they are trying to do too much and should limit the variety and be known for a few super delicious items that are always fresh and superior to what you could get in a supermarket. Having a few signature items and being the go-to place during special holidays would help define them, and please, please FRESHNESS is crucial--maybe the products are just drying out more because we're in AZ, but I'm not the only one mentioning dried out items.

They had already put away half of their gelato and baked goods in the cabinet. There were three parties of people that walked in while we were in there and then sitting out on the really nice patio. But what really makes this place special is their mission. They hire individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively invest in the community -- from vendor markets to hosting events like their upcoming 5K. You can feel that purpose woven into everything they do. We tried one of their themed drink flights (the Sweet Heart menu was adorable -- Love Potion, Love Struck, To The Moon & Back... so cute). The presentation in the little mason jars was fun and picture-worthy. Flavor-wise, they leaned sweeter than my personal preference, but still enjoyable and perfect if you love flavored lattes. They offer plenty of milk options, including non-dairy, which I appreciate. Bakery - vegan and gluten-free options clearly labeled. I grabbed the lemon scone (vegan + GF). It was good! I'm personally more of a vegan-but-not-gluten-free girl, so texture-wise it's not something I'd specifically crave again -- but I absolutely appreciate that they create inclusive options. My friend had the cinnamon roll and was happy. They also have a small retail section with mugs, shirts, local honey, and little gift items, which adds to the community feel. Overall, this isn't a hyper-trendy, third-wave coffee aesthetic spot -- it's something better. It's purpose-driven, inclusive, and clearly loved by the neighborhood. Not a five-star flavor experience for me personally, but an easy four stars for what they stand for and the impact they're making.
