I'd have to say this is probably one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever visited...just wow! I came here to visit the final resting place of my fave author, HP Lovecraft, but ended up staying a good while and exploring the gorgeous grounds! HPL isn't the only notable internment...there are many scientists, authors, congressmen and even several Civil War Veterans also! Not to mention the fall foliage and utterly peaceful tranquility of the entire place! The entrance is a little hidden....it's at the end of a long stone wall with several other closed entrances, so it almost fools you into thinking it's closed. If you're looking for HPL's grave, the family plot is at the intersection of Pond Avenue and Avenue B and very easy to find. The website has an interactive map that is somewhat helpful, except that it gets blurry when you try to zoom in - but good enough to figure it out. read more

Such a beautiful cemetery, park, resting place, with peaceful walking and meditating surroundings. A true gem in the city of Providence!

I very much enjoy walking through cemeteries as a general rule. They are peaceful, sacred spaces and the love and thoughtfulness put into the memorials is lovely to see. I have only been here once before, quite a few years ago for a burial and it is a comforting space. The headstones are spaced nicely, the memorials are poignant, there are plenty of trees, a few ponds and it hugs the Seekonk River providing a nice breeze. There are plenty of roadways to walk on, or you can wander the lawns and read some of the headstones. The headstone artwork in many of the older 'historical' cemeteries follow similar styles and meanings. Here, you have a variety of stones and memorials based on religion, profession, ethnicity and some are just works or art. So much to appreciate while walking under the trees, with the wind on your face, getting some exercise or visiting a deceased family members site. There are several 'family plots' and mausoleums. They do have a number of open spaces and it looks like there is a new section in the northwest corner if you are looking to purchase some plots. The grounds are very well maintained, even in the early Spring when I visited. There is a small parking lot immediately after entering turn left and it will be on your left across from what looks like the Chapel. I did not see any 'rules' that others have mentioned, but there were a few trash cans here and there, a couple of benches by the pond we passed and they did have security in vehicles keeping an eye on the grounds which I very much appreciate as these beautiful memorials deserve to be treated with care and respect. read more

I know what you're thinking- who in their right-mind would leave a yelp review of a cemetery??! My mom was visiting and wanted to go visit this historical cemetery for whatever reason. So I typed in the cemetery into google and then I saw it-- the yelp reviews of the cemetery! I was awestruck; because, as someone who is an avid yelper, I thought, "has the yelp community gone too far? What the hell are we gonna review?" My mom and I ended up reading some of these reviews and we were hysterically laughing because who in their right mind would decide to go running or power walk--or even weirder.. have a picnic-- in a cemetery?! But I will say this- the cemetery is really, really pretty. HP Lovecraft is buried there and there is so much Providence history that's on display. read more

I visited Swan Point Cemetery on a cold and wet March day with my husband. I grew up in RI and my elementary school took trips to Swan Point to make grave rubbings. This place is beautiful and historic, extraordinarily well kept. Lots to see and appreciate beyond Lovecraft. It's fascinating to see Rhode Island history evolve from colonial times to today through the headstones. Update: About a year after this review, I was at Swan Point again, when my mom passed away and we had her memorial service in the chapel there. The chapel is lovely and has an adjacent room for reception. Everyone we dealt with - both in planning and during the service - was fantastic, kind, and utterly professional. Exactly what you want in a funeral experience. Would 100% recommend. read more

I have driven by this Cemetary many times. I've walked Blackstone Blvd as well but never entered this Holy Ground. My favorite place to walk, Slater Park, has had a few crazy bicyclists going way to fast. Yesterday I decided to do the Blvd but the cinder was hurting my legs. As I walked into Swan Point I was impressed with the very visible rules. No fast bike riding and proper clothing. There was also security present. The place is beautifully landscaped and the architecture on the stones is on par with Mount Auburn Cemetery and spots along The Freedom Trail. Thank you to Swan Point for opening your gates for walkers. I would add pictures but one rule was no videos or pictures without permission. Next walk I will ask for permission. read more

Before you go judging me and thinking I'm a goth or Wiccan, let me just tell you that Swan Point Cemetery is freakin' stunning. More like a historical park or public garden, this is an East Side treasure that may be one of the most beautiful places in New England. Preach. On any given day, you'll find people strolling through, taking in the peace and quiet it provides. It's a great spot to go for a long, undisturbed run as the roads loop around and everything leads to the main gate so you can't get lost. It's well kept with very little of the creepy factor (which, contrary to your snap judgment, I DO feel in most cemeteries). If you're from an old New England family, chances are you'll find some of your relatives interred here. I had no idea that the Angell's of my own line were here until I came across them. It's worth checking the listings at the main gate to see if you're ancestors are among them, because lemme tell ya, it was a feeling like I've never had before: it gave me a sense of connectedness to the place I live more than actually living here! On a beautiful, sunny day when the Boulevard Walking Path is crowded and you don't feel like shopping on Wickenden Street, do yourself a favor and come here. Don't be scared, kids! read more

Historic, charming, creepy, and cool. Swan Point Cemetery is all of these things and more. It is a fantastic place to walk or ride your bike (slowly) around and take in all of the rich history of Providence's predecessors. A lot of the graves date back to the seventeen and eighteen hundreds. There are tons of gorgeous trees, bushes and flowers that make it feel like a lovely park, rather than a morbid resting ground for the Providence dead. I am a big fan of wandering around New England's historic cemetery's. Not because I revel in the macabre, but because I find them to be so peaceful, non-touristy, and this one in particular is beautifully manicured and well kept. One highlight, which I'm sure that most horror and sci fi fans know, is that the legendary author, H.P. Lovecraft and his family rest in this cemetery. From what I hear, you aren't supposed to take pictures, but I cheated and snuck in a few quick photos. The fact that I live just down the block from this historic and amazing place is the icing on the cake. I almost feel as if I am a neighbor to some of Providence's most interesting VIPs. read more

Traveling through New England, on the worst possible day for a visit to the grave of HPL (Bright, sunny, 92 F.) visited the Phillips - Lovecraft plot. Stop in at the main office, where in the vestibule you'll find a computerized kiosk, type in the name of the deceased, choose from the list, and print out a map, which drops into a trough under the screen. Restrooms located in the next building to the left. Interesting visit. While there, a car with NY State plates pulled up, with two gentleman making a last stop in the US before returning to Austria. I'm 100% positive HPL receives more visitors than anyone else in Swan Point, so be sensitive to the fact that this is a cemetery, and there may be people here visiting missed loved ones- be appropriately respectful, do not practice any dark arts, or play Black Metal, or air guitar in tribute. Absolutely gorgeous place to take a walk and enjoy some quiet time. Beautiful fall foliage. If you walk to the very end of the cemetery you can stop and contemplate the ocean. Lots of majestic old headstones and crypts. I especially enjoyed one little crypt that seemed inspired by an ancient Egyptian tomb. Plenty of small benches and even a gazebo to stop and sit. Highly recommend this place if you need to escape and want a little peace and quiet. Aside from a small family picnicking at a gravestone and another lady walking the grounds I saw no one here. To find Lovecraft's grave: Enter through the front gates of the cemetery and drive straight ahead; at the Barnaby monument, turn left onto Junction Avenue and then bear right at the Daniels grave marker onto Pond Avenue; go as straight as you can until you reach a "T" intersection with Avenue B; the Phillips family plot is directly in front of you and Lovecraft's stone is behind the family monument. A beautifully laid-out, historic cemetery. I used to hang out here when I was a teenager... and it's still nice to visit, as we did last weekend. One innovation since Many Years Ago - they now have a computer at the front office where you can look up any grave and print out a map with directions to it. Very nifty! (because H.P. Lovecraft's grave isn't that easy to find, without one.) In addition to Mr. "I Am Providence," some of my relatives are here, as well as most of the deceased folks who lived on Power St. Which means lots of nice statuary and crypts! read more

Perhaps it's a bit strange... to be writing a review on a cemetery. I was scrolling through reviews in the Providence area and was surprised that Swan Point was even on the list... but that being said, here I am, writing a review. Swan Point Cemetery is gaaaaaorgeous. I mean really, beautifully stunning. It's massive in size, 200 acres to be exact. There are so many small and windy, twisty roads that lead to thousands and thousands of headstones (big and small,) mausoleums and statues. Also, some of those roads and steep bands lead you to the rivers side. Tons of flowers, plants and trees are planted all around. The cemetery grounds are more like a historical site rather than a resting place for the dead. Also, H.P. Lovecraft is buried here - "I am Providence." I've yet to find his grave, but I will one of these days! read more

A friend told me about Swan Point so I agreed to meet up with her for a walk. Wow, what a gorgeous place! Huge, old trees, shade intermixed with sun which I really like for walking (work up a sweat then cool down in the shade), gorgeous headstones to look at, great hills for a challenge when walking. Also, best part... not crowded at all! We went on an absolutely beautiful, perfect day weather-wise and I had a great morning. Next time I will spend more time looking at the various statues and head stones and maybe bring my camera. I also want to check out H.P. Lovecraft's grave. We drove to the back (along the left side) and parked overlooking the water, then did a couple of loops around. Also, great place for a picnic and just to relax and reflect on life. Someone asked me why I'd want to hang out at a cemetery...why not? Such a beautiful place should be enjoyed. I'll definitely be back many times this summer and looking forward to the Autumn colors there. I can imagine that must be really gorgeous as well. read more

This has to be the weirdest review I ever wrote. How do you rate a cemetery?! Especially if you have never been there for the actual service that is provides. However, I spend a particularly large amount of time at this specific place. So let me tell you what I know.... Swan Point Cemetery is one of the most lovely places on the East Side to go for a quiet stroll. The scenery, next to the river, with its impressive trees and landscaping, is only enhanced by the truly fascinating grave markers. (Told you this was going to be a weird review.) Since it is only open from dawn to dusk (NOT at night), it doesn't feel creepy or macabre. I used to go here quite often for quiet walks, but now I find myself there for a totally different reason. (OK, now I am moving on from weird to sacrilegious...) This is the best place on the east side to bring young kids to learn how to ride their bicycle. Nice smooth pavement, flat surfaces, minimal to no cars to worry about. It is a parent's dream! Now that my kid has the hang of cycling, but still not the hang of riding her bike on the neighborhood streets or on the Blackstone Blvd Speedway, Swan Point continues to be a great place for her to zoom around with little risk. read more

What a great place! You would think it would be depressing but it is actually peaceful! The grounds are complex & well kept. The history & beautiful statues are what draws me ( as a photographer & history buff). Just when you think the blackstone blvd. Is a beautiful place you stumble into this cemetery and find yourself immersed in art , history ect. A must see for cyclists/ walkers/ runners/ photographers...! This is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country -and I've visited a LOT of cemeteries. (no pun intended) Seriously though, I've been coming to this place, this ultra green oasis on the north-eastern edge of the city for years and years. In our youths my friends and I would come here at night because, well, we fancied ourselves "goth" and that was the thing to do. This was a destination for us the way Scarborough beach might be a "must go" for Guidos. Tons of us went, and I'm sure we weren't the first generation to do so. We'd go to drink, to dance, to smoke, to fuck and in general act young and foolish. One thing we never did was vandalize, or even leave trash behind. This place was, after-all, a sacred place. And everyone I've ever known has treated it that way. Into adulthood I'd always lived around the east side, countless apartments for over a decade, and I always ended up back in Swan Point (although mainly in the daylight hours) If I started a walk or a bike ride on a spring day I'd inevitably end up here. If that seems strange, keep in mind that in the days before public parks EVERYONE did this. Weekends in the 19th century would find local grave yards swarming with folks at play, as well as those at "rest". A few years back my best friend was cremated here. We waited as his remains were rendered. And we sat in the early spring sunshine and drank ourselves silly. And sometimes I go back. Sit. Think. Remember. And there's not really a better place in which to do this. (I can't believe I'm the fist person to review this place...) read more

Feeling touristy and frugal? Want to hang out by the water without getting your orange on? Or just want to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Providence (ha! jk)? I can't think of a more peaceful spot on the East Side to walk around on a sunny day (except maybe the nearby Butler Hospital grounds... but that would be related to psychotropic medications). All of Providence's founding families seem to be buried here with relatively well-preserved 18th and 19th century headstones and (dare I say?) spacious plots. Not exactly the vaults of Buenos Aires' Cementerio de la Recoleta, but enough obelisks and altars to satisfy one with a discerning marble tooth. My favorite part are the graves on the Eastern edge of the plot, which seem just about to fall off the cliff into the Seekonk River. Creepiest grave: a statue of two children snuggling together for their eternal rest. Gives a whole new meaning to the prayer "If I should die before I wake/ I pray the Lord my soul to take" and reminds me that not so long ago surviving childhood was a privilege not a guarantee. It can be a scavenger hunt to find H.P. Lovecraft or Ambrose Burnside's grave, but it's there are many gems along the way. Obviously this is a cemetery not a boardwalk, so you have to be a little bit somber and respectful, i.e. no inappropriate workout gear or hot weiners plz. read more

Had a great Wednesday afternoon walk through the macabre. Followed around a couple ghouls, and even saw a spirit. As the evening began to fall on this autumn twilight I found it necessary to pay my respects to providences native son the humble hp lovecraft. As I made my way back to the gate at the entrance I had found that the lively spirits had locked me and my companion in for the night. I've been here a few times, after a friend of mine recommended it to me as a nice place to go walking. My ONLY complaint is that I can't bring my pup there for a walk, but I understand that restriction. The view is stunning, wherever you are- the headstones (I find the old ones fascinating, and there is everything from simple stones to ornate statuary), the views of the river, the landscaping; it's all beautiful. Both of my parents and my youngest sister are buried at Swan Point......and probably a few of my other relatives. My dad was a Providence native. My husband and I now live in Florida but come north for about a month or so in the summer; we haven't visited the cemetery in a number of years but plan to do so this summer. I've tried describing it to different people, and they find my description of the landscaping and terrain difficult to comprehend (Florida cemeteries are flat and uninteresting with few if any plantings, not even trees!). We'll pick a day to come for a visit and, strange as it may seem to some, we look forward to our visit. read more

The Cemetery is always well manicured, I've never even seen rotting flowers by the graves. It's a quiet place full of so much history. The only sad thing being people think it's ok to walk their dogs here, have some respect folks..I love dogs as much as the next but a cemetery isn't the place for Fido to relieve himself. Quite a number of Civil War hero's are resting here as well, the most notable being Sullivan Ballou, who died for his country at the Battle of Bull run...Some of the oldest graves date from the 1600's, those are at the very back of the cemetery that boarders the Seekonk River. HP Lovecraft's final resting place is here also, many folks come around Halloween to leave offerings of small change, trinkets or simply a rock placed atop his stone, just to let him know we were there. You may run into trouble visiting him in October, security guards are hired, lights are placed so you can see his stone at night, RI usually has a set date, along with the Cemetery, to have a one week visiting time, after hours while It's dark, Its not the same in broad daylight. I could, and have spent entire days roaming around this awesome place. If you're open to it, and remain very, very quiet, you can hear the voices of those poor, lonely souls, willing you to pass by their grave stone and say their names aloud, for many of them, its the first time in a century that they've heard their names, or had a visit from anyone. The dead are dead ...yes...But as I stated, If you're open to it, you'll feel that pull...from one grave to the next...all they want is company. Please, always be aware of where you walk, some graves are not marked and they won't take too kindly to be trod upon, It's just a respect thing. Once you've been, and can feel what I'm talking about, I promise, it will be the first of many visits..It's a magical, spiritual place to be..enjoy your stay, but the gates close at 4pm. And above all, Please respect, respect, respect, the Cemetery rules and grounds themselves...And the many souls who rest there. We wouldn't want them to be upset and tag along home with anyone who does disrespect them, at least I wouldn't. A spirit moves in mysterious ways and won't think twice about haunting you if you, indeed disrespect them, Its a lesson in History, not an amusement park. Blessed be. read more
