I make phone calls to Spenards in homer and anchorage. My stuff shows up in Seldovia. Well packaged and dry. Home project. ? Get it all in your pickup faster than doing it yourself at Home Depot or lowes. ( you cheap ass) ( I can say that...used to be me) The cons: You need to know your stuff. They don't have enough staff to baby you through a purchase or discussion. They can be busy at the counter. I've put in garage doors and hardware from here. Built a shed Building a garage , Bought compressors And nail guns. Put in a deck Put in an overhang over said deck. From cedar shingling to stainless steel deck screws. Customer service is.....NOT hands on. If you're used to a guy in every isle like lowes....you're going to be unhappy. But they have it. This is a long-time Alaskan owned business with a few locations across the state. I have come here a few times for odds and ends and was happy with the service and layout of the store. My sister and I stopped in after because she saw the outdoor hamburger/hotdog stand and was getting hangry. I opted for a hotdog while she got the burger without the bun, because carbs kill, and we were pleasantly surprised that it was free. There were chips and soda too, but I just wanted the dog. It was some kind of outdoor sales/vendor event. Someone walked over and gave us raffle tickets, and lo and behold I won a gift card. Holla! I've been wanting to upgrade the bathroom shower head so that's what I'm spending this card on. Side note, this business used to do a yearly Montana party and do the free hotdog/hamburger thing then too. A friend from Montana would go and tell me about it. SBS hasnt been a locally owned company for the better part of 20 years! The way that employees from the same company bad mouth and degrade other associates is appalling. Back stabbing among associates from the main branch to other branches is common and unless you are part of the good old boys club you will be treated with zero respect. As a customer I have seen them come in to do intercompany exchanges and heard them bad mouth the sales people for not knowing how to do the paperwork or to be flat out rude to the ones that do. read more

I have always enjoyed great customer service from SBS. Wether in Anchorage or Homer. In and out fairly quick. Was in and out in about 5 minutes at the Millwork division today. Rich at the contractors desk is always helpful in steering you in the right direction. I do shop Home Depot often as well and customer service can be hot or miss there, that is if you can find someone working in the area that your shopping at. I am having some snags with a Whirlpool laundry center and Joel in appliances tried to make sure that I was being taken care of. His kind, professional manner made my day. He is a wonderful asset to SBS. After 4 deliveries of Whirlpool Laundry Centers with defective washer door magnets they tell me I will have to get a GE washer/dryer unit instead. I do not like the old fashioned look of the GE unit. I still want a fully functional Whirlpool Laundry Center because it looks more modern than the GE unit. SBS apparently is refusing to ensure I can get the Whirlpool. :( I will need to figure this one out. read more

First of all, I don't live in Anchorage, I live in the bush - Nome to be exact. Spenard Builders Supply markets themselves via direct mail to all of us in the bush. They even have a rural sales department to ship to those of us in the bush. I recently called to order doors. I spoke to their rural sales desk, submitted my paperwork and waited for them to call with the total so I could place my order. I never heard back from them even after calling and leaving several messages. I think John Z. may be right - if you're not a contractor, don't expect good service. I've never had this problem with the big box stores in Anchorage. I'd prefer to buy local, but not from these guys! read more

Make sure you shop the box stores in the area before committing to a purchase from SBS. Found a pre-hung door that fit my needs 35% less at one of the local box stores. Normally shopping at local established businesses encourage me to spend a little more but after I discovered that SBS is part of s national chain based in Colorado, I didn't feel too bad saving money. read more

Went in because it was close to where I was so I thought it would be quick and easy all I needed was some nails to hang pictures. I asked someone where I could find some tiny nails to hang pictures she pointed and said the nail room. Great I'll just wander some more till I find it thanks for your help. Found the nails I needed and went to the cash register where the cashier didn't even look at me and asked me a question. I didn't answer because I thought she was talking to someone else. Then she looks at me and asks me again like I'm inconveniencing her. Long story short customer service sucks here. I'll take the extra time to go somewhere else next time. read more

I wish we would have read reviews before we committed to a new kitchen here. We ordered cabinets and it took 2 weeks longer to arrive than told to us by Sean (this put us behind on our countertops). When installed, a cabinet was broken, and we were told a new one would be rushed to us (only after my husband went in because Sean wouldn't email/call him back!). We were told it would be in last week... nope. And Sean has been totally unresponsive... again. It is pretty horrible when someone can't take 2 minutes to reply to an email or pick up a phone when that's their job. Once SBS takes your money expect them to run. Oh, and they wanted $2.5K more for the same counters we got at Traditional Marble and Granite. $2500! Sean told us they were the only retailers of our counters in AK (lie- they are LG, you can get them most places in town). read more

I am going to say that in this world of competition (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc et al) SBC continues to provide me with exceptional, personal service. My latest grand adventure occurred this past week when I went into the SBS with a teeny tiny small (but important to me) project. I was referred to Brian W in the Design Center. I've never had a good experience at SBS. The Dewils cabinets for my new home were ordered through SBS in 2014, and the designer (Charles) was horrible at his job. He took forever to do anything, he ordered items that weren't needed (trim and posts), and he was generally unpleasant to work with. I unfortunately just tried to deal with SBS again to order a few pieces of ASC metal roofing. The sales person I worked with never placed the order and never got back to me. I called and spoke to a manager who assured me that I would be contacted first thing the following morning by a sales person. I never heard anything. I called in a day later and they took down the info to place my order (again). I went in several days later to pick up my order and was told I needed to pick up from ASC. I also found out that only part of the order had ever been placed. They placed the rest of the order (again) and told me it would be ready in 2 days. I never got a call, so I just called back after 3 days and was told my sale person doesn't work today and that I should call tomorrow. The guy on the phone reluctantly told me he would try to look up my order and give me a call back. I won't hold my breath for that phone call... read more

Spenard is the worst store in Anchorage. Every time i go there, i regret it. This time, i tool i bought broke right out of the box. They refused to return it, and blamed the failure on my use of the tool. No trust that the customer had a valid issue. Ive had similar issues as the above review with their millworks - they wont even call you back. I am a small time builder in Homer. I receive very good service from the Homer store and am very satisfied. The quality of their products varies, as it does everywhere. Most of the quality issues are out of their hands, as well-made products are just hard to find these days. The lumber is terrible; very difficult to find 2X lumber that is not bowed, warped, and/or twisted, and most plywood sheets will not lie flat-just poor manufacturing. Also, I suspect the worst lumber products are shipped to Alaska. read more

In reading the reviews on this site, makes me sad that the customer service seems to be the main concern, or should I say, the lack there of. I used top work for Spenard Builder's in Homer and took great pride in the customer service I provided to our valued customers, although several of my co-workers didn't . I just tried to find out the Lois Drive store hours on this site and found they don't list them, nor do they have them on the phone recorded message? It is difficult to shop your store when you don't know if you are open or not. I would have to drive by both Home Depot & Lowe's to get to your store and will probably stop at them because I don't know if you are open. The most important thing you can do to compete with these large box stores is Customer Service. I will pay more for a product if the customer service is there , make me feel like you actually appreciate my business. The large box stores are also severely lacking in the customer service, so come on SBS, lets step it up. If your current employee's don't care about the customer, you know, the general public that pays their wages, I'm sure there are a lot of people looking for work that would do a much better job.
