Sunwest Automotive Engine - Subaru Forged Long Block

    Sunwest Automotive Engine

    (12 reviews)

I purchased a 5VZ-FE engine for my 3rd Gen 4Runner from Sunwest. I chose them over others because…read morethey had the heads already placed on the long block so I did not have to go through the hassle of dealing with putting them on. At first, everything was going great. I loved the product I received and it was beautifully done. Once I got the engine up and running, it was having an overheating issue. So what did I do? I replaced the thermostat, Then I had to replace my brand new radiator because it blew that apart. I went through three thermostats and of course went OEM. I contacted Sunwest and told them everything I had going on and the fact that it ran great without a thermostat installed. I told them the only thing else it could be were the head gaskets were placed on backwards. They assured me this was not possible in any way. After attempting numerous times to figure out what was going on, I caved and I needed to get it into a shop. I contacted Sunwest again and said it is going to go into the shop because I believe the head gaskets were backwards and if that was in fact true, they were going to be paying the bill. They said they would send me all the parts but the warrantee would be voided if the heads were removed. They also stated that I could take the entire engine out and send it back to them so they could do the work. There was no way I was taking the entire motor out again to make their lives easier. I wanted my 4runner running again so I went with the shop. I at this point was dealing with Kurtis and he was an awesome individual to work with and showed empathy to the entire situation. About 3 hours into the shop, they found that the head gaskets were indeed on the wrong sides. I contacted Sunwest and sent them pictures. They said they would pay $50/hr (which was for warrantee work) for book time which was 10-11hrs. Meaning they would only give me $550 for a job that cost me over $2k. And mind you.... This is 100% their fault. They apparently haven't updated their warrantee work labor costs since it has increased all around. I then talked to the owner, Leroy or Roy, something of that matter. He said it's truly sad that I went through that but I was lucky that I was even getting the $550 because I did the motor install as the owner. He said "It's a really fucked situation, but sorry" because all they could do is pay for warrantee work, according to their warrantee. I told him that in no way would it pay for even 25% of the bill. I told him that he either needs to cover it or he will see me in court. He said "Take me to court, we will not lose and haven't lost". Which goes to show that they have put out bad products and bad customer service numerous times. All I wanted was to get my engine fixed and get the funds recouped for what I had to spend. And no, I have not taken them to court because my time is more valuable than dealing with sleazy people who will not go above and beyond to make customers happy in the end. Either way, I will never use this company ever again, nor would I recommend anyone using them because they will ultimately screw the customer over, especially if it is their own fault.

They sent me an engine with a cracked head and have not responded to my claim submitted through…read moretheir website or any of my emails. I have been trying to contact S&J for more than 7 weeks now. I noticed the crack immediately upon removing the engine from the shipping crate. It is between a coolant passage and intake port. The head also shows obvious signs of repair in that area. There is welding splatter in that coolant passage and on top of the head. This head is not usage, the crack is all the way through.

I would like to write an update to my S&J Engines review. I…read morehad written a letter to them asking if we could work out this problem I had with a new engine I purchased. I wrote the letter in December and told myself I would give them until 1/31/23 to respond and if no response I would escalate to the Washington State Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division. I did not hear from S&J so I did escalate my issue. Upon doing so, I was contacted via email (which I prefer as I work graveyard) from Casey Fulks of S&J Engines. Casey asked NO QUESTIONS and refunded my money that I had kindly asked for and explained why. Casey Fulks, I appreciate you. I took this issue personal as I had really supported S&J Engines with excitement and faithfulness. I have been your customer three times and our friends/acquaintances have purchased from you based on our feedback. This was a huge deal to me in the customer service light. We are all human and mistakes happen. It's how a person/agency provides the customer service when there is a breakdown that matters. Casey, your customer service to me was stellar. You even advised me that you never received my original letter due to an address change/move. Now that your staff are finally under one roof, you said, you will be providing some review and training about the importance of customer service. This is truly appreciated. After communicating with Casey, I WILL be contacting S&J in the future, even with all of the downfalls experienced during my recent purchase. Casey's communication with me is the sole reason why. I felt like I mattered to Casey as a customer, I feel respected and appreciated and like I am part of the solution. I realize S&J is not out of the woods yet, but I do believe things have changed and will progressively get better. I know several of the Yelp Reviewers have had a bad experience as well. I'd like to ask those folks to reach out to Casey Fulks and see if you can mend the issue. I want to see our local business succeed. I'd like to see everyone happy and healthy. I hope everyone gives them a chance to make it right.

When getting quoted for a job they did not come look at the car and the new part I wanted to install so I either thought they were confident they know what they're doing/talking about, but no. They assumed it was a part different than discussed and didn't realize it would require more work than replacing the original part. They then asked for more time mid job and an increase in the job's cost (from what I originally agrred and signed for. I returned at a later date to ask how much it would be to finish and they said since the bumper has to come off, it would take around 2 hours of labor, so the cost would be $300. The original tech had told me he had everything routed for me to finish wiring "without" taking the bumper off. So either it takes them a ridiculous amount of time to take a bumper off I could do in much less than an hour, or they're lying about things and can't keep their stories straight. No wonder I've walked in while they argued on the phone with someone.
