Lot of very old graves here, many dating back into the 1600's. Other s are just about gone, worn down to nubs that are impossible to read. This is a very cool graveyard with a whole lot of history. Fascinating going around from grave to grave reading the inscriptions. The ancient town green is here too and the Commons Graveyard Is actually right on the green. A cool old bell guards on side while a church is on the other. History and the feel of the past just permeates the entire area. Not a fancy cemetery with a lot of rich and opulent graves. Some pretty cool ones like a statue of a colonel and some small obelisks but all the markers and memorials blend together quite nicely with the ancient trees and wonderful old houses of the area. A graveyard that has been here for a long time. And I suspect one that will still be here long after I am gone.

This is the final resting place of Oliver Hazard Perry (hero of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie), by far the cemetery's most famous resident. As well as his younger brother, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, many other minor to moderate national and local celebrities of mid- to late-nineteenth century vintage occupy the grounds. The Oliver Hazard Perry monument is the grandest in a cemetery profuse with obelisks and is worth a side trip to the cemetery for anyone with an interest in naval history. Island Cemetery and its older neighbor the Common Burial Ground are jointly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is interesting to compare the gravestone architecture from the colonial-era Common Burial Ground to the later era of the Island Cemetery.

If it wasn't for the fences it would be very difficult to tell where one ended and another started. There are thousands of graves here and some of the most wealthy and famous Newport residents were laid to rest in this graveyard. Of course with very rich people usually comes very large and opulent memorials. There are indeed some very impressive gravestones but plenty of more modest ones too. The cemetery was started in the mid 19th century so the real old graves are found in other graveyards. Many of the rich and famous people here are know only to people knowledgeable with Newport history but others like Oliver Hazard Perry, the famous naval commander and hero, will probably ring a bell with most people. It's interesting to look at some of the very elaborate and obviously expensive graves but the more mundane ones are touching too. Just so many and different ones. Lots of people from lots of places. The one thing that they all share is that they are all no longer alive..

It continued as the town's cemetery until it finally closed in 1994. The ancient graveyard contains over 3,000 residents including 26 veterans from the Revolutionary War, 62 from the Civil War and scores of others from various other wars and conflicts. The graveyard is located right next to the present town hall on a nice spot on the Barrington River and nice views of the river are possible from several places in the cemetery. Although the graveyard started out as only one half acre, it expanded several times throughout the centuries and now is a sprawling place that takes a while to walk through. Lots of different types of memorials in the graveyard but most tend to be modest. Of course some of the real old ones are now impossible to read and are slowly returning to the earth, the names and memories long forgotten. Princes Hill is a cool and fascinating ancient graveyard in a lovely location right on the Barrington River. A place where many of the town's veterans are buried and a cemetery that has seen a lot of centuries pass by.

Not really old, but old enough to be interesting since it contains a wide variety of different memorials. One of the most fascinating thing about the cemetery is the massive chunk of rose quartz that is located in the graveyard. Must weigh several tons and is almost certainly not indigenous to the cemetery, which means someone took a whole lot of effort to bring the huge stone here. There is no inscription on the stone so exactly when it was brought to the graveyard will remain unknown. The cemetery also has a nice little pond on the west side and some fairly large and interesting gravestones. No obelisks because they weren't quite in style yet but there are some pretty massive gravestones. A pleasant cemetery for a walk that is actually close to several other old graveyards. Flat ground and nice old trees makes it a cool place to spend a bit of time, if for nothing else just to check out the fabulous piece of quartz.

I've seen very old graveyards where the gravestones were placed close together but I don't ever think I've seen one quite this packed. Since I haven't been to many Hebrew Cemeteries I don't know if this is a common practice or unique to this particular graveyard. Others areas were very open which made quite a contrast. The cemetery is lovely and has some unique and very beautiful memorials. Lots of stones that were carved to resemble tree stumps and some very oddly shaped gravestones. The Hebrew practice of placing small stones on the gravesites out of respect was also very prevalent and added a very poignant and personal touch to this beautiful cemetery. A truly wonderful and fascinating cemetery that is a very lovely and reflective reminder of those that have lived before us and have now moved on.
