It was the Jewish organization established in 1906 by Chesed Shel Emes. It is also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Warwick #11. As I said, crowded but there is enough room to drive through. Most of the roadways are smooth though there is only enough space for one vehicle in each direction. The cemetery is the final resting place for jazz musician Lew Sherwood (1903-1971). was the featured vocalist with Eddy Duchin & His Orchestra during the band's greatest years, from 1933 to 1941, and was the band's primary trumpet soloist and one of its musical arrangers. I've seen very old graveyards where the gravestones were placed close together but I don't ever think I've seen one quite this packed. Since I haven't been to many Hebrew Cemeteries I don't know if this is a common practice or unique to this particular graveyard. Others areas were very open which made quite a contrast. The cemetery is lovely and has some unique and very beautiful memorials. Lots of stones that were carved to resemble tree stumps and some very oddly shaped gravestones. The Hebrew practice of placing small stones on the gravesites out of respect was also very prevalent and added a very poignant and personal touch to this beautiful cemetery. A truly wonderful and fascinating cemetery that is a very lovely and reflective reminder of those that have lived before us and have now moved on.

Not really old, but old enough to be interesting since it contains a wide variety of different memorials. One of the most fascinating thing about the cemetery is the massive chunk of rose quartz that is located in the graveyard. Must weigh several tons and is almost certainly not indigenous to the cemetery, which means someone took a whole lot of effort to bring the huge stone here. There is no inscription on the stone so exactly when it was brought to the graveyard will remain unknown. The cemetery also has a nice little pond on the west side and some fairly large and interesting gravestones. No obelisks because they weren't quite in style yet but there are some pretty massive gravestones. A pleasant cemetery for a walk that is actually close to several other old graveyards. Flat ground and nice old trees makes it a cool place to spend a bit of time, if for nothing else just to check out the fabulous piece of quartz.

Griffin Street Cemetery has a ton of history and stands proud as the first cemetery ever built in New Bedford. Early settlers are buried here as well as other local figures of historical significance. It would be a great joy to see this location pop up on the map and become part of the citizens memories. The area around the land is encroaching upon it and eventually it might be gone I fear. It is possible that I am a bit paranoid but it is a healthy paranoia stemming from my love for history and landmarks. If people conduct a search this very second on this location they will find articles and articles of information. New Bedford's library has a few pieces of material that people can read up on and they are actually good reads. It goes without saying that if we care about our home city, we can at the least, invest some of our time in showing them gratitude. To the people who don't live here or have lived here, I rated the place 5 stars out of respect for the dead. Regardless of whether a person was good or bad, we all deserve our peace.

It has a few larger crypts and more elaborate gravestones but most tend to be small and simple. The cemetery has a small pond in the middle of the land and lots of very old looking trees. Many veterans, especially from World War 1, are buried here and the grounds are very well maintained. There are roads that wind through all parts of the cemetery and many flowers and special personal items are included with the memorials. A very pleasant cemetery to talk an easy walk through.

Its got a fair amount of history to it as well and it's home to many veterans from both world wars. The world war veteran graves are taken care of by the workers and every national holiday that celebrates their memory will see their graves receive a token of appreciation and respect ranging from a bouquet of flowers or some other symbol. I currently have my aunt, uncle, and grandparents buried there so when I pay the area a visit I see what goes on around there. If you are the type of person like myself that likes to take walks through cemeteries then you will be happy to know that this is the place to do it. It's peaceful and quiet (not all cemeteries are surprisingly!). There is a greenhouse / flower shop right nearby that is an ideal location for a visit if you're interested in buying something.

The dead probably don't care so much, but us living who visit them would enjoy the serenity. This is not a creepy horror-movie cemetery, no, this is the quiet contemplative kind, where it's socially acceptable to talk to yourself and the ones pushing daisies from below. The staff seem to take good care of the grounds, keeping the grass trim and occasionally planting those tiny flags on holidays. There's a golf course next door... I wonder if the old retired golfers look over here and feel differently than I do...

The original cemetery than was here dates back to around 1711 and the new one is just sort of an extension. The graveyard is fairly modest and doesn't have huge or imposing monuments. There are some small obelisks and lots of beautiful designs on the older stones. Many of the new graves are very well cared for and have lots of flowers and other tokens of affection. Unfortunately some of the stones have been toppled, hopefully by natural forces and age and not by some knucklehead intent on vandalism. Some of the really old ones, probably from the early part of the 18th century, are almost worn away by the years and elements. Acushnet Cemetery is a lovely and peaceful place with stone walls, interesting gravestones and beautiful flowers and plants. A great part of the history of the small town.

It continued as the town's cemetery until it finally closed in 1994. The ancient graveyard contains over 3,000 residents including 26 veterans from the Revolutionary War, 62 from the Civil War and scores of others from various other wars and conflicts. The graveyard is located right next to the present town hall on a nice spot on the Barrington River and nice views of the river are possible from several places in the cemetery. Although the graveyard started out as only one half acre, it expanded several times throughout the centuries and now is a sprawling place that takes a while to walk through. Lots of different types of memorials in the graveyard but most tend to be modest. Of course some of the real old ones are now impossible to read and are slowly returning to the earth, the names and memories long forgotten. Princes Hill is a cool and fascinating ancient graveyard in a lovely location right on the Barrington River. A place where many of the town's veterans are buried and a cemetery that has seen a lot of centuries pass by.
