Get here early if you want to eat! It's freshly made to order, and the staff is very courteous and amazing. We had to wait a little to order and get our food. Totally worth it. It cost us cheaper to eat here than at the local Wendy's. They have specials every day and do not disappoint. We had the funnel cake fries as a treat and they were very good. This seems to be a spot a lot of locals attend. I can see why. It has an older fast food feel with super friendly staff. My wife and doughy we got the surf burger and they said the crab cakes were awesome. I had a borger and gator and it was seriously top 5 for me. Everyone loved the food. Amazing food at crazy low prices. We had a party of 12 and it only took us 20 mins for everyone to receive their order. Excellent service!! The group favorite was the beach burger which is a 1/4 lb fresh burger topped with a homemade crab cake., YES PLEASE!! The toppings were crisp. The sweet potato fries were delicious and not soggy. I had the flounder sandwich which was a bit thin, the catfish sandwich was way thicker! The only recommendations I could make for the owner would be butter toasted buns and less salt in the chowdah. We came here on a whim one Saturday afternoon. We took the corvette down to the beach and just cruised. When we got here it was pretty dead. The guy behind the counter was really friendly and told us about the daily specials, which there were about 15 different specials LOL. We got the fried gator tail. It was $5.99 and the pieces were sooooo small. They looked like popcorn shrimp or something. They were okay. I've had better. My husband got a burger which was GIANT! And it was soooo good. Juicy and tasty that was cooked perfectly. He also got some tater tots with it that were really good. I got the Rueben sandwich with the fries. The Ruben was really really good! It was a little thin but it packed a great flavor punch. Wish they added just a little more meat. Their sweet tea is so fresh and sweet just like momma used to make it back home. If you're in the area stop by and try it out. They also have some super cute Spanky's shirts with their little monkey mascot. read more

Spanky's is an excellent beach burger shack. For those of you complaining about ambiance etc, you didn't play outside enough as a kid and it shows. Mr. Spanky is always at the counter when I go and always provides excellent service and an anecdote or two. The burger is delicious and for under $10 can you really complain about any of the dishes? The Mad Viking is an excellent challenge and a chance to represent your home state in a feat of eating prowess. What's not to love. read more

We revisited our favorite burger place in OBX so my son could challenge himself again to the Viking Burger. The Viking burger is a 2lb. Burger challenge that he and my husband completed 7 years ago. And he did it again!! They took his picture and his name will go on the board again! The rest of us had a fresh salad and cheese fries, 1/2 burger, Carolina burger- coleslaw and chili on top of a burger.(very good), and Banimal burger 1lb. Burger(very good). All very good. This place is wonderful. The food is delicious. The prices are great. The staff is friendly and helpful. When you walk in you see it's decorated with monkeys. Lots of cool pictures on the wall. They even have a food challenge. It's not a very big place, which makes it even better. The buffalo chicken sandwich with cajun fries is amazing. It would take a master debater to convince me that this isn't one of the best fast food joints in the Outer Banks. I love everything they slide between two buns. And they really crank it out at a rapid pace. Everything is served fresh, and not by some jerk off the turnip truck. I'd punch a clown to get one of those $2 burgers! Spanky's can't be beat. Day 2 at the beach, craving a simple lunch. Hot dog/corn dogs were great and surprising inexpensive. Fries were thick and meaty and generously portioned. The standout though was a side of fried pickles that were simply bombastic. Dipped in a little ranch dressing, I would have gladly given up my fries or some portion of them to have had more of the pickles. I would recommend that they triple/quadruple the size/price of this side and serve them as an appetizer. It's about 2.5 stars for the food itself but I'm going 3 stars for the friendly happy guy at the register. I had fried catfish (a fish I haven't eaten in years but was good when I did) and fries. My lunch buddy had a chicken cheese steak. My catfish didn't taste like I remember catfish tasting but it wasn't bad. My basket was a bit skimpy on the fries. My buddy was surprised when her chicken was minced instead of chopped. She said it was okay but she's had better. Funny that the waitress was nice but when she made the rounds to check on folk, she went right past our table, clear to the other side of the room to check on folks, then into the back. We watched her return to the dining area shortly after to clean tables, get a drink refill, clean more tables, take food to people outside, and finally check on us when she came back to check on diners inside again. Went here for carry out lunch today. Great service, great food. This is a fast food joint but they have crabcake, as a dinner, sandwich or a side, I got the dinner w/out sauce it was delicious, it comes w/hush puppies but when I ordered a side of fried okra the man behind the counter asked if I just wanted to sub hush puppies w/fried okra. I said yes since I had been in NC for a week I have eaten way too many hush puppies. I don't think there was a charge for the substitution. We also had corn fritters they were good but need a lil more spice, the funnel fries were good as well as regular fries and the hot dog. Just wish they had shakes here and some diet caffeine free sodas. read more
