HPL isn't the only notable internment...there are many scientists, authors, congressmen and even several Civil War Veterans also! Not to mention the fall foliage and utterly peaceful tranquility of the entire place! The entrance is a little hidden....it's at the end of a long stone wall with several other closed entrances, so it almost fools you into thinking it's closed. If you're looking for HPL's grave, the family plot is at the intersection of Pond Avenue and Avenue B and very easy to find. The website has an interactive map that is somewhat helpful, except that it gets blurry when you try to zoom in - but good enough to figure it out.

The grounds are in excellent condition, with winding paths, mature trees, and a quiet dignity that makes it easy to linger. The primary attraction for many tourists is Lizzie Borden's tomb, which is surprisingly simple to locate. Proceed directly down the central road from the main entrance on Prospect Street. A fork will appear after 200 yards or so; bear left and keep going until you come to a little rotary. Just off the road to the right is the Borden family plot; park close by and stroll toward it. Lizzie's stone is plain and level, bearing only her name: "Lizzie." Her parents and sister Emma are among the many Bordens buried there, and it's part of a wider family cluster. The cemetery itself is quiet. Historic without being overgrown. Solemn without feeling oppressive. The kind of place where memory feels tangible, especially when you're standing among the names that shaped one of America's most enduring mysteries. Oak Grove is worth the visit, regardless of your interest in real crime or your general admiration for well-maintained cemeteries. [Review 1090 of 2025 - 1240 in Massachusetts - 24644 overall]

The original cemetery than was here dates back to around 1711 and the new one is just sort of an extension. The graveyard is fairly modest and doesn't have huge or imposing monuments. There are some small obelisks and lots of beautiful designs on the older stones. Many of the new graves are very well cared for and have lots of flowers and other tokens of affection. Unfortunately some of the stones have been toppled, hopefully by natural forces and age and not by some knucklehead intent on vandalism. Some of the really old ones, probably from the early part of the 18th century, are almost worn away by the years and elements. It was established in 1655 and the oldest recorded grave is John Brown, the guy that actually purchased the land that the graveyard is on from the native Wampanoag tribe. The spooky old graveyard has lots of very old graves, memorials and plaques and if you take a look at the top of the old flagpole you will notice that it has a carved skull on top. A whole lot of famous colonial New England folks are buried here, including Elizabeth Tilley Howland who came over on the Mayflower and died in 1667 and Captain Thomas Willett, who became the first English mayor of New York. The ancient graveyard is an absolutely fascinating place filled with plaques and memorials about shipwrecks, wars and disasters. It looks a bit worn in places and could probably use a bit of TLC but then the scruffy look just adds to the spooky and weird ambiance. One of the coolest and historic colonial graveyards in New England. Over 1,000 graves here from 1622 up till 1993 and of course all kinds of hauntings and bizarre things have been seen in the area. An amazing and historic place to spend some time with the people of the past.

I tried to find out who owned it and finally got a hold of a gentleman who claimed to be a commisioner several years ago that told me that the Chinese bought it and that it was only mowed twice a year! My heart sank thinking that my grandparents couldve been flung! I havent been back to the cemetery in awhile as I live in a different state now but I am interested to see what can be done about the state of the plots and headstones. I understand that it is a historical place and that it is ancient. However there is no excuse for it to have been let go like it has been. I wanted to buy plots if there were any available so that I could be near my grandparents but I doubt there are any left. I would even look into purchasing the cemetery if I could get more info on it, so if anyone knows anything please let me know. tanyastrader@gmail.com

Many of the graves do date back well over a hundred years but the cemetery is still accepting new arrivals.
