There are some broken stones and I don't like that the stones that are flat to the ground get covered over with cut grass and leaves. I'm afraid that they might disappear entirely. There are lots of roads through the cemetery and places where you can stop and walk. It's really beautiful with all of the old trees. I only go in here to take pictures to put online for people doing the genealogical research. I love Cemeteries and this is a really nice one.

A place to…read morerest The Greenwood Cemetery was established in 1858, which means it is an old graveyard but certainly not a really ancient cemetery by New England standards. Many of the graves do date back well over a hundred years but the cemetery is still accepting new arrivals. A very nice combination of extremely dated and worn graves and monuments combined with nice new and shiny ones. Many of the headstones are very cool and unique. Some huge obelisks and tombs right next to very simple crosses that are now impossible to read. All kinds of very personal and distinctive ways of remembering people now gone from this world. A very peaceful place that is quiet, scenic and at the same time historical. A relaxing place to visit a loved one now departed or to just wander around the many old graves and wonder about the people now at rest.

Ancient and peaceful…read more The Pachaug Cemetery is an old graveyard that sort of rambles through several acres. Lots of ancient trees and large shrubbery, the entire cemetery is surrounded by a lovely stone wall. A very old and worn looking gate welcomes visitors into the graveyard. Most of the graves date from the 19th century but there are some newer ones and also a couple of older and worn sections that have graves from well into the 18th century. Many of the older ones are very difficult to read and obviously have seen a lot of wind, ice and snow over the centuries. Many of the memorials are fairly basic and simple but there are some modest obelisks, mostly from the mid 19th century as well as some more massive and elaborate stones. A cool old graveyard that has a nice variety of different shapes and styles of stones. A lovely place that even the most discriminating departed must feel at peace in.

It was the Jewish organization established in 1906 by Chesed Shel Emes. It is also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Warwick #11. As I said, crowded but there is enough room to drive through. Most of the roadways are smooth though there is only enough space for one vehicle in each direction. The cemetery is the final resting place for jazz musician Lew Sherwood (1903-1971). was the featured vocalist with Eddy Duchin & His Orchestra during the band's greatest years, from 1933 to 1941, and was the band's primary trumpet soloist and one of its musical arrangers. There is a large polished granite Memorial wall and annual Memorial Day ceremony is held here at which the names of those Veterans who died during the prior year are unveiled. A very crowded…read moreneighborhood Lincoln Park is a Hebrew cemetery that is still open for new arrivals. The first thing that struck me was how crowded certain areas were. I've seen very old graveyards where the gravestones were placed close together but I don't ever think I've seen one quite this packed. Since I haven't been to many Hebrew Cemeteries I don't know if this is a common practice or unique to this particular graveyard. Others areas were very open which made quite a contrast. The cemetery is lovely and has some unique and very beautiful memorials. Lots of stones that were carved to resemble tree stumps and some very oddly shaped gravestones. The Hebrew practice of placing small stones on the gravesites out of respect was also very prevalent and added a very poignant and personal touch to this beautiful cemetery. A truly wonderful and fascinating cemetery that is a very lovely and reflective reminder of those that have lived before us and have now moved on.

A peaceful place…read more The Cedar Lane Cemetery was established in 1861 and was originally only one acre. But as people on the island insisted on dying, the non sectarian cemetery kept expanding until it's now almost ten acres It use to have a cool entrance on the west side but since the new highway was built the only way to really get into the graveyard is now from the south and Cedar Lane. The cemetery is very quiet and unassuming. Most of the memorials are small and modest, no huge obelisks or gigantic and ostentatious gravesites. Just very quiet reminders of who was here in days past.

It is listed in the land records located in the North Smithfield Town Hall. Any reference made to Bank or Old Bank Burial Ground, pertains to a section of the present day Union Cemetery. Some of the stones date back to the 1700s. My husband's grandparents and great-grandparents lie here. We met with Doug, the grounds keeper and he was very helpful with information.

HPL isn't the only notable internment...there are many scientists, authors, congressmen and even several Civil War Veterans also! Not to mention the fall foliage and utterly peaceful tranquility of the entire place! The entrance is a little hidden....it's at the end of a long stone wall with several other closed entrances, so it almost fools you into thinking it's closed. If you're looking for HPL's grave, the family plot is at the intersection of Pond Avenue and Avenue B and very easy to find. The website has an interactive map that is somewhat helpful, except that it gets blurry when you try to zoom in - but good enough to figure it out.
