5 stars are not enough. This is the very best sparkling wine and winery in the entire world (and I have been to some pretty fabulous ones). By way of background, I had only tried Sparkling Pointe twice before our visit yesterday (10-30-16): Once at Maroni's in Northport on 10-22-16 and just this past Friday, 10-28-16 at Sandbar in Cold Spring Harbor. As soon as the wine met my taste buds it was love at first gulp. I could not believe the delicious toasty, oaky, crisp taste with a suave buttery finish that left me longing for more. The refreshing yet not overpowering bubbles. The finesse. I knew IMMEDIATELY this was not just another sparkling wine, this was THE sparkling wine for me. I got home, starred at my vast collection of Moet Chandon, Veuve Clicquot (Brut and Rose), and Louis Roederer Cristal...and all of a sudden I felt they were inadequate. I could not fathom not having many more bottles of Sparkling Pointe. So my husband and I decided very much spontaneously and spare of the moment to pay a visit to the winery, located in Southold, NY only about an hour and a half from our home. Upon arrival I was impressed to find my country's flag and my birth city's license plates as well as beach cangas and carnaval costumes at the entrance, greeting me. I was also hugged by bossa nova playing on the meticulously scattered speakers. For a second I thought my husband planned this, because how could this possibly be true? What were the odds that the best sparkling wine I ever tasted was produced only an hour and a half from where I live, and is immersed in my birth culture? Then we proceeded to the counter where we met the most knowledgeable and courteous server, who also happens to be the membership coordinator for the winery. He was the most attentive and kind person I had ever come across in any service industry. Ever. We were able to sit outside on the comfortable wicker furniture (that made me feel as though I was in my own backyard) facing the vast and gorgeous vines. It was magical. When we looked at the menu, not only were the prices extremely reasonable, but the food pairings took the "coincidences" to yet another level. We were able to do a chocolate pairing with Vosges Chocolates, our FAVORITE chocolates in the world, as well as truffle cheese (which we adore), and local lavender honey (another favorite). I told our server how magical everything was and it seemed that I had died and gone to heaven, and I asked him about the membership because I sincerely don't believe I could ever live without this wine. He explained everything to us. And after I told him I am Brazilian he told me that the owners, Tom and Cynthia, love Brazil, and have a place in Rio. He said that they are usually there but were not there that day. We were sorry we missed them but were looking forward to our next (of many) visit to get a chance to meet them. All of a sudden, I hear a voice in my ear singing Samba do Aviao, and I turn around and have the pleasure of meeting Tom! He was this incredibly friendly and gracious host, who took us on his gulf cart to see the Cristo Redentor statue he has in the back of the vines, blessing the production. We took pictures and he took us on a tour of the premises, showed us where the magic happens, and explained the methode champenoise to us. Riddling, Disgoring, Dossage...My husband and I felt like experts. This experience took our love for wine, especially our newfound love for sparkling wine to another level. We then tried on the costume hats from Tom and Cynthia's fantasias when they participated in the desfile of Beija Flor samba school (many times). It's incredible to see someone love my culture so much without being born there. I was flattered. I was also impressed with Yemanja on the labels and cards. So beautiful and creative. Unfortunately we had to go to a prior engagement, so we hugged Tom goodbye and truly left feeling like we now made a new friend, who not only lives relatively close to us in NY but has an apartment close to my grandparents' in Rio. At the end we went to pay for the 6 bottles we purchased (because we certainly could not leave there empty handed) and were told by our same gracious server that the tasting was on them, as well as two flutes, and Tom even ran up to us before we left to give us a blanket with Sparkling Pointe logo on it, which I know I will make great use of during the next cold months by our outdoor fire pit. The entire experience was unreal. It was like a perfect dream you never want to wake up from. Every single wine I tasted there was incredibly delicious and I look forward to adding them all to our collection and to being back there, in this modern and sophisticated tasting room filled with great music and outstanding staff, for the rest of my life. You are missing out in life if you don't visit this winery. There is none like it anywhere, and certainly none like it in the entire East Coast. read more
