Service was fast and the cashier, who I think is the owner was really competent and seemed to really love his job, which I appreciate. The dude who brought out the food was excited and kind of put on a show. Finally, in the outer banks, it's easy to experience sticker shock everywhere you go. The burgers at Spanky's Grille were absolutely delicious--not greasy at all, just perfectly cooked. The tator tots and onion rings were also spot on: crispy, flavorful, and impressively not greasy (which is tough to do with deep-fried food!). My friend even said these were the best onion rings in the Outer Banks. A special shoutout to Matt, who was hands-down the best server we've had anywhere in the Outer Banks--friendly, attentive, and made the meal even better. On top of that, the prices are fantastic. We were exploring with our dog and stopped by for lunch. It was raining on and off throughout the day so I was so happy they had tables on a covered porch(3) and not just umbrellas. Although it did look like they had a couple of those in the back. The food prices are extremely reasonable for this area. The fried catfish, apparently a local favorite, was Huge. Hot diggity dog!! As we cruised into OBX, we spotted this little joint and decided to check it out. We were hankering for some "fast food" but didn't want to go to a chain. What a pleasant welcome we received from the owner who also runs the register. We ordered a corn dog (yum) and a foot long hotdog with fries! I chose a root beer because, come on, what drink goes better with hotdogs!! The beverages are self-serve, and the condiments are available near the beverage station, and ketchup's on the table! The order came out fairly quickly and we were served by a jovial surfer dude! We both ate for $11 which was pretty amazing! Although this place isn't fancy, (plastic baskets for your plates) it was "spanking" clean and cute. It was a bit retro and we felt like we were in a '50's soda shop! I love that there are paper towels at each table so you do t have to ask the servers for extra napkins! Spanky's is a non chain diner/restaurant serving up good burgers and sandwiches at great prices. We ordered a flounder sandwich for my wife, a popcorn shrimp for the daughter, and a double meat burger for me. Service was wonderful. We remain regulars at Spanky's. That means three or more months out of the year we will be eating here weekly. This is a great place for some nicely done, diner food. The menu is beyond what you might expect for such a place and we have developed our favorites. Burgers -We understand big fat gourmet burgers and that is not what these are. They are just a good flat-top burger and you can top them with whatever you want. This a much better place for such a burger than Cap'n Franks, John's or Dune Burger. We can't really do justice to the double or triple or 1 lb or the huge 2 lb Mad Viking burgers, but we love the regular single size diner burgers. For you with big appetites, go for it. The Mad Viking, when it is served with fanfare, looks awesome. Fish Sandwiches - I used to order fried flounder sandwiches when I am here. One day, Spanky asked me if I had tried the fried catfish, so I did and have been hooked ever since. I now order it "no-bun" abd just enjoy an excellent catfish filet. The catfish is worth remembering when you are there. Buffalo Chicken - We both like to get the Buffalo Chicken. It is meaty and juicy, dipped in Buffalo sauce. Very nice with some lettuce and tomato. I have since had a garden salad with grilled chicken strips on it and they did an excellent job on something so simple as grilled chicken. It was delicious, well seasoned and not dried out. I should try a sandwich. Taylor Pork Roll - Those of you familiar with this treat from Philly and surrounds will want to give it a try if and when it is on the menu. It is served with a fried egg and cheese. It is decadent and delicious. I loved it. Just remember it is an occasional part of the menu. Turkey, bacon and Swiss - I had this sandwich recently just to try something new. For something so ordinary, I found it to be very nicely done. It was hot through, the cheese was melted and it was really good. Barbecue - Spanky's has barbecue. I would recommend you take your barbecue cravings to High Cotton or Carolina Barbecue. This will do, but is not the star of the menu. For sides, the slaw is good, just maybe stir it up when you get it because the dressing settles. It is creamy with enough vinegar to make it interesting. If you need more, grab some Texas Pete. We do like the collards. They have some vinegar, some smoky flavor and are not sweetened. They are chopped enough that you are not trying to eat whole leaves and don't have to cut them up. Green beans? Well, I think they have improved them. They are now smoky ( I suspect from bacon drippings) and I swear they used to be just straight out of the can. I like them and keep ordering them. Now it would be nice to find just a few bits of meat in them. We are only here in fall and early spring. It must be a madhouse in the summer. For quick, homemade diner food, Spanky's is a good bet and a good value. I really have not had anything I won't re-order except I am not a fan of their chili on the dogs. It is on the sweet side for me and has too much garlic. I look forward to trying more things, like the Breaded Tenderloin, which appeals to my Midwestern roots. read more

Another place you have to do in OBX! 89 cent hot dogs, now they are deep fried so if you're opposed to that then don't order it. The owner runs the register and he is super friendly! Asked him what to order and he suggested the fried catfish sandwich. It was HUGE and cooked perfectly. He also recommended the Philly cheesesteak because bread was fresh from the oven, I asked if it was a "true Philly" and I don't think he knew what I meant so passed on it. Our crew had burgers, spicy chicken (which they make) not one that they get from supplier, and a turkey sandwich (thick sliced). Price is very reasonable and great for larger groups. read more

My personal favorite is the bbq sandwich, while my husband loves the hotdogs and fries and of course their burgers. The food is always so darn good. The interior is beach/coastal eclectic, with additional tables outside as well. I honestly don't like sitting outside as the restaurant is right on the bypass and is very noisy. Stopped for lunch on a busy Tuesday in May, as a constant line of 6-8 customers shuffle through quickly. Good variety on the menu; something for everyone. There's both indoor and outdoor seating so our group was able to find seating. Spanky, himself, the owner for 20 yrs, greeted everyone as he took orders with a happy attitude and cheerful smile. Our meals arrived at our table in 10 mins. Although satisfying, my hot dogs & fries were cold and could have spent more time on the grill. Everyone's food looked good: burgers chicken tenders, bbq, fried fish sandwich and the challenging tall stack Viking Burger. There are an inordinate amount of plastic & stuffed animal monkeys literally hanging around the diner as the Spanky's theme. Worth it to stop here during our vacay. read more
