A lovely old…read morecemetery The Hillside Cemetery is located on an inlet of the Sakonnet River in the quaint old town of Tiverton, Rhode Island. A lovely place for a walk with distant views of the river and some nice rolling hills. The cemetery is quite huge with both new and very old parts. The oldest graves date back to the 18th century and of course there are others that look older but are now impossible to read. Lots of very cool and unique memorials and gravestones complete with unusual and archaic names and symbols. Some of the stones still look new and fresh while the softer stones are sometimes broken and worn down to virtually nothing. Hillside is a lovely old cemetery in a lovely old town. Many old graveyards have a spooky and morbid feel to them but not this one. I wouldn't exactly call it cheerful but it is a beautiful and historic area and a very nice place for a very peaceful stroll.

The grounds are in excellent condition, with winding paths, mature trees, and a quiet dignity that makes it easy to linger. The primary attraction for many tourists is Lizzie Borden's tomb, which is surprisingly simple to locate. Proceed directly down the central road from the main entrance on Prospect Street. A fork will appear after 200 yards or so; bear left and keep going until you come to a little rotary. Just off the road to the right is the Borden family plot; park close by and stroll toward it. Lizzie's stone is plain and level, bearing only her name: "Lizzie." Her parents and sister Emma are among the many Bordens buried there, and it's part of a wider family cluster. The cemetery itself is quiet. Historic without being overgrown. Solemn without feeling oppressive. The kind of place where memory feels tangible, especially when you're standing among the names that shaped one of America's most enduring mysteries. A man named…read morePatrick St Patrick cemetery is a graveyard that dates to the mid 19th century. Not old by the standards of most New England cemeteries but it does have an interesting combination of very simple and plain gravestones combined with some newer and unique ones. There are some of the popular 19th obelisks but no really massive ones. Most of the memorials are of the smaller and more modest kind. The graveyard is in excellent condition and it is obvious that many of the grave sites are still visited and well taken care of. The name of the cemetery is somewhat interesting. Most people assume that it is named after the famous St Patrick that was kidnapped from Scotland and became famous in Ireland. Who went around preaching the gospel and ended up writing a totally incomprehensible little book that has been the subject of much controversy over the years. But local legend has that the graveyard was actually named for a different Patrick. Patrick Lenihan was the founder of the parish and actually bought the land and established the cemetery and was so loved by the people of the church that many people choose to believe that they named the cemetery in his honor. Unfortunately Patrick lived only until the age of 32 was buried in his cemetery in 1857. Perhaps the truth will never be known but it doesn't really matter. No matter which Patrick the graveyard was really named after it remains a lovely, thoughtful and very peaceful place

Unfortunately, it is in a state of neglect and many of the historical tombs and stones have fallen to the ground or have been damaged. The Preservation Society has alerted the city about this and hopefully something will be done to bring this back to its former glory. Some of the history behind this historical cemetery, in 1834, the Grace Episcopal Church purchased more than four acres of land on the South side of Providence for use as a burial ground. By 1843, the site encompassed nine acres within the triangular-shaped, 8500+ plot cemetery at the intersection of Broad Street and Elmwood Avenue, the gateway to the south side of Providence. From its original inception, the cemetery was designed with great care and attention to detail. All of the burial plots were arranged symmetrically, in diamond-shaped sections separated by avenues named after trees. "Cemetery Square" occupies the center of the cemetery and is marked by a small, diamond-shaped area. Between 1859 and 1860, a house in the Gothic Carpenter style was built on the property to serve as a caretaker's lodge. This cemetery has great historical significance, as the backgrounds of many interred in the Grace Church Cemetery represent the growth and development of this section of the City of Providence. Various groups are represented, including mill workers, veterans of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, as well as World Wars I and II, political and church leaders, and representation from the Armenian community. An independent archivist has estimated that there are 256 veteran burials in Grace Church Cemetery.

They keep the grounds very clean here , and they don't just throw your precious decorations out immediately they allow your decorations to your loved ones to stay for a little bit. It's a little hard to navigate on your own for the first time , but if you go to the main office they will help you out give you a map or guide you. The chapels are beautiful ! I attended a burial here and it was very beautiful , they made a sad moment into something understanding and accepting. The family who runs this are very nice. The stones are very pretty and the upkeep makes me very happy. Cemetery's that are well kept are hard to find, but this one is one of them. There's a lot of water surrounding , if you do want to stay around and walk around ( I have numerous family members here. ) There's a church directly next to this site as well with its own lot, if you want to attend church.

A very crowded…read moreneighborhood Lincoln Park is a Hebrew cemetery that is still open for new arrivals. The first thing that struck me was how crowded certain areas were. I've seen very old graveyards where the gravestones were placed close together but I don't ever think I've seen one quite this packed. Since I haven't been to many Hebrew Cemeteries I don't know if this is a common practice or unique to this particular graveyard. Others areas were very open which made quite a contrast. The cemetery is lovely and has some unique and very beautiful memorials. Lots of stones that were carved to resemble tree stumps and some very oddly shaped gravestones. The Hebrew practice of placing small stones on the gravesites out of respect was also very prevalent and added a very poignant and personal touch to this beautiful cemetery. A truly wonderful and fascinating cemetery that is a very lovely and reflective reminder of those that have lived before us and have now moved on.

It was the Jewish organization established in 1906 by Chesed Shel Emes. It is also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Warwick #11. As I said, crowded but there is enough room to drive through. Most of the roadways are smooth though there is only enough space for one vehicle in each direction. The cemetery is the final resting place for jazz musician Lew Sherwood (1903-1971). was the featured vocalist with Eddy Duchin & His Orchestra during the band's greatest years, from 1933 to 1941, and was the band's primary trumpet soloist and one of its musical arrangers. There is a large polished granite Memorial wall and annual Memorial Day ceremony is held here at which the names of those Veterans who died during the prior year are unveiled. There are some broken stones and I don't like that the stones that are flat to the ground get covered over with cut grass and leaves. I'm afraid that they might disappear entirely. There are lots of roads through the cemetery and places where you can stop and walk. It's really beautiful with all of the old trees. I only go in here to take pictures to put online for people doing the genealogical research. I love Cemeteries and this is a really nice one.

A place to…read morerest The Greenwood Cemetery was established in 1858, which means it is an old graveyard but certainly not a really ancient cemetery by New England standards. Many of the graves do date back well over a hundred years but the cemetery is still accepting new arrivals. A very nice combination of extremely dated and worn graves and monuments combined with nice new and shiny ones. Many of the headstones are very cool and unique. Some huge obelisks and tombs right next to very simple crosses that are now impossible to read. All kinds of very personal and distinctive ways of remembering people now gone from this world. A very peaceful place that is quiet, scenic and at the same time historical. A relaxing place to visit a loved one now departed or to just wander around the many old graves and wonder about the people now at rest.
