I had a 7 month old mastiff I wanted to properly train as a family dog. After about 4-5 sessions total, she is fully trained in the capacity I want. Luckily, as a puppy she didn't have any bad habits to start out, but I was concerned with her growing resource guarding. Everything I read online made it even worse,but 1 session with Ricky and she's never had a resource guarding issue since (actually the opposite now- she wants to share her food lol) I found their prices very reasonable for in-home visits. (We did not do boarding because Ricky didn't feel it necessary and I was unwilling to part with my puppy!) They do not pressure you to buy a package, no annoying sales pitch, just shows up and trains your dog and answers all your questions. I think this place may be a scam (or at least they don't know what they're doing) and this was one of the worst experiences in customer service I have ever had in my life. My young dog has some reactivity and aggression and they suggested I send him away for the 8 week program at their site. Every week I asked for what he was working on, pictures, or videos, or any update at all. They constantly ignored me and provided no information whatsoever. They took my dog and gave no update for weeks on end. Finally they gave in and sent me 1 short video of him playing with another dog. I communicated I wanted to know how he was and what they were working on with him, and they completely ghosted me for weeks. After 8 weeks it was time for drop off back at my house and they forgot and got their schedules mixed up, so they held him for an additional week. For a total of 9 weeks. He came back exactly the same. All of the basic commands I had already taught him were intact, but he had the exact same reactivity and aggression, and all the things I asked them to work on with him. After 9 weeks, they hardly trained him, and in 9 weeks they sent me ONE short video and update on him. I unfortunately have to downgrade my review to a 1-star. I wrote my first review after Ricky advised me to euthanize my dog and offered to take him to the vet. I have since reached out to Ricky numerous times by text and phone about whether my dog has been euthanized, and have gotten no response. I basically have idea what happened to him. While I appreciate everything Ricky did while my dog was in his care, I find the lack of responsiveness extremely irresponsible, especially given the emotional toll that accompanies putting a dog down. read more

Starting out, I liked Johnny. But after many weeks of rescheduled sessions, I felt that it was not worth finishing training-despite paying for all of it ahead of time. I know Johnny had a lot going on, and he did help with my dog being around other people, but I doubt he even knew my name. After months of working here and there (yet paying for 8 sessions and asking for 3 a month), I don't think my dog gained as much attention and as a result didn't progress as she could have. Spectrum K9 came highly recommended by multiple friends but I was extremely disappointed with their service. I paid them $100 evaluation fee and they paired me with a trainer that is 45 minutes away...who has minimal time and I would have to travel to her. When I asked them to pair me with a different trainer, it took them 3 days to follow up with me, only to tell me that they were going to refund my evaluation fee and told me"good luck with [my] future training endeavors". Don't waste your time. I would recommend reaching out to a training facility that actually has time to take you on as a client and doesn't take your money then leave you hanging. I had the same experience as Jennifer Except the brother part and I paid for a 2 month immersion program minus my military discount. Unbelievable horrible customer service. I asked a question and was booted, tried to apologize and call and email after 4 days of trying I was blocked from calling them. My question was exactly the same as my initial request. If it wasn't good then why take my 100 dollars and waste my time with a consultation! Which says free on the web site. Weeks were wasted. Their contract seemed very scarce. I thought what the heck I'll go ahead and sign for $8,000 after I ask a question about any type of follow up or warranty of their work. If I'm gonna spend $8,000 I should get to ask a question at least. They terminated us with nothing but a generic text then went ghost. Then blocked me from calling. When I was looking for a trainer for my reactive puppy, I got two recommendations from a respectable business. Ricky at Spectrum Canine was one of them and after reading reviews online, I decided to find out further information. I scheduled a phone consultation, and after a couple of times of not being called back or being told hours of when to expect a call and not getting one, we finally spoke and I liked what I heard. I decided to set up an evaluation. I was told it would be $100 for one hour. I drove all the way out to meet him at a place of his choosing (for me, it was a three hour round-trip) because I truly thought that he was one of the best trainers out there. (Perhaps he is, but his professionalism and his assistant's professionalism - Erika- are horrible.) Ricky seemed very rushed when I met with him; he only spent 20 minutes with me but said that my dog was a good fit for his program. He was out of the parking lot before I was, but I still had to pay the full $100. I was a little perturbed, but okay, fine. I was looking to book a three week boot camp. I set things up with his assistant, Ericka for my dog to begin the board and train program. It was a three week program and I had to pay for it in advance in full. Meanwhile, my brother, who also had a puppy, had called Ricky and was awaiting a phone call back, as he also wanted a board and train program. He had been on the call list for two weeks and still hadn't heard anything. I mentioned this to Ricky when I was booking my program and he said he would call my brother that night. He never did. After another week, my brother still hadn't received a phone call. Three weeks and no phone call? That's just bad business practice right there, especially during these hard times - you would think you would be doing your best to keep business going. Ricky had told me when we had talked on the phone, that if I ever had any questions for him, to not hesitate to reach out (I had told him about a bad experience with a previous trainer for my other dog, who never communicated with me. He told me that would not be the case with him). So I sent a text - it was the first and ONLY time I asked - to them wondering if they weren't able to call my brother, who hadn't received a call in 3 weeks, would they be too busy to give ample time to my puppy? Now mind you, as I stated before, Ricky told me if I had any questions at all, I could reach out to him. So I did, looking for a little reassurance, with my text. Their reply back? "Sorry for your concern. We are going to issue a refund for the immersion program. We have a program that is very successful and we don't think it is a good fit with your concerns. If you would like to re-enlist her in the future we can do that." WHAT THE HECK??? They actually booted me out of the program because I asked a question. I immediately replied back that I did not want to be booted out of the program. No response. I tried calling them and apologizing if my text came across badly - I still wanted to be part of the program. No response. I messaged them again. No response. I so needed help with my puppy and I tried everything I could to apologize if my text was received wrong. They REFUSED to respond. I had never been treated this poorly in my life! I kept checking to make sure I got my money back. It finally was coming through, and then Spectrum Canine *canceled* my refund. Were they trying to keep my $4000? I reached out through PayPal to the email address provided. Ricky got right back to me and said that he would re-issue my refund. I tried one more time to email him and say I wanted to be part of the program. No response back. So this leads me to believe that not only are they unprofessional, they obviously have huge egos and the fact that I asked a question was too much for his pride, so they booted me. I guess because I didn't have a K9 dog, I didn't make the cut. Sorry - I guess just a poor teacher who was willing to give up a month's salary for proper training wasn't good enough for them. We were referred to Spectrum K9 when our working line Shepherd was kicked out of puppy class for being too intense/aggressive. We initially had some sticker shock at the prices, but knowing we had bit off more than we could chew with this dog, we decided to take the risk. Fast forward 6 months and we have a fantastically trained, lovable, family dog. We especially enjoyed working with Spectrum for a few reasons. First, and foremost, we got results. He explained that there is no magic bullet in dog training, no replacement for hard work and consistency - and don't let any trainer tell you otherwise. He taught us techniques to train our dog, laying groundwork for a healthy relationship for years to come. The second reason why I enjoyed Spectrum K9 was because they really seemed to respect my dog. They do not use "old school" techniques of force, excessive pain or punishment as a training tactic but rather a choice/reward. Was recommended to Spectrum/Ricky where our dog Zorah a Doberman entered into board and train for bite work. When she returned to us, we had a well rounded obedient Zorah. She was able to walk off the leash with an amazing heel, recall, etc. Knowing we had to obviously keep up with what was taught with obedience, we were excited with what we saw thus far and were excited to see what we would be trained on with bite work. We received a few decoy session (boogie man technique) but no bite work. Just Zorah doing a lot of barking. I am not going to knock Ricky's training. I do, however, feel that his business is geared and focus is for the Belgian doggies, Police Dog Training. If you're wanting your family dog to go through any protection training, I am sad to say that he is not the way to go. Ricky's communication is very poor almost non responsive. And, when it was requested to receive videos of bite work/protection training, we got nothing. Prior to us moving, Ricky informed us that he knew of trainers that he would refer us to in our new state, no communication on that either. So, we were set out to find our own. Now far as obedience training, his colleague, Julio ... 5 plus plus plus stars. Not only did Zorah get picked up from our home everyday, for day camp, Julio ensured that he spent some time with her obedience training. He would also watch Zorah when we went on vacations and as we transitioned with our move! I am not sure if this was part of the services BUT we would send group texts to Ricky and Julio with our requests, majority of the time, Julio would respond and we would just Venmo Ricky with additional $ so bite work/protection could be done with her. From September until we moved, end of June, we paid a total of $8,050. $5,700 of that was for the training that we did not FULLY receive. Our new trainer here, whom we found and began training mid July, in our new state, said that as far as obedience, Zorah is to the tee and would actually like us to put her in competition BUT her bite work, she has to start over because she is afraid. Her bark isn't because she is excited to work, it's more of a fearful Deterrence bark which steams from the "boggy man" training. Zorah barks but when there's advancement from the decoy for her to bite a sleeve, pillow, toy rat tail, or whatever tool he has, she fearfully barks and backs away or tries to hide. He also feels that it will take a long time to get her to bite but instead, for now, he will just work on her being scared of the advancement, then try to proceed from there. Oh, and we only pay $180/month two days a week for his bite club AND he has boarding and daycare, etc. in house. He often pulls her out and tries to work with her, but, no dice. Same behavior. So, with this long post, protection training we thought we were getting and paid for with Ricky, is not what we got! Julio is AWESOME and communication is on point. Ricky is awesome as well, however, again, not with your family dog. We definitely got robbed and taken advantage of our $5,700! read more

I wish I could give Ricky and his staff more stars! I am so excited to be typing this review I am completely unsure where to start. My German Shepherd was about 18 months at the time we decided to contact Spectrum was a HANDFUL. He jumped anytime you walked through the door or he got too excited, PULLED excessively on walks, barked uncontrollably, did not listen consistently, was afraid of people, and was not very confident in himself at all! Not what you'd expect from this breed. We contacting Spectrum and let me tell you the level of customer service I received from Ericka, AMAZING! Then, I was given the pleasure to speak with Ricky and I must say the customer service continued to be AMAZING! I told Ricky all about Joey, my dog, and he told me all about himself, his business and what to expect! He left no room for me to question ANYTHING! When it came down to picking Joey up it was not a quick, Ricky comes into your home gets your pet and leave. Ricky came, spoke with me and my family for about 5 minutes, met our dog (who actually pulled his collar and leash off), Ricky was patient! We finally got him back on the leash and Ricky still didn't just take our dog and leave! He took Joey on a quick walk accompanied by a family member which got Joey comfortable! My husband and I found Spectrum Canine through Instagram and it was the best thing that has ever happened to us! We have a 2 year old German shepherd that's a great dog, but he had some issues reacting towards other dogs on walks and it made it such a pain to take him places. I have been working with Ricky for several years and have been ecstatic with the results!! I have a service dog "Kali" that originally was being trained with a different trainer until I decided to try working with Ricky based on a recommendation and wish I had switched sooner. Kali has spent numerous weeks with him working on specific tasks. Bracing is the biggest one and he did an amazing job figuring out the best way for her to do it so she is comfortable yet still is effective for me. He also helped a lot with her temperament which is huge with a service dog. Whenever I'm in the hospital, Ricky is always able to accommodate and take Kali to board and train and if circumstances result in me needing more time, extending is never an issue. In addition to the work he does when he is with my dog, Ricky is very responsive if I need clarification on something--I never have to wait to hear the best answer. My family's pet dog "Buster" started working with Ricky recently and we've had great results redirecting some troublesome behavior even after just a couple sessions. We went to various training classes at a couple of pet stores, with no advances. We visited several dog training places in the Bay Area, from San Jose to Vallejo, but found their trained dogs were robotic, with little signs of a happy dog. We met Ricky on accident while walking our dog. He was running a dog training group class. We were very impressed with his students. We got a hold of Ricky the next day, and left our dog with him, for the "immersion program." Our lab puppy stayed with Ricky in his home, compared to many others who leave dog in an off-site kennel. A couple of weeks later, we got back a completely different dog. No pulling, no getting on couches, no BITING!! We love it. Ricky made the difference, from having a dog we lived with, to a dog that lives with us. This guy knows what he's doing. He identifies, and remedies the problems.
