This is a follow up review from a 2017 purchase. I had a smooth transaction process with S&J. The engine arrived within days of purchase. It is a 7.4L long block. I had some issues with installation that were on me. 9 years later it still runs like a Swiss watch. I did use all new components like oil, fuel and water pumps. Carb, distributer, coil, Upgraded cam and installed double roller timing chain. I would definitely buy from them again. And have referred them to friends! I had to amend this review. Nothing but trouble from the very start. Engine was smoking right from the start. I thought maybe it would improve as it got broke in. Nope, only got worse. I called numerous times and kept getting the run around. Finally got ahold of Dan in technical support. Very rude. Told me that the 7 year/70,000 mile warranty that Eric had sold me wasn't valid because the engine was supposedly high performance and only had a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. More run around. I finally gave up and figured it was an improperly installed posi-seal on #3 cylinder exhaust valve. I repaired it myself. Still consumes oil and engine coolant. The engine is pretty much worthless to me. Keeps overheating and I'm pretty sure it has melted the heat tabs at this point. I certain they would use that as another excuse to not stand behind their product. No customer service at all. Any one considering purchasing an engine from them BEWARE. Find ANY place else! They sent me an engine with a cracked head and have not responded to my claim submitted through their website or any of my emails. I have been trying to contact S&J for more than 7 weeks now. I noticed the crack immediately upon removing the engine from the shipping crate. It is between a coolant passage and intake port. The head also shows obvious signs of repair in that area. There is welding splatter in that coolant passage and on top of the head. This head is not usage, the crack is all the way through. read more

I would like to write an update to my S&J Engines review. I had written a letter to them asking if we could work out this problem I had with a new engine I purchased. I wrote the letter in December and told myself I would give them until 1/31/23 to respond and if no response I would escalate to the Washington State Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division. I did not hear from S&J so I did escalate my issue. Upon doing so, I was contacted via email (which I prefer as I work graveyard) from Casey Fulks of S&J Engines. Casey asked NO QUESTIONS and refunded my money that I had kindly asked for and explained why. Casey Fulks, I appreciate you. I took this issue personal as I had really supported S&J Engines with excitement and faithfulness. I have been your customer three times and our friends/acquaintances have purchased from you based on our feedback. This was a huge deal to me in the customer service light. We are all human and mistakes happen. It's how a person/agency provides the customer service when there is a breakdown that matters. Casey, your customer service to me was stellar. You even advised me that you never received my original letter due to an address change/move. Now that your staff are finally under one roof, you said, you will be providing some review and training about the importance of customer service. This is truly appreciated. After communicating with Casey, I WILL be contacting S&J in the future, even with all of the downfalls experienced during my recent purchase. Casey's communication with me is the sole reason why. I felt like I mattered to Casey as a customer, I feel respected and appreciated and like I am part of the solution. I realize S&J is not out of the woods yet, but I do believe things have changed and will progressively get better. I know several of the Yelp Reviewers have had a bad experience as well. Will not warranty the work after you purchase from them. They will say the engine overheated just to make you pay for faulty warranty work. Once you get the engine back, you will notice they did not even look at the motor. They will send it back to you the same way you sent it to them damaged and inoperable. I have never met a more deceiving, conniving business in my entire life. Everybody makes mistakes, and that's okay. The thing you want to avoid with a business is when they turn their mistake ONTO YOU. Yeah, they may assume you're dumb and there's a chance they can still come out on top. A real business should admit their mistake, apologize(that's not even a requirement) and amend the problem instead of "sticking to their guns" and defending their obvious mistake. I have lost thousands of dollars to S&J, months of my life, and had to start a whole new project over with a REAL business with balls to do the right thing. You can't fight evidence: When I got my engine, everything was flat out wrong: not just brand of parts, but the SPEC length of rods, piston cc, etc! It was hilarious how off it was! The photos show what were supposed to be -5cc flat top pistons. They are far from that rendering the compression ratio FAR too low for the heads that I spec'd the pistons for. Kyle tried to fight evidence: Kyle and Ryan thought I was some dumb asian kid and tried to tell me that the original specs that we agreed to would result in detonation. The compression ratio that the engine ended up with would not even run with the heads I had built by a real professional elsewhere. They wanted me to accept their mistake. I stood my ground and I paid for it. I didn't accept their mistake, and boy were they mad! I got a call from the sherriff's station telling me to stop harassing them because they thought they could just stop responding to emails, calls, and voicemails. Sorry, the law cannot protect you from screwing people over. I ended up losing thousands of dollars of shop time, moving the engine, shipping the engine, aborting shop time for the car because the engine was wrong, cancelling this and that. They will say that they refunded me what I paid, but in the end they got back what they built for me(lost nothing) and I lost months of time, my patience, and thousands of dollars for the build that was aborted because the engine they promised me was literally unusable. Shop around, and find a good engine builder. They exist! I found one.. it's just not S&J. Finally, Kyle tried to negotiate with me on the phone to take this review down so he could prevent a future customer knowing how bad his business has really screwed up and THEN TURN it on the customer. I purchased a rebuilt engine for a fork truck for our company. When we tried to install the engine we noticed that the cylinders and heads were rusted. It took several weeks to get them to take the motor back to get reworked. After we got it back there was still hardly any compression in a couple of the cylinders. They refused to answer any of my emails or supply us with the materials to fix the issues ourselves. NOT a good company to do business with. Terrible customer service!!! DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING FROM THIS COMPANY!!! Instead of reaching out to make this right I bet the manager will be commenting on this post how horrible I was or how terrible our company is to work with. If I could give negative stars I would. Zero Integrity business. Back in the 90s when I was enrolled in the Automotive Program S&J was the place to go for a quality rebuild. They stood behind their product. Seems they are just another woke company looking to make a fast buck now. Our dispute is headed to court now so take my advice and stay far far away from S&J engines. So that Kyle doesn't declare this review "invalid", the order was under former Reno NV Valhalla Automotive owner Dan O. He started this nightmare. That being said I wouldn't use this company again to change a tire. Worst business experience of my life. Beware, choose someone else. They are not honest. And will say whatever they have to in order to avoid honoring their supposed warranty. When I got my motor back the first time it burned a quart of oil every 500 miles. To the point oil was coming out of the spark plug holes. I advised them of this at 2,000 miles and spoke to Dan. I said I think it is burning too much oil. Dan wasn't concerned stating it could be rings and said to call back if it continued. The next time I called I got Layne, per his request I sent pictures of the plugs to Layne. He said it was likely the rings. And to change the oil and plugs and run it to 5k to possibly allow the rings to seat. So I did and ran it another 1,000 miles. But it was burning so much oil I took it out of service and to another shop, as my original installer was a problem(see that review if you are interested), for disassembly and return shipping. S and J was very hard to contact and they fired Layne from the customer support line, claiming he was "making promises he couldn't keep", or so they told my new mechanic when he finally made contact weeks later. When I called, Larry claimed Layne went to sales, that he was more suited for that. We believe he was removed because he dared to be honest about the plugs and rings. Never talked to Layne again only Larry and Dan B. Three weeks later they sent a truck that had no way to secure the engine in transit. So my second installer (see my ValHalla Automotive review) had to use their own engine stand. When the motor finally got back to them lo and behold it was the installers fault...according to Dan B suddenly it was the valve covers and the PCV position in said valve covers. Additionally they claimed Valhalla installed the wrong PCV and plugged the breather port on the valve covers. Valhalla of course denied responsibility. Keep in mind this went on for a long time back and forth. But it was the same valve covers on the motor before they "remanufactured" (as they say) my motor. Before they got it, the worn out motor burned little oil. So that's where it stood for a few weeks. S and J blamed the installer so it was on them. I informed Valhalla what they were claiming and they made contact to find out further. S and J had a previous relationship with Dan O from Valhalla which is how I came to do business with S and J now regrettably in the first place. Dan O said they'd been his engine builder for 25 years on and on... I wasn't part of the conversation but unsurprisingly the blame shifted again. So then Dan sent me a picture of some beat up piston that was supposedly mine, saying it was "scored" and it was "fuel wash"...but it was the same fuel delivery system as before the so called "remanufacture" as they like to claim, It had a professionally tuned carburetor from Competition Carburetion, which I never had a problem with before they got their hands on it. I had the oil from the pan tested at Cashman Caterpillar labs and no fuel wash was found in the motor oil. According to mechanics I spoke with, for "fuel wash" to be causing this problem an extraordinary amount of fuel would be in the motor oil. Two third party mechanics (one the new tear down and installer) reported it was likely the wrong rings like Layne and Dan originally surmised. Furthermore my second installer checked the fuel delivery system and found no problem. If its pissing oil out of the spark plug inserts there is obviously oil gushing past the rings. Even I can understand that. So they (S andJ) eventually worked out some scheme with original installer to supposedly pay for the faulty engine work (again not included in any of the conversation or decisions). But I was on the hook for the uninstall and reinstall because I changed shops believing it would be covered based on the original idea the rings were the culprit and their apparently unattainable warranty. I no longer trusted the original installer (see review) believing according to Dan B, S and Js warranty would cover it no matter who did the warranty work. This was of course subject to where the blame ultimately fell...So months went by with no communication and Larry was rude when I called to inquire about my engine after 2 1/2 months of waiting with no one returning my calls and emails. Then when they finally sent the motor back after three months...it was not all assembled pretty and painted in a fancy box like the first time. it was wrapped in plastic on a wooden crate, and in pieces with my valve covers, pan, and water pump cover banged up with the paint scraped off. I called, and Dan sternly informed me "no parts leave our shop without being tanked" Weird that wasn't the case when I paid them 5k the first time...all said items were pai read more

Update S&J is currently fixing my engine and honoring the warranty. Once this has been completely resolved I'll make a final update. Thank you S&J for being a stand up company. I purchased a rebuilt Duramax long block from S&J engines which failed after 4000 miles (butted rings).  The report stated engine failed from abnormal combustion.  S&J denied my warranty claim, they said something externally heated up the entire bank on one side of the engine; such as a bad fuel injector.  All of my injectors were inspected and found in good condition.  At no time was anything noted out of ordinary during the 4000 miles I drove my truck (2008 GMC 3500), all temperatures were normal and oil change was conducted within the required 500 mile break in.  This is a stock truck no chip no deletions etc., I hope the owner reads this and can make it right. read more

I think there's a good chance these guys have gone out of business. Probably for good reason. A couple months ago I shipped them a cylinder head for a Ford Inline 6 for rebuilding (because they didn't have one) as part of the purchase of a complete rebuilt engine. I confirmed that the head arrived at their shop and now I can't get anyone to respond to emails, phone calls, or even messages through their website. I'm afraid I've lost my cylinder head and money. On May 2, 2022 I finally picked up my Ranger Truck from K & M. Developments since my last review -S & J finally decided to change their position and warranty the 2.9 motor that K & M sent in for inspection, repair or replacement. S & J said they re-manufactured the motor all over again, putting in over $900 in new parts all covered under warranty. They also covered the shipping both ways. No labor coverage however. So I'd have to say they did mostly honor the warranty with a lot of back and forth effort. Should be all good right? Well I'm not going to put anymore work or money into this project or point any fingers in any one direction. But with a lot of new parts and labor cost on the installation it has a rough vibration and seemingly little power. At least I have a motor back in the truck, and the truck runs. I now have a better chance of selling it and try to recover some of my investment. read more

I advise everyone NOT to do business with them. Crappy work and nothing but excuses. They send an engine without oil pressure and full of metal shavings. After eternal back and forth they finally sent another engine because the first one was beyond repair as they said. The second engine was just as bad. They probably sent the same one again. Update had to buy another block( $1600 )from Casey at s&j he gave me a discount (that was nice) and then I spent $2200 on install. I Originally spent $2400 on 1st block plus $1500 install Then I called s&j about the noisy top end they sent lifters out (I just wanted another engine) but I went ahead and spent the $1650 +$300 on valve adjustments, intake removal to check lifters and #4 stud back out. After spending close to $10,000 all said and done The new block from s&j is running great 10hrs in!!!!! Casey is having my old engine picked up for a refund of $1600 read more

Well your 1st statement about the heat tabs being melted are incorrect the 1st time it blew up and the head gaskets went the heat tabs were not melted so subsequently everything post that is also full of Misinformation. read more

Out of all the engines purchased there has only been one warranty claim and S&J's response was quick and professional. S&J rebuilt our boat motor in 2016. On July 5th, 2018, there was an internal explosion within the motor. This led to our boat catching fire and sinking in 200 feet of water. S&J explained that the boat is at the bottom of the ocean and therefore there is nothing they can do related to the warranty on the engine. The warranty expired in April 2018. Deeply concerned their manufacturing could have led to the death of all those on board. read more

Engine registered on dip as having oil but it was obviously not circulating in engine as it should have been. S&J Engines, Inc. picked the engine up from auto shop and kept it. I have owned a auto repair shop for 19 years . We purchased at engine from S&J for a customer. Approx 2 mouth after install the cam plug fell out. The vehicle was towed in with oil all over the Vehicle. S&J paid there repair but not the $150.00 tow. We replace the cam plug clean entire vehicle and sent them on the way. Two months latter Vehicle was towed back in with cylinder head gasket blown. S & J authorized the repair at Aprox $1000.00. We repair the Vehicle and sent them on there way . This time THEY DID NOT PAY for the repair or the $150.0 tow. After reviewing Yelp and others I found out that we should not have purchased a Engine from them. We should have look at yelp first. We took care of our customer now they should take care of there's. We are pursuing small claim's at this time. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

I'm on my 2nd set of motors from S&J after trying to replace the original 350's my boat had. Burning oil in one and a rough idle in the other. I've spent more on mechanic and shop work than the boat and trailer cost me originally. I'm done. Horrible company. I had them rebuild my engine, and asked that they specifically retain all the original parts for inspection (Which hey are legally required to do so under RCW 46.71.021). Called them to resolve, and they apologized for the mistake. Called the same person back again when we were unable to locate the parts from their junk pile, and they claimed I had never requested them back. They are a bunch of liars. Threw away the warranty info. If I have engine problems, I'm just going to file a lawsuit. I won't trust them to ever do repair work again. You can bet they didn't want me to see the old parts and inspect the work. I hope this company sinks. read more

I've purchased four motors from them in the last year and a half, and have been pleased with the service and workmanship. The prices are incredibly reasonable (probably what you get from WA with no state income tax. Lower overhead = lower cost of business). Anyways, at the end of the day, they've been upfront with costs, shipping, core charges, warranty information, etc. I don't blame any company for having "fine print" for warranty. There are stipulations on all warranties, everywhere. It's to keep the customer safe, for specificity, and to keep the company safe from potential predatory customers. I got my engine fast when I first bought it. My mechanic called S&J and informed them the engine was tight and hard to turn over they informed my mechanic that it was normal and to use a torque wrench. Mechanic informed S&J that they never had to do that to any engine. I had the mechanic put a new radiator water-pump, high water temp gauge, oil pressure gauged gas tank oil sending unit when I bought this engine. Mechanic called S&J again to inform them that the engine turned over but oil pressure was low. S&J informed him that it was normal.I went back to my mechanic at 500 miles to change the oil as required.Oil was changed and I informed them the oil pressure was not improving, at 900 miles I called the mechanic and informed him my engine locked up. We called S&J to inform them the mech took pictures and informed them the oil pump was broken. S&J received the engine and provided a diagnostic report from their own workers informing us that the problem was a cooling issue. The heat tabs showed it was a cooling problem. My question to them could it be because of low oil pressure they said no. My water pump never leaked and I never had a high water temp showing. Its not worth getting a lawyer so I paid them to send it back to me so I can use the engine core to get a rebuilt else where, they said it would be sent ASAP I've been waiting. My Mechanic and I believe it was a oil pressure issue I leave this up to you to think about S&J. read more

Extremely pleased with the engines and the help I got from S&J engines. I bought a 454 marine engine three years ago and it works super, has very low hours on it , however it runs great and pushes my 27 ft searay just fine. I have had to replace my 5.3 vortec engine in my Silverado truck and bought a new long block with tin about two weeks ago. Sill working on it , waiting for parts to arrive, but I have faith in S&J engines that I will have no problems at all. Casey is great about getting back with you promptly and or sending you to the proper experts and S& J. Dan is Super on helping and guiding you should any questions come up. They have a great warranty, however I would mention it is the mechanics / owners responsibility to make sure you put these engines in with all new belts, fan clutches, all new sensors, cam, crank, coolant, and oil pressure sensors, and belt tensioners with new belt pulley's. Have your radiator tested and put new thermostat, housing, and new waterpump. and you should be fine. I would expect anyone should do this anyway, not only to protect the engine, but to make sure you will not have the displeasure of pulling an engine again. Only makes sense to be on the safe side. I cannot stress enough when putting in a new engine to put all new on it also. Use the oil they provide, with zink for break in oil, and change the oil religiously. Also use a top grade oil recommended by your vehicles maintenance and what S&J recommends. I totally recommend S&J Engines to my friends . I live in Northern Michigan, and they are in Spokane, WA. I have bought rebuilt engines in southern Michigan and they were junk. I took a chance on S&J Engines and was glad I did. These guys are the heavyweights of the rebuilding industry and treat everyone as a valuable customer. I hope they are always around. So five stars for S&J Engines, why the other non five stars have commented I am not sure why, but I have had great support and strong engines from this company. read more

Another update. Put a S&J motor in my 2000 F-150 5.4 liter 5 years ago now. Around 50K miles and everything is as good as it was the day I installed it. Never uses any fluids at all. No leaks no problems. I have used 2 of S&J motors now and am very happy. Getting ready to put a new small block in my old Nova. Will be talking to you soon. Thanks again for the quality engines. My family have gotten two of our engines (mercury mountaineer and ford mustang long blocks) re-manufactured by S and J over the past 3 years and they are great! The mustang recently had problems but S and J fixed it and got it back to us very quickly, all with fantastic customer service along the way! A lot of these negative reviews involve the failure to submit the warranty information, which is a user error and should not be held against the business. They were true to their word regarding everything covered on the warranty, including labor reimbursement for self-installation. Made for some great bonding time for my dad and I. I'd recommend S and J to anyone needing a new engine! Great work! read more

S and J does not care about its finished product or the customer that buys it. We had to fix a poorly assembled 5VZ Toyota engine for a customer that had another shop install this garbage engine. The crankshaft timing gear was damaged during installation of the timing components by S and J making the engine not rev past 3k rpm. After that was fixed engine had a bad knock, eventually found lots of silicone in the crankcase from sloppy assembly. Likely the silicone was blocking an oiling passage causing the knock. Dan will not call you back. They don't pay in a timely fashion for warranty work. DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE! read more
